   To me a really great example of originality and provocation meaning very little if a film doesn’t deliver on its presented ideas, it’s more interesting in structure than content but even the shifting POV doesn’t amount to much. There’s a stretch in the middle (the best part imo) between a disgruntled cop and a young troublemaker where Cregger seems to be introducing elements of coincidence, human fallibility, and even how our institutions can fail to protect our kids, but otherwise the whole Magnolia thing is mostly a gimmick to control when information is revealed. There are so many intriguing dynamics in this town that are ultimately dead-ended in service of a ~crazy~ third act that people will hoot and holler about, but despite more sophisticated filmmaking after Barbarian this feels even more fractured in its ambitions. Many more thoughts… didn’t hate it but didn’t get much out of it either.

    Genuinely a compelling way to follow a film, without feeling hacky. Each character’s story adds to the story as a whole but in ways not always predictable or linear. Child actors did not take me out. Can we emphasize how difficult that is? Credit to the actor and the filmmaking, smart choice to keep that role very central – but subdued. Funny moments without undermining the vibe. Tension throughout that lives with you. Standout villain performance. This was fresh dawg! Easy spook season classic.

    If I had a nickel for every recent horror movie that centered around magic free-will removing sticks made by a guy who previously did sketch comedy, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird it happened twice.

    I watched this on the plane. I had pretty high expectations. The trailer and the synopsis really intrigued me, but in the end, I was disappointed. Objectively, it’s kind of shit.

    Amo las películas de miedo, y tenía muchas esperanzas con esta pero la verdad que me decepcionó BASTANTE. Los personajes un tanto curiositos y no le veo mucho sentido, miedo miedo no sentí, a veces escenas como la de los padres se clavan cuchillos… asco. La iba a ir a ver al cine pero menos mal que se cancelaron los planes.
