“Time just gets away from us.” Only the Coens. The most authentic western in modern memory, only the Coens could accomplish what they do here and they warrant rewatchability to spare. For one, the Coens are masters of language. Always have been, always will be. The way they go about capturing the Old West linguistics and dialects and transplant them into unique and unusual accents of characters is an absolute treat to experience and in the process, transplants the viewer into the past. A merciless past, but not one without humanity. The production values are sky-scraping with expertise across the board. Anyone who claims to know films is aware of the legendary status of Roger Deakins, and he is currently…

There is nothing quite like revisiting a movie ten years after you first saw it. When I saw this in theaters, as a 22-year-old, I enjoyed it. Watching it now, as a 32-year-old, I get it. Yes, on one level, TRUE GRIT is just a classic western — a good, old-fashioned yarn about heroism, revenge, loss and family. It does not build on the genre or subvert it. Instead, the Coens worked to give us a perfect example of the form, albeit with modern flourishes and their darkly comedic sensibility. But you can also watch TRUE GRIT as a story about time and aging — about coming to terms with the life you’ve lived, making something of the life you…

“Well, I guess they was all married men who loved their families as they scattered and run for home.” or “Gone the whiskey…seized in evidence.” This is such a fine old-fashioned tale that I found myself deliberately declining to think of it in any critical sense. Yes it has on its mind ideas of fairness and decorum, selfishness and altruism, how we treat people we feel we don’t need to treat well, what constitutes a paradigm of moral masculinity. Whatever. It’s also just a great ripping yarn, spellbinding.

I didn’t think I would like this one as much as I did, but I did! I absolutely adore the production quality of this movie, and that score?? Beautiful. Adore it. The performances were stellar across the board, but young Hailee Steinfeld especially was incredible. Matt Damon and Jeff Bridges were fantastic too. Just a very lovely, well-made film.

I want to talk about how True Grit is restrained for the Coens, beautiful because of Deakins, measured because of Bridges, and stylish. But really I want to talk about how a movie starring Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon, shot by Roger Deakins, and written for the screen and directed by the Coen brothers is absolutely OWNED in every way by fourteen-year-old Hailee Steinfeld. Nobody else comes close

Coen Brothers ranked Truly one of the most underappreciated films of the 2010’s. And easily the Coen’s most underrated. This was nominated for 10 Oscars. It didn’t win any, but I feel like this film came and went. Here in the UK anyway. I think the Western genre doesn’t hit with audiences the same way it does in the US. Certainly feels a bit more “studio friendly” than some of their other works. Which I think works in it’s favour.…

Pretty obvious why they made it after NCFOM. Alright movie but the Coen’s style, a joy technically, doesn’t really lend itself to the necessary emotional beats of a sincere Christian story. Also rather tropey which is fine if you like the genre ig. The little girl was the best part about it and dunno why but I only now realised that One Battle After Another’s second half is a neo western of sorts

One of the best westerns I have seen, albeit I don’t think my favourite Coen Brothers’ film. Steinfeld’s performance is spectacular. I could barely understand a word of Bridges and Damon is excellent comic relief.

Sometimes all you need is a good ole classic western. Taking a star just because the lighting and sound mixing was pretty off-putting, but didn’t necessarily take away from my watching experience. First, this cast was absolutely stellar. The chemistry between the WIDE ranges of Matt Damon, Jeff Bridges, and Hailee Steinfeld felt so, so real. Between the emotional toil, persistence in achieving their goal, and comedic relief, it was a really great connection. And the dialogue? Brother, I genuinely…

“Time just gets away from us.” True Grit is just a great, old-school western, and another reminder that the Coen brothers rarely disappoint. Hailee Steinfeld absolutely blew me away here!!! She was so young when she made this, and yet she carries so much of the movie on her shoulders. I spent the beginning trying to figure out where I knew her from, only to realize I’d just seen her all grown up in Sinners. She’s fantastic! “You must pay…

Hailee Steinfeld. That’s my review. Hailee freakin’ Steinfeld. She’s 13 years old at the time of shooting and it’s her first film, and yet she’s running rings around acting veterans like Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Josh Brolin. She leads the film like someone who has been acting in huge films for decades. Of course the film has many strong qualities – the Coen Brothers’ razor sharp script and expert directing, Roger Deakins’s beautiful cinematography, Carter Burwell’s exceptional score etc.…

Favorite part of this was the dialogue. Storytelling was good up until the last 20 minutes of the movie. Ending felt very rushed. Green screen use during the final riding sequence really threw me off. Everything else felt well put together, in terms of aesthetics, up until that point. Ending sequence felt grim for the sake of it, as opposed to the string of fortune that preceded it. The climax of the film was very quick. Completion of the Mattie’s…

It is a good retelling of the novel True Grit. The supporting actors and actresses are better than the original one, and Jeff Bridges is a good Roster Cockburn but is not as good as John Wayne. Overall this a better movie than the original from 1969.

Sharp dialogue, lovable and dynamic characters, great action, and wonderful scenery. There’s really not much more to ask for. The only thing that felt a tad rushed was the revenge at the end. However, I’ve never read the book, so maybe it’s the same there as well.

Rewatched this after years. Read the book. Rewatched again. Tremendous all around. Hailey Steinfeld acts her behind off. An actual mind blowing performance for someone of her age at the time. Bridges not far behind and Damon acts without any semblance of ego. Everybody is great in this. I really liked Barry Pepper. He elevated the movie with his presence. I remember being younger and disappointed that Brolin was playing a doofus but years later, it lands incredibly well.
