Mostly nothing more than half-measures when it comes to trying to show both sides of the war, and far from critical of the Vietnam War as a whole, but behind this very typical Mel Gibson performance and pro-American lens there is still a solid war film here depicting the sheer loss of life and devastation that this first major battle of the Vietnam War was just the tip of the iceberg for. My Grandpa, who has since passed, was a combat helicopter pilot in the Vietnam War and said that this more than any other Vietnam War movie is the one that is the hardest for him to watch and the only one he wasn’t able to get through. Given how many helicopter scenes of soldiers being shipped in just to be mowed down, I can only imagine how difficult that was to relive. And that’s not nothing.

Quite an intense Vietnam war flick. The violence did get pretty gory at times, especially when they were using napalm and got friendly fire, dude’s skin on his leg was pulling off as someone was trying to lift him up. It never felt gratuitous though. The deaths were hard hitting. Mel Gibson was great in his role as the lieutenant general (sad to hear he passed in 2017, made it to 94 though, damn). There was a line at the beginning of the film which almost broke me: “French army? What’s that?” Got to love dunking on the French, sorry mum.

“I wonder what was going through custer’s mind when he realized that he’d led his men into a slaughter?” “sir, custer was a pussy. you ain’t.” I honestly didn’t think I was going to like this because the first half or so was a bit boring, but then it got SOOO good. I loveeee war movies/shows (as I’ve mentioned before, I tend to repeat myself) so I’m surprised I didn’t watch this years ago 😭

I’d only ever seen this film just the once, back in 2011 and considered it just a little dull and slightly repetitive. Director Randall Wallace is someone I knew very little about, so you can imagine my surprise when I found out he was responsible for the screenplay for Braveheart, which got him nominated for an Oscar and a BAFTA. I’d have thought that the dialogue in Braveheart would have been the last thing anyone would have really bothered about given the amount of bloodshed from the sliced limbs and aggressive behaviour towards those nasty English cunts, but hey he won a Writer’s Guild of America for Best Screenplay? Looking into Wallace was almost as interesting as this rewatch, this…

Why this film is one of my favourites: -Mel Gibson -The raw emotion that is portrayed -Sam Elliott, seriously his lines are amazing -The all-star cast -The pyrotechnics -The brutal story We Were Soldiers will always be one of my favourite war films, I can’t even give a detailed reason, beyond what I gave above above, I have just always loved it. I love a film that can make me feel as much emotion as this one does, even after a dozen or so watches.

“We Were Soldiers” is a 2002 Vietnam War film directed by Randall Wallace. Based on the book “We Were Soldiers Once… and Young” written in 1992 by Lt. Gen. Harold G. Moore and Joseph L. Galloway, the film looks into the events of the Battle of Ia Drang which took place from November 14th to the 18th, 1965. This conflict directly is known as the first larger scale battle within the war as any previous conflicts were smaller skirmishes between patrol units. Both Moore and Galloway are displayed in the film, with Moore being the central character and played by Mel Gibson and Galloway being played by Barry Pepper in a much smaller role. As most films centralized on the…

I’ve always really liked this one but usually pass over it for other war movies. Actually one of my favorite Mel Gibson movies. Also the scene where the soldier who had recently spoke about becoming a new father got caught in the napalm strike is one of the hardest to watch in any movie for me. Heartbreaking! One of my favorite things about Dunkirk is how Nolan cut out all the home stuff. Like ALL of it. Here, the home stuff is probably the best part. There’s a sequence where a certain variety of letters are getting delivered, and just plan on crying for 8-10 minutes. Gibson really does impressively bring humor into small moments in serious roles. It’s a real talent. Also, the shoe story >>> anything. Sam Elliott with no mustache! I feel betrayed by the world.

We Were Soldiers was so close to being a great Vietnam war film. It had intense and visceral combat sequences, strong humanistic and emotionally-driven dimensions, good acting, and a satisfying conclusion. It did also attempt to humanise the enemy, not by a lot, but more than 90% of war films. But my god did it pile on the Hollywood cheese and clichés. Slow-mos, excessive angelic music, rousing speeches – you name it, We Were Soldiers used it. All this added up, and really detracted from what was underneath.

588e Vietnam oorlog film.

Definitely enjoyed it and it actually hit me in an unexpected way. Really made me think about how pointless this war, the GWOT and even current conflicts are. We waste so much life for what? Acting was incredible from everyone, Sam Elliot definitely a favorite in this one with some hilarious and hard hitting lines delivered only the way he could. Probably a little numb to war movies but 24 years ago if I saw this in theaters it would…

Has some nuanced ideas regarding what soldiers fight for on both sides and effectively chaotic battle sequences. Unfortunately the script overall doesn’t really cut as deep into the more complex ideas presented and is more content with being mostly the battle sequences and occasional cuts back to a social context. Also Barry Pepper gives the best performance in the film but his character kinda feels like he needed more scenes to feel like a substantial part of the narrative. Mel…

A film that is never talked about enough and which after seeing it is difficult to forget, also because it talks about a very important war between America and Japan: the direction provides movements with a strong emotional impact and the photography also plays a fundamental role and the cast is truly superb, especially Gibson in one of his best roles: the whole final act and the names of the victims flowing are a blow to the heart

Strong storyline, navigated the back story to each character strongly to get you to feel for each one, the action isn’t far fetched it’s very to the point and how it happened.

Great War movie about the beginning of the American involvement in Vietnam where the US Army uses helicopters to insert soldiers into battle. Stars Mel Gibson.

Another Great, Vietnam, era movie starring Mel Gibson and Sam Elliott based on a true story of Lieutenant Colonel Howell Moore. One of my all-time favorite war movies. It’s very well done and Mel Gibson does a great job train Lieutenant Peele Moore.

I haven’t watched this film in more than a decade and I’d forgotten the cast that was in it – especially Chris Klein (Oz from American Pie)! A great film that I’m so glad highlights the turmoil that those left at home experience when their partners go to war – something that I think more films should do to avoid glorifying conflict.

Bon film.

This is hands down one of the greatest war movies of all time. Very gruesome and gory but it perfectly portrait’s the Vietnam war.

Brilliant depiction of the tragedy of war. Mel Gibson and Madeleine Stowe are brilliant. The scenes of the wives receiving telegrams are heartbreaking.

I have watched this movie 5 times now and the first time I watched was a year ago. That speaks for itself. Unlike most war movies alot of time is spent not only on the heroic action on the battlefield but on the heroism at home. It really highlights the impact put onto those who are mourning and shows the guilt that those who survive feel. The battle sequences are also very good and (BIG HOLLYOOD ACTOR) was also pretty chill ig.

Come join Mel Gibson and his band of apolitical warfighters as they invade Vietnam armed with superior American firepower and some of the most cliché movie lines in the book. This movie very much falls into the revisionist camp of Vietnam War films, depicting and celebrating American soldiers as simply going to fight where their unthinking politician overlords told them to – not that the men and women who fought and were affected by the war should be forgotten that…

Hal Moore 🤝 CPT winters. Loved the effects in this movie, very well done. Gonna add the book to my TBR list cause I’d love to hear more of Moore’s internal monologue and thought process. That damn reporter needed to put a helmet on that entire time.

We Were Soldiers is an intense and respectful war film that focuses on the soldiers fighting the battle as well as the families waiting for them at home. Powerful Battle Scenes, the combat scenes are chaotic, brutal and often frightening, successfully communicating how quickly military plans can collapse once the fighting begins. Overall , We Were Soldiers is very enjoyable, a gripping and well acted war film.

The directing and non-use of CGI was so well done. Mel Gibson may be a piece of shit but dammit he knows how to make movies.

I had to make sure I saw this movie because Mel Gibson will be at Fan Expo. I thought this was pretty good. It’s not his best, but the action scenes were really impressive. I’d say it’s a solid movie, but it definitely has flaws. One of my biggest issues with this was how the characters were developed. I didn’t really feel too much emotional attachment to most of the side characters. I liked Sam Elliot. It was strange how…

[War drama] In which full use is made of the stoic, growly badassery of character actor Sam Elliot. His best scene might be where he talks with Col Moore (our Mel) in the darkness. Elliot, heavy of brow and grimy, lets him know his feelings on ye olde military man General Custer. Whilst lit only by the occasional flash of artillery fire. Cool stuff! This is a robust Vietnam War story, maybe only let down by some clunky at home…

While I still have issues with the wife’s subplot and the lack of context for the Vietnam war… …on this rewatch I was blown by this film. We love to talk about practical filmmaking and lack of cgi these days but we ignore a lot of the movies that actually do it. This film is such a sheer spectacle in filmmaking watching a bygone era of cinematic pyrotechnics. While watching this film I kept wondering how on earth did they…

I still enjoy this every time I watch it. Less ham fisted patriotism than its given credit for, but I can see why it got that reputation given Mel Gibson & when it came out. Really benefits from being so tight in what it covers, loved seeing some of the Vietnamese side and the lines from their general about it becoming “an American war”. Still, it has a lot of hero cliches in it and is worse for it.

Honestly, even though this movie has some decent ratings here on IMDb, I didn’t care much for it after all though. I mean, the Vietnam war has always been an incredible source of inspiration for the American directors and many classics about this conflict have been made such as ‘Platoon’ and ‘Full Metal Jacket’ but, personally, I didn’t really see the need of making another war movie in Vietnam because, frankly, I had my share. I’m not saying that they…

“I wonder what Custer was thinking,” Lt. Col. Hal Moore says, “when he realized he’d moved his men into slaughter.” Sgt. Maj. Plumley, his right-hand man, replies, “Sir, Custer was a p—-.” There you have the two emotional poles of “We Were Soldiers,” the story of the first major land battle in the Vietnam War, late in 1965. Moore (Mel Gibson) is a family man, and a Harvard graduate who studies international relations. Plumley (Sam Elliott) is an Army lifer,…
