This is Denzel at his best, he’s simultaneously charming and frightening. I watched this movie not knowing he would be the villain and not knowing if I was supposed to approve of the things he was doing, which I think made it better because I felt the same betrayal Ethan Hawke’s character did. His character is slightly more understated, yet he’s always one of my favorite actors. He focuses on realism over dramatics and knows when to lean back and let another actor have their moment. This definitely the number one first day on the job movie.

its one of those that you want to rate 3.75 man, gets boring a bit at the middle part but the last 30-40 minutes high were really high. both denzel and ethan acting were really good, its just hard to agree with the concept that its hard to be a good cop when in reality theres just no good cop at all, at least in my country.

I watched through the first part of the movie wondering whether he was playing an anti-hero role or the antagonistic role. Aucune femme n’a ne serait-ce que 2 min d’action concrète et pertinente, les deux personnages féminins présentés plus de quelques secondes vont soit se faire agresser sexuellement par des hommes, soit s’apprêtent à avoir une relation sexuelle avec un homme (option femme qu’on voit intégralement nue sinon on n’aurait bien sûr jamais compris) et ne sont que la « cousine de », la « copine de » ou la « mère de ». Le meilleur acteur du monde. Peut-être la meilleure performance de Denzel que j’ai vue pour le moment. Il représente exactement le flic que j’aurais rêvé d’être : la loi c’est lui, badasse, ripu, et qu’est-ce qu’il est bon dans son métier (à sa manière). On pense que c’est juste un malade qui y va à l’instinct, mais il sait exactement ce qu’il fait à chaque étape.

A great LA film, with two great lead performances. I’d heard about Denzel’s performance for years and yeah, it’s unreal. You just don’t question any of it. There is a slight air of ridiculousness about the film which I didn’t fully buy, but I definitely did buy how this builds drama in the second half. Had me on the edge of my seat! “What a day. What a motherfuckin’ day.”
