One of the best holocaust films I’ve ever seen. It’s the story of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, one of the most famous instances of resistance against Nazi occupation. Great cast, great performances, and a fantastic story.

“can a moral man, maintain his moral code, in an immoral world?” — so utterly heartbreaking. kazik is one of my favorite characters in a film, i adore his progression. only complaint is that i can’t ever rewatch this for the first time. highly recommend you either watch this or at the very least read about the freedom fighters- impossibly brave men and women. psa prepare for some pretty awful german accents + a slow, slow, slow, (emphasis on slow) burn.

An extraordinary piece of history to dramatize, but this struggles to define its large ensemble and the script and direction are generally muddled. The cast’s choose-your-own-accent approach is especially weird. Jon Voight received its only acting Emmy nomination for his small role as an SS commander, which is frankly embarrassing when you consider the heavy lifting by Hank Azaria and Stephen Moyer. 52/100

“Can a moral man, that’s me, maintain his moral code in an immoral world?” Ughghghgghgh… I thought this was going to be pretty terrible going in, but I wasn’t prepared for how terrible it really was. The accents were the thing that was the worst…if you’re not going to actors from the country of origin that your film is set in, why even bother with attempting accents, when so many of them are going to be so bad. It was ridiculous. The only person who I didn’t mind at all was Donald Sutherland and I think that’s because he just spoke in his usual voice and I found that much better. Decent TV mini-series about the Warsaw ghetto uprising. The second episode is much, much better than the wooden, by-the-numbers first part. Despite the three-hour running time, most of the characters remain paper-thin, which says something about the quality of the writing. Still, it’s worth seeing for history buffs and students of WWII. The real-life people honored herein were some truly courageous fighters; let’s hope there’s a better movie about them some day. (YouTube)

In this WWII TV movie, the savagery of the Germans was only matched by the bravery of the Jewish resistance. The Warsaw Ghetto was the largest Jewish ghetto in German occupied Europe. At it’s inception in October, 1940, 400,000 Jews were herded into it. Due to starvation, random executions and mass deportations, by April 19, 1943 only about 70, 000 remained. Very much a made for TV film. But it looks like it had a solid budget behind it based on the amount extras and sets they used for this so it never looks cheap. Incredible film. The storyline was both horrific and uplifting in parts. The film is about a group of Jewish people rising up against the Germans in WWII. The movie is a made for tv film that was two parts totally an hour. The film has an awesome cast (including David Schwimmer, Lele Sobieski, Donald Sutherland, Steven Moyer, Jon Voight and more). I very strongly recommend this film.

Enjoyed more than I thought I would. Maybe I enjoyed it more than I figured just because most of the films I have had to watch for my Human Conscience class are quite bad or downright boring. My main complaint really is the accents and certain cast members. I would have preferred if everyone just spoke normally and the cast members were actually from the region in which the film takes place, especially since it is heavily marketed as being based on a true story and accurate

This film tells the experiences of the Jewish resistance in the Warsaw ghetto with attention to the balance between the horrifying persecution from nazis and the inspiring resistance of those involved with the resistance. Occasional jokes or light tone throughout the movie diminish the gravity of the story. I wish that the film didn’t feel so Hollywood. It’s a grilling tale of human resilience in the face of absolute horror and it should not be told lightly. Despite this it is still a powerfully told story of the brilliant individuals who sought morality in the face of an immoral world.

It dips into melodrama perhaps too often to be as effective as another drama covering the same setting in period from 2001 (still, fuck you Roman Polanski), but Uprising’s length and scope allow it to be a deeply detailed account of the bravest kind of human stand in history. I’ll forgive this movie all of its slight historical errors and occasionally poor visual effects. One of the most powerful and memorable war movies I’ve ever seen. The beauty of the story far outweighs everything else.

Obnoxiously overdone camera work doesn’t make this slow, boring story interesting. Mixed bag casting, almost like leftovers from a different project with no cohesion at all. The first 30 minutes felt like 90 and it got worse after that.

They showed us this movie in class when I was in the 6th grade I mostly just remember the POV shot of David Schwimmer beating the absolute shit out of a Nazi with his bare hands. Friends was never the same.

Schwimmer and Azaria are great, especially Azaria. Stephen Moyer was a favorite throughout the film, however. I think he and his performance in this film are underrated. Sobieski holds her own, carrying her scenes well and bringing an interesting dynamic to the cast. Also good supporting roles from Sutherland, Voight, and Elwes. It’s not terrible. However, there are many things wrong with it. The direction is quite acceptable, but the entire film is simply not captivating enough, dragging the viewer through 2 and a half hours of odd on and off accents by American actors, decent action scenes and Hank Azaria getting pissed. I think it may have been received a little bit better has it not come out the same year as Band of Brothers and a year before The Pianist.

Ross en zijn te jonge college vriendin en ook de wetenschapper vriend van Phoebee worden opgevoerd in deze film. Ze zetten een faux Pools-jiddisch accent op en Ross heeft zijn haar blond geverfd. Allemaal een beetje raar en het verhinderd ook niet dat je de Friends personages nog steeds ziet. De film zelf is best zeer genietbaar. Very good TV-movie of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising. At first, it’s a little weird to see David Schwimmer and Alexandra Holden, who played a couple for a while on Friends, in scenes together here. But everyone is very good, especially Stephen Moyer. Very good sets and production values.

- On 1 September 1939, Germany invades Poland, after which a regulation was promulgated that all Polish Jews should move to the new Warsaw Ghetto. As in all the ghettos, a Judenrat was appointed and was responsible for the administration of the ghetto. The miniseries tells the moral dilemmas faced by Adam Czerniaków, head of the Judenrat in the Warsaw Ghetto, who had to carry out orders of the German authorities, including sending Jews to the Treblinka extermination camp.
