This was one of the first musicals that i have deeply appreciated since i am old enough to watch it and deeply appreciated beautiful work of lin manuel miranda and every since I have followed and watched his work, the uniqueness of his music is so distinctively him when the singers would sing on top of one another, and thats how you know it was written by him, like an artist who writes their names at the bottom of their…

Goddamn. I watched this blindly without knowing anything. I didn’t know it was a autobiography of Jonathan Larson. And man, he was someone who could push away the people he loves (accidentally) just to achieve what he’s been longing for so long; which is not hard to believe if ambition eats you alive. Lin-Manual Miranda being the one who directed this was really cool, just like Hamilton, writing songs and stories about the forgotten people who deserved to be heard.…

Omg This was recommended by Ridge with a bunch of other musicals and I think I’m trusting Ridges every recommendation after this , truly beautiful , brilliant idk what else to say I’m speechless ! , If you know me you’d know that i rarely watch musicals and when i do I don’t enjoy them that much ( don’t get me wrong I love music but musicals not very much) but this changed my perspective The only note I have is that it could’ve been a little bit shorter, Tony’s performance is just perfection I’m definitely rewatching this soon

Andrew Garfield is great here and Lin Manuel Miranda does a good job with the direction. But that doesn’t stop the main character from being obnoxious. The movie wants us to believe he was this visionary writer but doesn’t really give us any reason for this other than he can write songs easily. There is some emotional weight to the scenes that hit hard but some of the music numbers are indulgent and go on for too long.

But more than that I come back to this film time and time again for the great musical numbers, and to remind myself not to get caught up in how fast paced life can be. Jonathan Larson respresents one of…

Tragic that Rent isn’t even that good. 5 years later, I still maintain Garfield should have won Best Actor for this. He soars in this, hitting every mark perfectly. Not to mention, he’s a great singer. A really solid first feature from LLM. He gets musicals very well, and you really feel that in the seams of this. This is a movie based on the short life of Jonathan Larson who is worried that he doesn’t have much to show for being on the verge of turning 30, as compared to his parents and others. He seems to always be so busy with living life but has worked many years on composing a theater show which he can’t seem to finish. Is it procrastination? He’s down to the wire now. It’s do or die. Maybe it’s taken so…

As someone who plays multiple instruments and is very involved with my art department, the scene where Jonathan is at work and his mind keeps jumping from topic to topic, unable to stay based in real life or his ambitions is such a masterfully acted and written scene.
