Divorces can mess up a kid’s life and when a kid is as innocent as Maisie you feel for them even more. The plot revolves around a six-year-old girl Maisie whose parents got separated and now have her joint custody, but her parents are as pieces of shit as one can be they treat her like a trophy they want her but don’t want to take care of her and are always busy in their work, I mean people take care of their fucking dogs more than what they do for Maisie here then comes in Maisie’s parent’s new life partners who are really nice people, Margo who used to be Maisie’s babysitter is now married to her father and…

For the entire duration of the movie we take Maisie’s (Onata Aprile) fragile little hand and she leads us in her world. It’s not all rainbows and unicorns and pink dresses though; instead indifference, selfishness and arrogance surround her. We follow the 6-year-old daughter of rock singer Susanna (Julianne Moore) and art dealer Beale (Steve Coogan) as she is caught in the middle of her parents’ problems who don’t get along anymore. Moore and Coogan give good performances but given that they’re mostly in the background I was more impressed by Aprile as the innocent daughter being pushed around and neglected. Also Alexander Skarsgård and Joanna Vanderham playing Susanna and Beale’s “other half replacements”, Lincoln and Margo, are of note.…

conceptually nothing we’ve not seen before (a kid’s perspective of going through a divorce of her parents, with a little extra salt here) but the superb acting makes this standing out. Onata Aprile is carrying every spectator’s heart through the ordeal she has to go through, Moore and Coogan are playing their asshole caretakers exceptionally well. the elliptical structure doesn’t work out perfectly but isn’t supposed to, you often feel as lost as our central character. it all drives towards an inevitable end you can see coming from some miles away but that’s where the unwavering, everlasting, undestroyable American hopefulness has the upper hand. you can live with that, your heart might have already bled out by then anyway.

This little girl was loved and cherished by literally everyone else but her own parents. Infuriating. People, please, THINK about your influence on your own child and take RESPONSIBILITY for your actions and consequences on their mental health. You’re having hard time with your spouse? Well, that’s sad, but NEVER forget your child or manipulate them during your divorce. You’re grown ups, goddamn. Also I want to kiss Alexander Skarsgård badly.

This is a very trying film. It is a very important film. It tells a very important story of a very important child. Adulthood is trying. But with a child, you enter a certain pact. An unwritten pact that you need to be faithful to for the rest of your life. Marriage is difficult. But when you marry, you also enter a pact. And at the very least, even at moments of extreme difficulty, both personal and otherwise, you should…

“What, are you scared of me?” Julianne Moore and Steve Coogan play neglectful, hate-filled parents a little too well. Yes, I’m scared, and I’m not a 6-year-old kid (whose innocence is captured well by Onata Aprile). Thank God for Lincoln and Margo, played by Alexander Skarsgård and Joanna Vanderham. They step up and care for a child unfairly left to fend for herself. I’m curious to read the Henry James novel this is based on. I’m guessing the film departs…

I absolutely loved this one. Such a beautiful, heartwarming but devastating film that explores a bitter custody battle and divorce from a six-year-old daughter’s point of view. I feel like this story’s one of a kind because as it goes on, it digs deeps into her relationships with her stepparents and I don’t think I’ve ever seen this kind of story before. I loved Lincoln’s and Margo’s character developments and how they proved to be so much better than Maisie’s god-awful, neglecting parents. Anyways, loved it!! Loved the adorable character of Maisie. Definitely recommend this one.

yeah i want alexander skarsgård as my DADDY too 😕 serious review: at the end of the day, we really need to feel loved by someone. we really need someone. felt too real, i’m crying while maisie crying (finally, my precious baby) :(( her parents really doesn’t deserve her. she’s too sweet, too pure, too mature 🙁 and i’m very happy when she got to say ‘no’ to her mother even when she missed her soo much.

the silent understanding of what’s happening around you even though you’re a young child, I feel like this is a universal experience. Her mother loves her, her father loves her, but that love isn’t enough. Though they try their best, their best isn’t enough. Parents are supposed to nurture their children, something tender and unique, but parents are also humans and humans have needs therefore leaving them no choice but to become selfish for once.
-
V
Pretty bad parents but they did dress their child very chic

i feel very distant, and luckily so, to most of the concepts presented here about divorce, co-parenting, and the effects it has on a child. however, i thought this was done so delicately and with so much care that it made it easy to tap into how Maisie felt. it almost felt impossible to see how this scenario was even possible. how could, realistically, neither of her birth parents prioritize her? the hardest part was seeing them let her down…

Sort’ve uncomfortably relatable but in a beautiful way divorce, seperation, moving, new people, new situations, loss all of it is very hard and as a kid you don’t even understand how to process it so you just let it wash over, your watching everything I remember the weight of holding onto those things became overwhelming and unbearable once I hit a certain age it’s extremely important to teach people the effects things like that have on children and much more…

I hate when separated parents use their child as a pawn. Then once things are all settled they don’t even give a shit anymore. That poor little girl, both her biological parents were shit.. though I will say I was proud of her mom in the end. Margo and Lincoln were meant to be her parents and meant to find each other.

I don’t know why, but I keep coming back to *What Maisie Knew*. Every time I watch it, it leaves the same lasting impression. Onata Aprile is nothing short of remarkable. Holding her own alongside seasoned actors like Julianne Moore, Steve Coogan, and Alexander Skarsgård is an incredible achievement, but it’s the emotional honesty she brings to Maisie that makes the film so unforgettable. She captures the vulnerability, resilience, and quiet perceptiveness of a child caught in an impossible situation…
