So this was Shane, huh? The movie that pops up on virtually every “The 10 Greatest Westerns of all Time” list. All I can say to that is: You have got to be kidding me! No wonder some people think Westerns are kinda silly if they go after lists like that. This is so very sentimental and corny, it’s basically Nicholas Sparks with guns. Emotionally as flat as the desert, it desperately tries to make up for it via a super obtrusive score that’s clearly supposed to tug at your heart strings. I mean, the music does not stop. And it’s all so play-pretend. So Alan Ladd is “a weary gunfighter”, huh? Don’t look weary to me. In fact he…

    i. Preface. I’ve written here before about watching old movies with my dad when I was a kid. About how he’d rent a VCR for a weekend, and bring home movies on VHS to show me. Stuff like Bridge on the River Kwai, and Yankee Doodle Dandy; like Bad Day at Black Rock, and Guys and Dolls. I loved them all, but only a few of them buried their ways into my soul; Shane was one of those. I had probably seen it a dozen times before I was 18, and Alan Ladd was my favorite actor before I really knew what actors were. ii. Joe. Joe Starrett is a man not fit for the west. He’s soft and gentle and…

“a man has to be what he is” Sam Peckinpah once said Shane was the greatest Western ever made – and honestly, I kind of see why. George Stevens directs it with a patient, melodramatic rhythm that sinks deep. I love the emotional swells and subtle character shifts in A Place in the Sun – and you feel that same delicate tonal movement here. Listening to the commentary, I learned that Stevens really wanted to take his audience seriously – to trust they could handle moral ambiguity and a more layered kind of storytelling. And that’s what we get: there’s a sensitivity and sophistication in it all – through minimal changes of expression, mood, light. The cinematography is absolutely phenomenal,…

A lone gunfighter looking to escape his past finds work in a seemingly peaceful valley, but for some reason violence always seems to follow Shane wherever he goes. “Tell him I’m a reasonable man. Tell him things have gone far enough. Tell him I’m beaten. Tell him anything but, by Jupiter, get him here!” You may be thinking that you have heard that premise used countless times in westerns, so I suppose it is that influence which has caused Shane to be so acclaimed. In many ways, it felt like an anti-western with how it does not glorify violence, and instead focuses on the character drama. “You’re both out of your senses. This isn’t worth a life, anybody’s life. What…

There are four major stories I want to talk about here. First, there is the community against the corporation. This is a conflict dear to me, one that resonates in any setting. Be it a powerful lord, an evil empire, or a rancher, some potent force of greed and corruption seeks to take what is rightfully the people’s, be they represented by peasants, a weaker nation, or farmers. The narrative point is to set up an underdog, because all humans are, alone, weak. We cannot hope to stand up to the forces of the universe or society that prey on us, and underdogs and their improbable victories sing to us. The theme can vary. Sometimes, it is collective strength, sometimes…

‘Then we’ll never see you again?’ ‘Never is a long time, Marian.’ My heart was broken by this masterpiece in the most heart-warming way ever. Shane is the ultimate parable of selfless goodness counterpoised by the coarse grittiness usually associated with the genre. The unconventional way the movie resolved this seemingly irresolvable anomaly and used the regular characteristics of westerns as a ladder to reach the true allegorical heights it aimed for, paved the way for its eternal message: no matter the impossible odds, goodness always triumphs in the end. The act of righteousness might involve taking just retribution on the wrongdoers and might therefore hurt the conscience of the selfless benefactor most, but one thing it can never do.…

So basically the main guy is a sad sack and he’s a really good guy but can’t quite hack it and Shane comes along out of nowhere and literally everyone else likes him better than the main guy, including the main guy’s wife and son. Shane kicks his ass (for his own good), goes and kills the bad guys, and saves the day. Strange plot and odd disdain for the good guy in this movie.

Many westerns today function as mile posts that show a partial trajectory of American social politics and Shane is a notable example. We have a story about love of one’s country and history combined with the power of community and solidarity. It is a story that insists only a good guy with a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun but concludes with the victory of the elimination of all guns. One wonders if it’s really the Overton…

The tale of the reluctant gunslinger, told with the right amount of mystery and awareness of times past. The animal blocking in this will be my biggest memory – Stonewall’s forlorn dog was heartbreaking. The kid and his mom were both dorks, though.

A picture about American property rights. Government law is too far away to compel the Ryker brothers to follow it, so they take the role in this lone valley instead; their might makes right in the question of ownership of the land. So Starrett and the others’ argument turns to the issue of: who works the land? Against legal violence they turn to morality, to which the head Ryker counters that the Ryker brothers ‘cleaned up’ the valley of wildlife…

I’ve been meaning to watch this since 2017 and finally got around to it (thank you Paramount+.) For the most part, Shane is your typical Western: some ne’er-do-well crooks terrorize a group of hard-working, honest people just trying to live a life of peace and prosperity. However, George Stevens skews off the beaten path with a different framing of the classic hero tale. While so many westerns of the time didn’t hesitate to justify violence as a means of righteous…

Better than its time. Feels like a modern movie trapped by the past. The fact that they get all bloodied up during the bar fight in a realistic way is kind of incredible for the time. The fact that the villain, while wrong, has a legitimate understandable grievance is almost unheard of for the time. The fact that the main character is a fairly average looking guy is so refreshing. Just a great film, wish it had a better score.

Probably an artistic choice but I feelt like it got to a certain point where it got reallyy uncomfortable for me. Kind of refreshing in terms of breaking tropes, I’m guessing part of this movie was maybe about veterans returning from the war and having to reconcile their violent past with the present?

This is one of those films I admire considerably more than I actually like, which is frustrating because there’s an enormous amount here to admire. On the surface, “Shane” is built out of such elemental western material that it almost feels like an ur-western, the basic template from which countless later films were constructed. Probably the psychologically weirdest western I’ve ever seen. Not enjoyable or charismatic but perfectly made, pulls you into very disturbing and very sharp family romance without ever betraying the sheen of postwar repression and white nationalism building, and unlike many 50s movies which seem to explode and choke on the things they can’t say, this seems almost cruelly aware of what it’s doing and undoing. this movie sucks…the kid is annoying as hell, everyone is obsessed with a 5’6” homeless man, and alan ladd can’t shoot a gun in under 119 takes. Spiritually a flop.

Wild that the opening cues for this and TAMMY AND THE BACHELOR (1957) start almost the same way. Anyway, yes it is a classic! Prettyboy extraordinaire Allan Lad as a peaceful former gunslinger gives a great performance. It’s a film that understands both the value of nonviolence, and that there’s only so far you can maintain nonviolence against a violent oppressor. Violence should be a last resort, but is a last resort. Gorgeous color and also a wonderful performance from Jean Arthur. Community and resistance!!!

TCM Film Festival. Restored in 2025 from the 3-strip Technicolor 35mm original negative, which was scanned at 4K. The restoration was approved by George Stevens Jr. Egyptian Theatre. George Steven’s Jr spoke at the beginning abut reading the book as a teen and suggesting it to his dad and working on the film with him. Western is not my go to genre but I did really enjoy this despite it being my 5th and last film of the night.

Looked at a certain way, the entire story of “Shane” is simply a backdrop against which the hero can play out his own personal repression and remorse. The movie is conventionally seen as the story of farmers standing up to the brutal law of the gun in the Old West, with a lone rider helping a settler hold onto his land in the face of hired thugs. Look a little more carefully and you find that the rider and the…
