Taken on its own merits, “Totall Recall” is a servicable science fiction action thriller. It is a loud and mostly exciting mindbender; and although, design-wise, it borrows too much from better science fiction films, it is not too bad to look at. In comparison to the original “Total Recall,” however, this version strips away too much of what made Verhoeven’s 1990 film special. Gone is Mars and its peripheral, mutated charms. Gone is much of the rough and tumble violence. Gone is the plausability of multiple interpretations of the protagonist’s story. All that is left, then, is the watchable, but mostly personality-free, sci-fi actioner described above.

Wiseman keeps the basic conspiracy actioner plot beats of the Verhoeven version but drops the gleeful, sleazy cartoon fantasy aspect of it in favor of the most generic, overlong, knockoff Minority Report dystopia ever envisioned, which completely robs those beats of any of their previous interest or power. Just a really bad combination of zero imagination and deadly serious about itself, which is obviously a fundamental misreading of the original film (in part about the very idea of turning the fabricated American action genre in all its macho, silly glory into this paid for simulated dreamworld where a construction worker gets to viciously destroy our privatized environmental hellscape and kiss the girl at the end) but even more annoying is…

I saw this in the cinema when it was released, late 2012. It was a blind date with a guy called Aaron: we had some dinner before and a chat and then went and watched the film. When we were walking out after it had finished, he told me he thought it was better than the original. I never saw him again.

There’s a moment near the end of the first act where ferrell’s fake wife says “deep down did you think someone like YOU could marry someone like ME” and that’s fine in the script or whatever. But when you’re on set and saying that to Colin Ferrell I feel like the director needs to step in and be like “hey this character is obviously more handsome than the writers imagined, let’s pick up some alts.” it doesn’t feel like there was much attention paid to the reality of the scenes and it robbed the actors ability to land a believable performance. Especially true for three breasted lady, but I refuse to say more about that

I love how HAM Kate Beckinsale’s characters was going in this remake. It’s as if Selene from Underworld had traveled the multiverse to kick Colin Farrell’s perfect ass. She did not have to go that hard but I was totally here for it. A fun remake full of action and stunning special effects. I also really appreciated the director’s love for lens flares. People don’t love this remake but people are wrong.

I went into this chanting the following mantra: “I shall not compare it to Verhoeven’s classic film.” Let’s see how I got on. Wiseman’s film is loosely based on Philip K. Dick’s short story “We can remember it for you wholesale”. And by loosely I mean it’s actually not based on it at all. The only similarities to the story and this film are in the characters’ names and the name of the company that alters memories. That’s it. No Mars. No hidden fantasies. None of that. See, Verhoeven’s film took liberties as well, but at least captured the essence of the story really SLAP Ouch. Sorry. Ok, visually this film looks absolutely stunning. Weird how much it constantly references the much cooler original while being incapable to rise over some warmed-up Jason Bourne shit. I knew not to expect much but still. World design is pretty slick though and Bryan Cranston seems to be having fun at least. There are several scenes where I couldn’t tell whether I’m looking at Kate Beckinsale or Jessica Biel. Doesn’t feel like they cast them on purpose like that.

Did we really need a remake of the 90s Total Recall? Nope! And could this have been a generic sci-fi action movie and just changed certain aspects without referring to “total recall”? Yep. But because of the remake route, it probably gets a lot of unnecessary hate. But that doesn’t mean it’s still a great movie. I thought the first half was pretty decent but as it went on, I started to lose interest.

Can’t believe it took me ~14 years to finally watch this. Can’t say it was bad, either. The original was perfect, of course, and I wouldn’t want it any other way. But some of the changes work remarkably well here. In total, I see it more or less like with the RoboCop remake: far from perfect, but I like it for what it is trying to do and/or what new ways it is trying to explore/lore to extend.

Unpopular opinion: I liked this quite a bit. Yeah, the original is way better. Not denying that at all…but I still find this to be a pretty fun and enjoyable sci-fi romp. Very fun popcorn action. The Blu Ray has an extended director’s cut that I think works way better than the theatrical cut. Not sure if the extended cut is available anywhere streaming but it adds roughly 12 more minutes with a few big differences and a slightly different ending. Highly recommend giving it a chance.

I really do love the cyberpunk world with cars’ traffics and the geopolitic’s situation, tho the elevator’s earth seems very silly but why not. The storyline, characters’ arc and action scenes are typically at the same level as bad movies which is unfortunate because you could do better with this world building (why Oceania has to be called The Colony? that’s n’importe quoi)

The especially liked the way in which the movie was introduced with the colonies being on opposite sides of Earth and showing the differences in economies to also influence the outcome of the story.

Num futuro distante, apenas dois territórios na Terra estão habitáveis depois de guerras com efeitos químicos devastadores. Um dos de territórios manda no outro e a luta de classes latente desencadeia a história a partir de um operário que descobre que sua identidade foi alterada. Refilmagem do clássico de 1990 que é bastante movimentada e prende a atenção, mas que na comparação com o original perde feio. A cena da alfândega, particularmente, me decepcionou muito! Buena trama, gobiernos haciendo auto atentados para justificar los ataques a otros países? Donde vi eso antes? Debe ser mi imaginación, eso solo pasa en las películas. Cool action, and, choreography, paired with decent world building. Going in to it I didn’t know it was a remake, so I hope that the original film does a better job with the psychological aspects that I was anticipating throughout the movie. Really the only part I didn’t like was the story, which felt very shallow for somthing that could have been very deep. Visual effects are still really good even today at least. Acting was kinda dry though, even from Brian Cranston.

My favorite aspects of the movie were the visuals. The design of the cityscapes, and buildings were amazing made for a very pleasant viewing experience. The dystopian, dark tinged, cramped living areas and markets created a very appropriate setting for the plot. The story has a very intriguing premise, but it wasn’t executed as well as it could have been. There were some obvious plotholes, and some strange dialogue choices. The ending isn’t nearly as satisfying as you would think, but it does have a nice twist at the end.

Eliminaram tudo que havia de mais imaginativo no filme do Verhoeven e substituíram pelo o que há de mais genérico em termos de criação de mundo em um filme de ficção científica dos anos 2010. É uma pena que muitos conheceram essa história por este filme e provavelmente nunca devem assistir o do Verhoeven.

I like this reinvention of Total Recall…I think it had some good ideas. I like Kate Beckinsale’s character…I think it made sense that Quaid was HER mission, and she was going to see it through, regardless. I think it played with the whole “paranoia” angle better than the earlier version did. I think the future in this movie made more sense, it really seemed like the future, and why anyone isn’t working on those “handphones” I’ll never know. I think it made some sensible changes from the original, enough that it stands up as it’s own movie, without seeming just like a newer remake.

Very confusing, past the point of a reasonable plot to follow, even for the premise as a whole being what it was. It was hard to reconcile the editing and dialogue with the direction, and it seemed like a lot of the moments meant to have oomph get trumped by the chaos of the next. I finally gave it a chance, and I wish I hadn’t. Every ounce of personality from the original gets replaced with sterile action and gray visuals. Slick effects can’t hide how lifeless and unnecessary this remake feels.

What a phenomenal Sci-Fi/Action film, I thoroughly enjoyed the concept that this film covered with mind bending thriller elements that were very spectacular in this dystopian futuristic world that it is set in. Overall, the ending was great and it was a refreshing take on how reality may not be what you thought it may be, and it was quite psychological in relation to some other Sci-Fi films that I’ve seen, and this was surely up their with the rest of them

Glowing and distorted neon lights, noisy and filthy night markets, a worn-out high-collared coat, and a lonely figure rushing through the crowds… Sensitive, melancholic, and lost, Colin Farrell perfectly embodies the image of the lone detective often found in cyberpunk literature. Unfortunately, the film completely turns into a popcorn blockbuster in its second half. To experience the visual spectacle of cyberpunk, you need a big-budget production – but big productions often come at the cost of falling into familiar formulas and clichés. I only hope that Neuromancer will finally make its way to the big screen soon…

Idc how bad this movie is on paper. I think the concept is super cool, and the piano scene is so iconic. In terms of world-building it feels very feasible, whoever wrote this is a genius that was pushed to the side by production (most likely).
