10 episodes of everyone in England acting completely out of their minds but Richard III somehow walked away with my whole heart…. Lord Stanley is the ultimate sideswitching king.. Say what you want about Margaret Beaufort but she suffered so much remained unshakeable and fought until the very end to see her son crowned even if she desperately needed a chill pill. 10/10 chaos loved every second.

Loads of good stuff here (the cast pretty great overall) and it nicely presses the histotical buttons: Such a fascinating period. Of course it plays around with rumours and ideas to add even more to the story. It’s ‘low’ budget, so battles don’t seem magnificent, more like a few blokes in a wood, and a consequence of the story is that it’s hard to keep track of the years flying by so kids become adults in such a short space with our leads staying young and beautiful. (RF ❤️) But a really enjoyable journey that has got the history buff in me going a bit.

I love love love love LOVE this show. The chemistry of the cast absolutely sold this historical piece, so much so that I am inclined to watch the next two installments featuring the descendants of the titular White Queen. I found it difficult to form opinions on many people (the sons of York and their cousins, Anne and Isabel, especially), but no matter what, I rode hard for Elizabeth Woodville, Elizabeth Jr., and the Rivers family.

But if I had a penny every time I get obsessed with a period drama series where a Queen named Mary marries a King who cheats on her and eventually dies of a fever, I would have 3 pennies, which isn’t much but it’s weird it’s happed thrice. First of all, I need to say that I am honestly surprised at myself for even managing to finish this. The thing is that as a person who loves history, the Wars of the Roses is such a rich and complex period but there’s barely any political depth or intrigue in the show. Instead they added a lot of unnecessary witchcraft and drama. Also, I disliked most of the characters to the point where the portrayal I liked the best was Margaret of Anjou. Even if you leave all the historical part aside, in my opinion it wasn’t even entertaining at all.

The subject was relatively fresh (there are hardly any films about the Wars of the Roses and the rise of the Tudors), and historically, it mostly stayed true to the source. There were fewer battles than in, say, “Game of Thrones” or “Dune”, but the series clearly had the same vibes.
