“I can assure you, if you did, that the sight of royalty would cause you to dismiss all thoughts of bloodshed and you would stand… how shall I put it? In awe. Now, a president… well I mean…why not shoot a president?” The last Western. Hackman. Eastwood. Freeman. Harris. The coolest part of this movie is when Clint leaves his two kids, ages 9 (?) and 5 (?), alone on their homestead for several weeks to tend pigs while he goes out to kill people.

“It’s a hell of a thing, killing a man. Take away all he’s got and all he’s ever gonna have.” “Yeah, well, I guess they had it coming.” “We all got it coming, kid.”

The Duke of Death, or “Is that what it was like in the old days?” An older, wearier Clint goes back to the ghostly, self-critical Leone/Seigel cowboy-as-horror-monster vibe of High Plains Drifter and made one of the hardest, saddest films ever about being a guy who deals in torturous mortal wounds and gruesome, vengeful executions/massacres with the same familiar, matter-of-fact naturalism it takes for someone else to ride a bike or pick up the bottle again. (“It’s a hell of a thing.”) Every time I revisit this, I’m blown away by how it casually undercuts almost every conventional moment or avenue a movie like this might make towards treating its genre storytelling with nostalgia and excitement and instead locates a…

A film about how the “West” as a concept was largely a series of intersecting male insecurities, from penis anxiety to the overwhelming fear of losing a fight. The hero is a man with a past of ruinous, pointless violence who bettered himself only when he separated himself from his old pack and settled down with a woman who showed him another kind of life, and his aged wisdom of the evil of his old ways constantly nags at him when he sinks into old habits. Honestly, more revolutionary a revisionist western than I think an actual liberal could produce today, or at least certainly one less interested in blaring these themes as opposed to teasing them out with subtle elegance.

“I swore I would never be involved in a picture with this much violence in it. But the more I read it and the more I came to understand the purpose of the film, the more fascinated I became.” (Gene Hackman) BLURRING THE LINES BETWEEN HEROISM AND VILLAINY, “UNFORGIVEN” SHATTERS THE MYTH OF “THE OLD WEST”

As a movie about America, rivals THE GODFATHER as maybe the best ever. Also like the Godfather, it’s just damn fun to watch. America is far too complex a place for any one story to explain it; but the one UNFORGIVEN tells is a revealing one. William Munny – our hero – is a reformed killer. A killer of women and children whose memory is peopled by the ghosts of his undeserving victims. When we meet up with him, he’s a widower and a failing pig farmer with two kids to care for. When he’s persuaded to dust off his gun, he tells himself it’s because the folks he’ll hunt down “have it coming” – an act of honorable revenge…

I’ve killed women and children. I’ve killed everything that walks or crawls at one time or another. And I’m here to kill you, Little Bill, for what you done to Ned. Atonement. A study of regret and contemplation. The final western from the man who helped redefined the genre sees him in deconstruction mode and pulverizing it for a modern audience. Trademark scenes drenched in darkness and emotions conveyed via actions. From the moment Will hits the bottle again till the end is some of the most impeccable, timeless storytelling that I’ve ever seen. Monolithic. One of my all timers.

Clint Eastwood started to direct around the time that the western went from being an action genre to be Hollywood auteurs favorite art genre hangout and to some point all his four straightforward westerns are very labored and self-conscious exercises in the same, but he was never that interested in most of the standbys that attracted others, all the genre discussion itself and “America” (outside of Josey Weles) as much as he saw the trappings as ideal to deliver his avenging ghost persona. a man of violence who exist to put the desire of action into place, who is there just to put Old Testament morality into movement (all of Eastwood’s western ghosts are righteous, but monsters all the same).…

You want a good ol’ country western. This is your jam. Clint Eastwood can play country westerns in his sleep man. The other two fellas were not bad as well.

Possibly one of Clint’s best films. Freeman and Hackman are outstanding. The grappling with profound moral issues is poignant and powerfully explored. Stunning film.

another banger from clint eastwood!

Maybe I need to indulge in old western films before critiquing this one, but it just really wasn’t anything more than an average watch for me. Endless riding scenes and just in general strange pacing that starts to drag a bit. Obviously I can see what it’s trying to do, but I don’t find it exceptional in any way.

R
it’s unrelenting in its depiction of violence as a self-serving tool of the weak. eastwood definitely has a draw towards stoicism, and it really, really works here. definitely putting this on the very small list of westerns i adore

I go back and forth between this and Assassination of Jesse James as my favorite Western. Both are all time great films, but both feel like they’re missing just a small amount to be my favorite ever. Regardless, it’s as good now as it was the first time I saw it.

A good western but nothing to really write home about, I think it was a little slow and the dialogue could’ve been better written. I liked how you could tell that Eastwood and Freeman’s characters’ hearts were not really in it anymore but they kind of just needed the money, and ended up doing things in the name of friends / family and justice. It also did a good job of showing how unglamorous the west was back then.

A slow burn western directed by the greatest to ever do the genre. Gene Hackman was also a standout here. I loved how there was no true protagonist or antagonist, with all the characters existing in a much more morally grey area.

I refuse to believe they said “hump” that much in 1880. Jokes aside, I’m pretty sure this is my first Clint Eastwood movie and he either couldn’t act by ‘92 or never really had it. Hackman and Harris acting circles around him. Obviously good stuff around the cost of taking lives but Clint, sir. I don’t know.

This a movie that approaches theme extremely well. Unforgiven is entirely focused on deconstructing violence, and the western movie itself. At every action scene, this movie denied me what I wanted to see. There is no epic shootouts here nor dramatic standoffs. Clint Eastwood spends most of the movie groveling in pain or repeating the same old tiresome line about how his wife changed him. All the killings are anti climatic, be it a slow bleed out, an ambush on…

Yeah this is a fucking masterpiece, better than the good the bad and the ugly in my opinion. This movie has it all, character arcs, development, depth, cinematography, pacing, acting, like the part when we find out Ned died? Heartbreaking, five minutes later everyone died you feel nothing but sheer satisfaction. I like that every character is morally grey, I thought it allowed me to watch without any personal bias and it just makes the film a more satisfying watch.…

A brutal deconstruction of the entire Western genre. It strips away all romanticism, violence is ugly, gunfighter legends are fabricated lies, and “justice” under Little Bill is just cruelty in disguise. Jaimz Woolvett kills it as the Schofield Kid facing the traumatic reality of taking a life, while Munny proves some pasts can never be erased.

Fascinating study of mythologized violence and how it breaks down not just those the myths are about, but also especially those who choose to believe the myths. Great movie.

I think this movie works so well because it’s a rejection of the tropes that made the western movies of earlier years so popular. It’s slow and scenic and lacks a true hero, every evil deed begets another, be it one of ego, revenge or monetary gain and ends ultimately with our protagonist returning to the life he swore to leave behind. Not as a hero, but as another person simply performing an evil deed.

Wow. Absolutely brilliant. I think enough has been said about this as a complex deconstruction of the “Western” myth, a showcase of what these men and the time period may have really been like. Not like how mainstream Hollowood did it. I do think there are likely a lot of mainstream stories, on coming to mind being the new God of War series that take heavy inspiration from this. The concept of a man trying to do right and moving…

Clint Eastwood as William Munny was riding the horse from the Tristar Pictures logo in this movie. Lmao!

I would definitely appreciate this a lot more if I have lived through the evolution of westerns, unfortunately that isn’t the case so instead I just find this difficult to sit through owing to its slow-burn nature. Gene Hackman’s phenomenal command of his character is honestly the only thing keeping this film alive.
