The last Kevin Smith movie I can confidently say I enjoyed. It’s interesting to think of an alternate timeline where he continued making Judd Apatow-style studio comedies with better writing. Instead, Seth Rogen introduced him to weed and we’re stuck with self-referential cack like Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. I’d forgotten how funny this movie is, and the interplay between Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks works extremely well. It doesn’t feel overwritten like some of Kevin Smith’s scripts. As much as I like Chasing Amy, Dogma or Mallrats, there’s definitely some ungainly paragraphs of dialogue. Well worth a revisit.

This was very funny. Elizabeth Banks is the stand out here. Her slight neurosis is realistic and she was always enjoyable. Personal hero Seth Rogen is funny as ever but he has stillness to him that is a little off putting and he does a bunch of jokes that he wouldn’t do anymore so its strange to see him aggressively vulgar to women. Not the puppy dog he usually plays. There is a earnestness that makes this enjoyable. Very Canadian scenes with the freezimg temperatures and chunky knit scarves.

Craig Robinson and Justin Long are the best parts of this, they should have been the main characters. Shit gag actually made me lol – funny how it paid off even tho I haven’t seen since middle school. Tisha Campbell cameo had me scream!! Aside from that, most of the rest is sloppy 2007 icky humor tied with a weird rom-com narrative push that doesn’t really make sense but I think everyone tries acting their best to pull it off.
