RESEÑA EN ESPAÑOL AQUI ACTION! – THE WHIMSICAL MRS VARDA My Varda marathon comes to an end with what might be one of the most fitting cap-offs in any filmmaker’s career. Agnès Varda’s final documentary plays very much like a “greatest hits” project, with the director reflecting on her body of work and the ideas that shaped it. If that sounds familiar, it’s because she’s explored similar territory before—most notably in The Beaches of Agnès—but the approach here is slightly different. This time, the focus leans more toward the artistic side of her career rather than the purely personal, though there are still glimpses of that intimacy woven throughout. Varda shares behind-the-scenes anecdotes, insights into her creative process, and small…

“Not to stop time. To accompany it.” A genuine master class in filmmaking. Varda breaks down her own work with such specificity, demystifying her artistic choices and making her craft even more impressive through the transparency. The way she speaks about art, film, photography, and everything beyond, is so loving and respectful for the medium within she works, yet it’s accessible in a way I couldn’t have imagined. This is a truly educational film, constructed within the framework of multiple lectures, but the way she made this cinematic still and allowed the audience to feel the original impact of the clips shown, all the while adding such insightful commentary, was everything to me. It was a genius decision to front-load all the credits. When it’s time for the film to end, it ends. Varda bids us farewell, and then the lights come up on you seconds later. Just incredible.

AFI Fest – Film #8 “J’ai mal partout/I hurt everywhere.” My final film at AFI Fest was epic. Agnès Varda will never die. She is simply watching over us now. The movie simply expounded on the trailer, which said that filmmaking can be summed up in three words: inspiration, creation, and sharing. And the final product felt like one huge gift made that was a product of Varda’s whole entire life that she graciously shared with us. I put no thought into giving it a 5/5 rating. It was simply a reaction. Vegan alert: -Eggs and raw meat at the market -Zgougou’s tomb (cat) -Reference to goat horns being burned off -Man swallowing frogs -Shots of caught fish Vegan points: -Agnès pets her cat. -While the thought of Zgougou the cat dying might be upsetting to some, the grave was decorated beautifully and it was a wonderful tribute. -Agnès talked to the birds.

oh to be in that cinema seeing agnès in person. to be in her presence, watching her from a distance talk about what she loved to do most. she lived by three words when making her films: inspiration, creation and sharing, and she was damn good at what she did. a beautiful final act, a beautiful woman who shared so many beautiful stories, created beautiful characters and mesmerized the world with her gift. i will always look up to her a lot!

As I sat there in the cinema it felt as though Agnès was sat beside me. Showing me her films, showing me her life. It felt as though I was in conversation with her. She understands me and I understand her. What a comfort she is to me. She lives on in all I see around me and in all I am still yet to see. I miss her. I have so much to thank her for.

Apologies if this reads like a eulogy for a living artist, but has anyone ever died more joyfully than Agnès Varda? Famous since the release of her debut feature in 1954, and even more so by 1961 — when her “Cléo from 5 to 7” arrived at the crest of the French New Wave — the Belgian photographer, filmmaker, and installation creator has only gotten more iconic as she’s grown older. That’s especially evident in “Varda by Agnès,” which she has called her final film. In part, Varda’s growing clout stems from the singular look she’s adopted (a two-tone bob and the wry smile of a good witch in a Miyazaki film). And in part, that’s because Varda has put…

Going through Criterion’s Complete Films of Agnès Varda box set! I’ll be following the ‘programs’ they have laid out in the collection. Lots to love of course with Varda’s film philosophy, but there’s only a couple of incredible moments elevating this above going to one of these talks in person. Maybe I will appreciate this more once I’ve watched everything!

Oh man, Agnes Varda has been a big blind spot for me for a while. I’ve seen Cleo, but that’s it. Whatever the opposite of the “separate the art of the artist” psyche is, it’s what I have adopted. Does this artist have a clip describing how their childhood influenced their visual style? How their love of artisinal cheeses led them to get into film? How they were inspired by their childhood friend to shoot on film instead of digital?…

I really like the parts on her installations Interviewer (about her film on his husband Jacques Demy) “The entire film is a desire to stop time and deny death..” Varda “No. Not to stop time. To accompany time. The film accompanies Jacques as he’s dying”

I have a lot of favorite filmmakers, some I admire and whose movies I hope to get close to as a filmmaker myself, others who have also changed my way of seeing life. But somehow, Agnès Varda feels bigger than all of this for me. She transcends movies, and she’s just an artist I admire deeply, someone who really looked and lived life thoroughly, with love, curiosity, deep political compromise, and always seeing even the smallest ways of people, of…

More than watching Agnès make movies, I love her art even more. It’s inspiring how when an idea strikes her, and she rushes in with her camera and makes a project so quickly. She’s got a wonderful taste for the absurd (gosh, that potato suit), and it’s a joy being behind the scene for her processes. This is her invitation to her universe, and coming out of it, my world has expanded.
