This movie is pretty good but it’s a little too long & it’s not as good as Tombstone. Great cast tho. Kevin Costner is a good Wyatt Earp but it’s not better than Kurt Russell’s Wyatt Earp. Gene Hackman & the late great Catherine O’Hara are all pretty solid in that movie Movies I watched everyday in a year since March 22nd

I’m usually such a sucker for westerns and I’d thought I’d enjoy this a lot more than I did. Wayyyyy to squeaky clean, zero grit it just comes across as cheesy. …and it’s 3 hours long. I did have some fun, but barely lol

Littered with great supporting performances from a stacked cast and shot through with Kasdan’s unfussy prestige grandeur, this sort of transparently aches to be great just like its subject seems to, but never gains much dramatic momentum at all. Instead it settles for being a vignette-ish but ultimately weirdly turgid would-be epic that feels like it wants to maintain some ambivalent distance from a man who basically insisted that his obstinacy and propensity for violence was in fact a reflection of his decisiveness and masculine honor. The saucer-eyed awe with which it portrays him (and the final scene) suggests a desire to be a more heroic LIBERTY VALANCE “print the legend” take.

abysmally boring. it’s 3 hours long without anything resembling a dramaturgy or aesthetical value. women are mainly whores or dying angels, Newton Howard’s overly pathetic score extrapolates a whole lot of nothing and it’s hard to believe Kevin Costner and his unleashed narcissism on full display was really a thing in the 90s.

24 years later, confirming what I always knew even without spending 3 hours to see it until now: yep, this is the ungainly, inferior twin to “Tombstone” that nobody needs to bother with. Westerns suit Kevin Costner, but the man is no Kurt fuckin’ Russell; meanwhile, poor Dennis Quaid has like 4 minutes of screen time in this whole 190-minute movie, not quite enough to compete with Val Kilmer’s iconic portrayal of Doc Holliday; Sam Elliott is demoted into Michael Madsen which isn’t only a letdown but a confusing letdown because Tom Sizemore is in this movie too and it’s impossible to tell apart one troubled, husky ’90s character actor nutball who stood out in Oliver Stone and Tarantino movies…

“My mama always told me never put off till tomorrow people you can kill today.” Lawrence Kasdan’s Wyatt Earp is a sorry excuse for a film. I was worried about the three hour runtime. But the toxic masculinity and treating women as baubles really got to me. Gene Hackman was hardly in it. Kevin Costner got kind of tiresome. So was the violence. Glad they quarantined for typhoid. Maybe they can do that again for COVID one day. Vegan alert: -Horseback riding -Reference to skinners -Skinning the buffaloes (one man throws up because the process is so disgusting)

obligatory respect for the great james newton howard score and for kasdan’s dependable direction. the rest of this is prestige-y junk, lumbering around from one biographical tidbit to the next like it’s an obligation instead of a story. normally a three-hour western would be my bread-and-butter, but costner can’t decide if his earp is a mythic figure or a scoundrel, a legend or merely a man. if the west was about anything, it was about choices that were made, good or bad, and this refuses to commit to anything, lest it divest itself of its quasi-respectable aspirations. if there’s one thing i can’t stand, it’s indecision.

This wasn’t bad but I expected more from a western. It needed more action and overall the acting just didn’t feel that real or natural to me. Compared to Tombstone, it feels way more focused on Wyatt Earp as a person than just being a normal western. Tombstone also has more iconic dialogue and characters, which made it a lot more memorable.

Now this confuses me… five Razzie nominations? What!?! Look, to be honest, I haven’t seen Tombstone, and I know that the comparison of the two films fucked over Wyatt Earp – but winner of the worst remake? Really? The People of 1994 thought that this was worst than The Flintstones, City Slickers 2, and Beverly Hills Cop 3… Fuck the Razzies! I did have respect for them, but this literally makes no sense. Wyatt Earp, though it doesn’t boast a high rating, had higher ratings than all of it’s other nominees, and yet it was still considered one of the worst movies made that year. What? Look – the film isn’t great, but it’s not terrible. The worst thing about…

“Mr., I’ve been in a real bad mood for a couple a years so why don’t you leave me alone?” A cinematic journey through the life of the legendary lawman Wyatt Earp from his humble upbringing on a farm to the infamous battle at the O.K. Corral and beyond. Well, if I’m going to tackle a three hour and ten minutes long juggernaut it may as well be on a Sunday when I have nothing to do and I’m ahead of my review schedule. Wyatt Earp is an epic Western from the early 1990s, a time when Westerns were having a bit of a resurgence. It sports an excellent cast with some big time headliners. Names like Kevin Costner, Gene…

I thought this was really average, and it just felt like it was missing something. It’s not bad by any means; I was just expecting more from a Costner western. It’s definitely way too long, and it’s not one I can see myself ever revisiting, unfortunately.

The best way to watch this film is at Nail Fairy near the Empire State Building, while receiving a smart gel cat eye mani pedi. You cannot change the channel for 2.5 hours. Kevin Costner has no personality of any kind in this, and every baddie in town is THROWING themselves at him.

Coming out a year after Tombstone does it no favours. Lacks focus and action. Its length would be a virtue if the background characters stood out, but they all kind of blend together. Poor Quaid follows up ValKilmer Doc.

“Wyatt Earp” was released in June 1994, exactly six months after George P. Cosmatos’s “Tombstone” opened to strong reviews and solid box office. The two films cover the same material: the rise of Wyatt Earp, the gunfight at the O.K. Corral, and the subsequent vendetta ride. “Tombstone” had Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer giving one of the great scene-stealing performances of the decade as Doc Holliday, and a running time under two hours. “Wyatt Earp” has Kevin Costner, three hours…

A film that will forever live in the shadow of the vastly superior “Tombstone.” Lawrence Kasdan and Kevin Costner reunited for this three hour Western epic, but the results are decidedly mixed. Whereas “Tombstone” limited its scope to the Earp’s time in the titular town, this version is more of an extended biopic with Costner’s wooden performance at the center. The cast is admittedly stacked here. Gene Hackman gets third-billing despite only having about 10 minutes of screen time. Dennis…

Truly astonishing when a cast this stacked – this talented – deliver cinema’s worst sin of all: a boring film! It’s a bummer, because there’s probably an interesting one in here somewhere (the story of Wyatt Earp is, of course, built for this genre and presumably is one!), but this movie is way too long and never really brings you in. It doesn’t help that Costner’s performance, the performance the film hinges on, is pretty one note.

I wasn’t sure if I’d seen this before, or if I was confusing it with one of the other three Gene Hackman Westerns from the 90s (I hadn’t seen it). I generally love Kevin Costner Westerns but the critics who originally lambasted this box-office bomb were mostly right. Like a lot of them, I watched this after 1993’s ‘Tombstone’, which came out six-months earlier, and it does not compare well. It feels long and boring but it’s not because it’s…

Sometimes I explain to writers, especially memoirists, the difference between a story and a deposition. A story is a well-chosen series of luminously told moments that offer revelation and, together, propulsion. A deposition is a recitation of facts and events, without the weight of meaning. This is a deposition, and dreadful. About its only saving grace is Dennis Quaid’s Doc Holliday, played like the Ghost of Christmas Future; maybe it’s a role, like Batman, that everyone should try and almost…

“Remember this, all of you. Nothing counts so much as blood. The rest are just strangers.” The life of one of the most recognizable lawmen of the west is chronicled in Lawrence Kasdan’s “Wyatt Earp.” Hot on the heels of the successful “Tombstone,” Kevin Costner takes center stage re-teaming with writer director Kasdan for his own take on Wyatt Earp. But whereas “Tombstone ” honed in a specifc period, “Wyatt Earp” takes the approach of attempting a full scale biopic from…

It’s really not fair to compare this to Tombstone. This is a wider look at Earp’s life but the parts that do overlap are deficient in every way (even after Costner’s rumored attempts to sabotage the rival film). Having just read a book about Wyatt and Doc, I have the added historical perspective as well. Both films feature some moments verbatim, with Wyatt Earp maybe being a little more true to the record. Both films also deviate from that. However,…

Kasdan gets nuts with a sprawling, long-tall bio of the legendary lawman that’s inferior to pretty much every major Earp feature out there. A brooding, melodramatic Western that’s light on action and heavy on bluster—and Costner’s stoney portrayal leaves something to be desired. That said, the final hour pieces together some nice moments. And if it wasn’t for Tombstone and Kilmer, Quaid’s take on Holliday would likely be the standard.

So this is really more of a character study than an action-western like Tombstone. The problem is the character is kind of an asshole. That said, Wyatt Earp, by all accounts, was something of an asshole. So in that respect, I appreciate the movie not jazzing him up. Earp was not a timid man, and he was motivated by his, and his family’s, best interests. That wasn’t all that unusual back then. But the Earps dipped their toes into a…

Look, I adore Tombstone as much as the next person, but this doesn’t detract from my enjoyment of Wyatt Earp at all. As someone who’s also read up on the real events and people involved, it’s fairly accurate, more so than Tombstone. And Tombstone is more centered the gunfight at the OK Corral, while Wyatt Earp is about…well, Wyatt Earp. Makes the comparison a bit unfair. Especially since Tombstone is quite a bit more romanticized while this is not. And…

Quite a bit more ponderous and portentous than the other version released in theaters the same year, Tombstone. But despite the rival film’s much celebrated portrayal of Doc Holliday by Val Kilmer, the real attraction in Kasdan’s version is Quaid’s Holliday. Quaid has rizz despite looking like he’s at death’s door, having lost over 30 pounds to play the tuberculous outlaw.

Way too long and only really found its legs in the second half and the full tilt into the “fall of the law man” arc. Dennis Quaid was a little scary here—kinda creeped me out. Uncanny valley vibes. Kevin Costner was . . . fine.

Kinda boring. Kevin Costner is so one note in this movie and the parts that are great tombstone just does better. I liked how gritty some of the shootouts were which made me think it would have a much more nuanced take on the violence and pain inflicted on and by the earps but by the end of the 3 hours it was just plodding and still wanted to have the triumphant justice montage of violence at the end that just felt so flat. Dennis quaid as doc holiday also great. But there’s less of him here than tombstone. Not as great

Pretty good but also the longest movie ever made. 190 minutes for no reason. Less good Tombstone. Thinks being long makes it an epic and I fear it missed the mark. Kevin Costner loves a long as fuck western and I do respect that. Maybe he loves playing dress up? Horizon 2 when???

A fairly accurate historical biopic of the Wyatt Earp tale. Somewhat slow but the constant gunfights keep it entertaining. I would describe it as “”the perfect film to take 15 naps occasionally interrupted by gunfire to’. Kevin Costner pulls off an amazing performance as the exact same character he played in all his previous and subsequent films. The horses were also a huge bonus.

It starts off alright, with it being fun to recognize a bunch of actors that I didn’t know were in the movie (like Tom Sizemore, Catherine O’Hara [RIP], and Jesus’s Jim Caviezel). “Wyatt Earp” is really long, but that is not a problem in itself. The problem is that it mistakes length for depth. Lawrence Kasdan & Kevin Costner tell Wyatt’s life from his youth in Iowa to his old age in Alaska, as if the sheer accumulation of biographical stations would somehow turn into an epic all by itself … Spoiler: It doesn’t. The comparison with “Tombstone”, which came out only a few months earlier, makes this especially painful, because that film…

Always typically avoided these long old west flicks. Just not as interested in them as the usual target audience. Pretty bland, standard title. I do enjoy Costner and this ensemble cast is pretty loaded. The production is impressive with good photography and music. Having known some of this story going in and due to length I wasn’t all that engaged and found myself fairly bored unfortunately. Moderately entertaining.

I had to do a double-take on the release dates of this and “Tombstone” to get the timeline right: Disney/Buena Vista put out the more action-oriented “Tombstone” on Christmas Day 1993, meanwhile WB put out the slower grandiose Awards-bait “Wyatt Earp” in the summer of 1994. I feel that these dates should’ve been switched, but even then this thing is suuuper slow, even by epic movie standards. Kevin Costner definitely knows how to make a western, there’s no denying that. But the pacing’s all off for me.

Finally watched this. Skipped it when it came out as I am such a massive Tombstone fan it has already felt redundant to me. But it is an entirely different film, telling the full arc of Earp’s life – actually this is very solid Western, worth watching, and aged well over the last 30 years – I can recommend it as part of the 1990s Western revival – not top shelf like Tombstone and Unforgiven – but very well crafted storytelling, if a bit on the nostalgic, bio-picky side.

It’s not that this is a bad film, because it’s really not, it’s just that its very existence feels kind of pointless when Tombstone came out less than a year earlier. Talk about bad timing. “All of you can kiss my rebel dick.” I wasn’t prepared for the epic scope of this western. It’s beautifully shot and lit with Costner’s Earp played as ruthless and cold. The gunfight at the OK Corral is almost casual in its matter-of-factness, completely defying audience expectations. ACAB including Wyatt Earp.

Seen years apart, two different reactions. When I first saw this I was twenty two years old and my father was still alive. I lived at home with my parents and my large extended family were still intact. I watched this with young optimistic eyes and thought it was a masterpiece. No I see it as a fifty plus year old and I see the warts on the movie as on myself. Way too long, too much prologue. Cliched “messed up hair” as means of showing older actors as younger characters. Dennis Quaid as Doc is Oscar Worthy. The music is great. Other than that, meh.

Look I liked this movie a lot. IT IS VERY VERY LONG but it builds a story and a plot that takes time to develop. Definitely a slow paced western that takes alot of time to get going but it’s a classic. It’s definitely a slower, more detailed take on the Western legend that focuses heavily on character and realism. Kevin Costner gives a steady, serious performance, though the film’s long runtime can drag at times. It’s not as action-packed as other versions of the story, but it offers a more thoughtful, grounded look at the man behind the myth.

This movie is just three hours of men staring solemnly out of windows and into the corners of rooms. By the time the movie actually makes it to the gunfight at the O.K. Corral, I feel like I understand Wyatt Earp less than I did when the movie started. Am I supposed to like him? To understand where he’s coming from? If it’s the first, then cut the last 2/3rds of the movie. If it’s the second, throw the script out and start from scratch.

Blu-ray purchase. The only thing I got lost in was how the opposition developed. I enjoy 3 hour movies like this because I have a lot to chew on, like Braveheart and JFK. As a Western it leans into the romanticized kind of story, which I can still enjoy because they don’t make them like this enough these days. Even though it has some glorified “lawman” elements, the challenges the Earps face are interesting. The cast is great. Once again I come across a story about the main character looking for a home. Maybe I’m giving this one star higher than it deserves.

Hollywood has given the Earp, et al. a lot of credit for “taming” the ol’ west. Wyatt post-lawman went to Hollywood and campaigned heavily for his story to be told. This movie is the closest to showing him in a more negative light(Costner is poorly emoting doesn’t help) even with that, Kasden loves to show Wyatt as this hero that just has had it rough. He also seems to be tied to “Wyatt’s truth” here to the point where he…

I would like it more if tombstone wasn’t so much better. Everything Cosner does feels the same.

Je check mes petits papiers, Dances done, Waterworld done, Robin, Postman, Horizon, all done. Bon bah go pour Wyatt.

i like how it shows wyatt earp’s life like from the start… but this has absolutely nothing on tombstone no one can play wyatt earp like kurt russell, and i mean NO ONE can play doc holliday like val kilmer thats for flipping sure but i did like it, the casting for it was STACKED edit… i recently read a review on this film that michael madsen said n i highkey agree its too long n its bs cuz all it does is focus on kevin costner too much n it makes me so mad. it was also a little boring (i mean VERY)

Val Kilmer’s Doc is cherished to such a degree that an incredible performance by Dennis Quaid has been completely overlooked from a historical perspective.

The Epic Wyatt Earp (1994) King Costner rocking up in the Nineties. Read later he was supposed to be in similar project ‘Tombstone’, but fell out with the director about the ideas and decided on starting his own project. Which resulted in a biopic of ‘Wyatt Earp’ with Costner as title hero in again some western project of the troublemaking actor/director and falling victim to his becoming a Costner show. Love, honor and law and order in the Wild West. At times you have the conviction that it’s more actors playing dress up.

Beautiful Owen Roizman cinematography and an animated Dennis Quaid performance. Other than that? A schmaltzy score, a dramatically inert screenplay, and a sleepy Kevin Costner. Kasdan knows his way around the page, so the question becomes how in the world did this arrive so dead on its feet? It’s clear they had high hopes for it as either a blockbuster, or more likely a prestige picture; that’s the only reason I can explain the money on screen—the murderer’s row casting, the sheer number of extras populating the frame, the costumes, the sets that must’ve been constructed. What the hell happened?

Way too long but the characterisation and context makes so much more sense for the Tombstone movie. Watching the two together made the perfect movie somewhere in between. However of course the dialogue and acting is a step down from Tombstone which makes this inferior. Like I said the long run time is also unnecessary with some obvious cuts it could be made more streamlined with still the same context and background.

An underrated film that’s way too overhated. Sure, the 3 hours can seem excessive, but I think if you like the slow-burn genre, then this is a great watch. Plus Dennis Quaid as Doc Holiday is off the charts entertaining in this. Rip Gene Hackman, Catherine O’Hara, and Michael Madsen.

A 90’s classic. Great cast and performances throughout. Costner fits the role. Beautifully shot and the storytelling keeps it interesting despite the long runtime.

Wyatt Earp does a lot of things quite well (the turbo dogshit score notwithstanding) but will forever be overshadowed by Tombstone, which simply does everything better. They didn’t get Gene Hackman or Catherine O’Hara though, so that’s +1 point for Earp.

“son, wyatt earp’s gotta think about his whole life before he walks from the oriental saloon to the ok corral on the afternoon of october 26 1881 in tombstone arizona…” somehow immediately reveals itself to be a handsome dud, like within minutes, but for the first hour or so, watching this was kind of like reading a YA biographical novel in the middle school library, and that was just a nice feeling to revisit. then wyatt earp is afflicted by…

A good western story and I always love Kevin Costner. Today I learned that tombstone and Wyatt Earp the movie were released less than a year apart. I’ve seen tombstone before but that makes me want to watch it again and compare the storytelling.

Wyatt Earp: Johnny, you’re not careful, you’ll see me once too often. Wow. The original Armageddon/Deep Impact effect. My first watch after avoiding it for years. This movie is exactly the type I love. A historical western based off of a real life, well known legend and real events. Even covers most of his life. Unfortunately it lives in the very dark shadow of the far superior Tombstone. You can’t watch it without comparing if you’re at all familiar. It…

So long. Why so long? Post Dances with Wolves, this is Kevin Costner at the height of his megalomaniac run before his late 90’s downslide. The casting is baffling bananas, stacked to the rafters but ultimately horribly miscast. People like Tom Sizemore, Catherine O’Hara, and Bill Pullman stick out like a sore thumb that could/should never exist in a 19th century western world. Dennis Quaid as Doc Holliday feels so intrinsically not right, it’s hard to imagine how anyone thought…

Great film if you enjoy slow burns. The cast of actors/actresses were fantastic. I still need to watch Tombstone to compare them. I didn’t know much about Wyatt Earp or Doc Holiday and while i’m sure a majority of it is not 100% factual it was a good starting point film wise.

I believe it was the great poet Spider-Man who said, “Little known fact, the greatest hero of the Wild West couldn’t count. … So I was thinking you make a movie about him and in it, you make him full fledged retard.” I decided to watch this today for the same reason I decided to rewatch Inglourious Basterds a couple months ago: it’s leaving Netflix tomorrow. However unlike that, this ended up feeling like a complete waste of time. I hated most…

The O.G always have Aura

Why did this get made? Don’t get me wrong, I love seeing Kevvy Cost playing himself in many a period piece, and this film is a veritable who’s-who of 90s stars. The movie was rambling and too long. It had very little connective tissue between scenes. K Costs, as much as I love him, has never sold me on being the charismatic romantic leading man.

A solid, sprawling epic. I like that they attempted to cover Earp’s entire life, and not just the more famous moments during his constabulary career. Unfortunately, the final product is an overly long film that failed to make me feel immersed in the period. I did like some of the performances, but was left wanting with others. Quaid did a great job with Holliday that I liked, but will forever be in the shadow of Kilmer’s performance in Tombstone (which…

The last time I watched Tombstone was about 10 years ago, so my review is not affected by my memories of Tombstone. Wyatt Earp has a lot going for it, the direction and soundtrack are notable standouts in the movie. The main issue is the pacing. While never extremely boring, some sections of the movie are unnecessarily long. The third act is by far the best part of the movie and the most entertaining one… except for its conclusion. And I would have definitely loved it if there wasn’t somehow a fourth act

Tombstone but with more drama and less blood.

POS. Can’t believe I made it through over 3 hours. Dennis Quaid saved this movie for me. Only reason I finished it. I can’t think of one positive comment. Anyone liking kev cos is out of their mind. One of the worst actors I can think of. Always disappointed to see him.

If Tombstone never existed, this would be an easy 3.5 or 4.

There are many movies made about Wyatt Earp and more than a few should be priority viewing above this one, but this doesn’t deserve to be thrown out. Beautiful cinematography, solid cast, probably established Earp’s worldview better than Tombstone… I know someone who prefers this movie to that one. That’s a tough call for me to make, but this is worth watching once for 3 hours.

Probably the most boring western I’ve ever watched. After seeing it again for the first time in nearly twenty years, I remain unenthused. This movie takes its tedious time in the worst possible way. It would probably have been better if it was released as a TV movie or series, but it still would have been a yawn-fest, and still bloated by its mostly mediocre acting, pointless scenes that add nothing to the plot, lackluster action sequences, and (mostly) clichéd…

Very much enjoyed this interpretation! Tombstone from ‘93 is more geared for Hollywood, but this offered a better and further reaching perspective. Would recommend for history buffs.

The reunion of Kasdan and Costner in this western after a decade is a seminal point in both their careers. At this point Costner was not far removed from his Oscar win, and as a result did his share of weight throwing to the point where Kasdan’s involvement was more or less ornamental. Costner directed the bulk of this bloated epic. “Tombstone” having been released around the same time, was by and large a more streamlined, and by all accounts,…

“Wyatt Earp” plays as if they took “Tombstone” and pumped it full of hot air. It involves many of the same characters and much of the same story, but little of the tension and drama. It’s a rambling, unfocused biography of Wyatt Earp (Kevin Costner), starting when he’s a kid and following his development from an awkward would-be lawyer into a slick gunslinger. This is a long journey, in a three-hour film that needs better pacing. It’s obvious that the…
