“Through the darkness of future past The magician longs to see One chance out between two worlds Fire walk with me.” FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DON’T READ THIS IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN “TWIN PEAKS: THE RETURN” In the original run of Twin Peaks David Lynch and Mark Frost were never going to say who killed Laura Palmer. Only after pressure from executives at ABC did they reveal the murderer. Lynch called Laura Palmer’s death “the goose that laid the golden eggs” and when you look at the history of episodes that immediately happened after, it’s clear there’s no bullshit there. The ship was righted by the Season 2 finale and we were left with a cliffhanger that promised a…

“Is it future or is it past?” “We live inside a dream.” Spending an eternity trying to fix what was broken. But was there ever a time when it wasn’t broken? Where exactly are we now? Are we even the same people anymore? Genuinely think the final episode/scene of this will haunt me forever.

Was there another image that perfectly encapsulated the experience of living through 2017 than Charlene Yi dragging herself across a bar floor, slowly breaking down until she unleashes a primal scream that eventually fades into nothingness? Twin Peaks was less film or television, but moreso something born of alchemy. A tragedy written in a holy text that reshaped our conceptions of what cinema could be while circling back to the life of the girl whose death is where it all began. If Fire Walk With Me gave the cinematic dead girl a voice then the newest incarnation of Twin Peaks made her a deity. Despite all its grandiose moments, and there were many, Twin Peaks is the story of one…

What makes Lynch so fascinating is that he’s a conservative whose aesthetic tendencies (unerring empathy for/centering of his female characters, a proclivity for exploring dysphoric relationships between persons and their bodies/bodies and the world, and an affinity for the cynical epistemology of the noir) constantly undermine his nostalgic and otherwise regressive gestures. Nowhere is that more apparent than in The Return, a colossal moral reckoning with the willful failure of each and every available institution (cultural/political/social) to reckon with trauma. Lynch’s disillusionment with post-millennial America reaches back through time to point the finger not so much at modernity itself but at specifically American iconography and mythology, an inherited cultural history which enshrines the moral purity of dead women and creates…

I really don’t know where to start with this. I finally took the time to properly invest myself in The Return (after attempting to start it at the end of last year and deciding I needed to have time to fully focus on it), and it is incredible. Lynch perfectly demonstrates everything that makes his work incredible in this vast series – comedy, empathy, beauty, darkness, liminal space, the unexplained, the explainable that goes ignored by society, the dream world,…

David Lynch’s magnum opus. It combines and revisits a great many things (themes, moods, even specific scenes) from almost all of his earlier works so that it is a fitting and monumental bookend to his incredible filmmaking career, and yet is chock-full of new ideas from an eternal innovator. This was my third time seeing The Return. People say that every minute of it is gold. But it’s really a work of so many faces, details and themes that it…

It’s good, but I can’t imagine thinking this is as good as season 1 (or episodes 1-9 of season 2). Compelling overall but far from flawless. While I don’t doubt this was intentional, the decision to strip almost all of the kindness and whimsy out of a show that was originally teeming with it makes for a much less pleasurable viewing experience. The peaks (episodes 8, 16 and 17) are very high though

As much as it pains me to say that we’ll never get another David Lynch project, in the end, Twin Peaks: The Return might be the greatest swan song we could have ever gotten from him as a director and writer.

This is my review for the entire twin peaks series Even though the series has a few quirky faults, I think the peaks of the series (pun intended) make up for it 100x over. Definitely a 5 out of 5 in my book. Although Twin Peaks appears to be a crime series on paper, it goes MUCH deeper than that. Watch with an open mind and take it all in. Though not a film, Lynch’s Twin Peaks: The Return serves as his cinematic magnum opus. If you watched the original twin peaks and was left with questions about reality, dreams, limerence and the staunch underbelly of humanity…be prepared to engage all critical thinking skills to see the beauty of it’s return. It is a twisted, provocative and disturbing work that captures the complexity of the human mind and the spaces between here, then and now. Absolute brain buster and masterpiece.
