Synopsis

14-year-old Joe is the only child of Jeanette and Jerry — a housewife and a golf pro — in a small town in 1960s Montana. Nearby, an uncontrolled forest fire rages close to the Canadian border, and when Jerry loses his job (and his sense of purpose) he decides to join the cause of fighting the fire, leaving his wife and son to fend for themselves.

CIFF 2018: film #2 “what kind of man leaves his wife and child in such a lonely place?” at some point while growing up, everyone eventually realizes that their parents are not just their parents. they’re people with their own demons and problems that just happened to have a kid, or a few. and some even discover, to their horror, how messy their parents can be, or have been all along the messy decline in this happens a little suddenly, but it still rings true. carey mulligan and the way she delivers her (brilliantly written) dialogue is a highlight. her spiral is a thing to behold. and i was lucky enough to see her at the theater tonight for a…

Takeaways: -Don’t move to Montana. -Don’t bring your child on illicit trysts. -Maybe don’t have kids period (now you tell me). -Do encourage Paul Dano to direct more movies.

Families are built upon two things: blood and belief. They can get by on the strength of one or the other (to have both is something of a luxury), but when the latter starts to wither, the former can only do so much to save it. This strange alchemy — the science responsible for so many American lives — percolates inside every frame of Paul Dano’s remarkable “Wildlife,” a tender, gorgeous, and exquisitely understated drama about a family that loses its faith in itself. Adapted from Richard Ford’s 1990 novel of the same name, “Wildlife” begins in a calm and idyllic Montana town circa early 1960s. More specifically, it begins on the front lawn of a small house where a…

Protect Paul Dano at all costs. Been very excited to see this for awhile now and it definitely delivered. Very impressed with the camerawork and how the stability of the technical aspects of the film worked in sync with the stability within the story. That was cool. Lots of little details and parts of it that would be super fun to analyze some day as well. I will say that while I enjoyed the ending, I feel like I was supposed to be crying my eyes out and I was really kinda so far from doing so. Also Carey Mulligan’s character transformed a little too sudden for believability. But overall, great film, will definitely be recommending to my mom.

I’ve seen a lot of praise for Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal, and while it is certainly well-deserved, Ed Oxenbould seriously needs some more recognition. He held the emotional weight of the entire film on his shoulders, and he made it look easy while doing so. On top of all that, Oxenbould manages to keep Gyllenhaal from completely stealing the scenes they share, and that’s super impressive in its own right. Keep an eye on him, he’s going places. Wildlife is a simply a wonderful directorial debut across the board. Can’t wait to see what Dano will do next.

I guess Jeanette’s type is range. The writing is so sharp and matter of fact. Everyone but Joe just says whatever’s on their minds at all time. The things he was subjected to as a minor and the burden he had to carry for his family should last him a lifetime of anxiety, which is going to take him years to unlearn as an ill-adjusted adult. Not to put all faults on the parents because their ways of life were…

On second watch, it really becomes a form of a horror story through the eyes of Joe. Everything he sees and hears destroying bits and pieces of himself, leaving him unsure of how his world will end up. Forced to find answers and/or solutions to questions his parents are asking. Forced to become an the only adult at the age of 14.

Paul Dano who hurt you man for you to making movies with these endings. Sometimes love isn’t patient, sometimes it’s not kind, sometimes it doesn’t face the test of time. We often forget that not everyone’s love dissolves with a spark or bang, sometimes it fades into nothing after too many issues chisel away at the walls. I think it made me reflect on my view of the idea of marriage, and own parents, it often doesn’t cross our minds…

Did Paul Dano cast Ed Oxenbould just a little bit in part because they both kinda looked like 35-year-olds when they were teenagers? Either way, great call, the kid impressively holds his own in a heavyweight acting showcase. I prefer Unhinged Jake G to Reserved Jake G, but he’s great at both. Rewatched because it is so good. Paul Dano directs, and he and his partner, Zoe Kazan, wrote the screenplay. I’m not usually a big Carey Mulligan fan, but she is excellent in this. And Ed Oxenbould, who plays the teenage son, carries the mood throughout. He’s amazing. Such a great watch.

However, we just stay in our sadness and melancholy and that’s the point I would say, but I don’t want to be here. When the real enemy is the expectation that women shouldn’t work/be educated in the 1960s… A somber tale of grown ups being upset with the way their lives have panned out even though they haven’t even reached the age of 40. The only real explosions are done via forest fire, but that doesn’t mean that this film didn’t capture intense emotional conflicts. In fact, it’s more so the resignation that each of the characters exhibit that make this film crushing.…

Wildlife by Paul Dano is heartbreaking. The way this film quietly breaks you is devastating. No forced melodrama, just a family slowly falling apart in front of this kid. Ed Oxenbould carries this film with his silence. It’s a weird way to put it but his eyes speaks for him, incomprehension leading to disgust, sadness and confusion. I think every kid like myself who grew up in a divorced household can relate to the position of Joe in this film, powerless…

The mother’s breakdown is present. The father’s breakdown is not. There’s grace for both, but one is in frame, intentionally, and thus judged more, intentionally, and that’s not fair, intentionally.

This movie pissed me off. The mom is such a terrible person, cheating with the rich guy didn’t even get her anything because Jake Gyllenhaal came back. I felt terrible for the kid the whole way through. It pissed me off but in a good kind of way. It was very well made. The characters were good but I expected more from the kid, he just kind of put up with everything and never said his opinion.

Paul dano’s first directed movie. An awesome watch. Jake did a good job but carry carried it.

Good grief it was slow and ponderous. The ending was good with the three of them having their photo taken. His parents had separated and both of them had tears in their eyes.
