The camera, the editing, the score, the performers, the characters, all of them reaching out and having faith that they’ll be pulled in the right direction. All guided by imperceptible senses, and appropriately erratic for them. The sad part is that they can never get to the end. Ivy knows the whole truth, but she’ll never know that she does. The only closure is in falsehood. Knowledge is ignorance, and ignorance is bliss. But in the end, Shyamalan is no cynic. He ends on a note of hope, even though we know it’s hope born from a lie. Hope is hope, the film argues. Shyamalan’s said that his entire career. I’d love to read an argument against this film that isn’t based in banal “plot hole” nitpickery. This is extraordinary filmmaking.

Tired: the dialogue is bad, the twist is dumb. Wired: poetic, devastatingly romantic. One of Shyamalan’s best. Podcast- The Village

My favorite Shyamalan. It’s beautiful, it has a dynamic lead performance, and its story is beyond the simple points about recovery of faith that his other hits try to make. The twist is silly, maybe, but it’s also critical of itself in a way that feels intentional. Of course this movie’s twist wasn’t going to work forever. That’s the whole point. the lovely David Ehrlich talked about The Village with Griffin & I on this episode of Blank Check.

I am doing so fucking badly right now but this film makes everything better. A set of characters who fought to escape a system and did, ultimately imposing another set of constraints upon themselves because the only way us humans know how to function is through constructs and control; bedtime stories meant to give children nightmares, fascism, capitalism and corporate greed. The only way we know of to process ourselves is through meta-cognitive art; it is entirely genius that the end reveal of the film reconstructs the entire process of Shyamalan’s storytelling, as contemporary life continues to be a vicious cycle even for those who have managed to escape it: living outside human construct is all very well until you…

95/100 Serenely volatile cinema, and as gorgeously engulfing as anything M. Night Shyamalan has ever crafted. I usually try to not be one of those viewers that proclaims a particular film as “misunderstood” or “underrated”, but I still can’t fathom how the general audience sees this as a “bad Twilight Zone episode”, especially because even (and not only) on a surface level, The Village is astonishing. With Roger Deakins’ cinematography establishing unprecedented atmosphere and James Newton Howard scoring one of the finest soundtracks of the 21st Century; The Village flourishes because of its visual/aural elements, both of which compliment the tender love story at its core. M. Night tackles this tale with the mindset of being a genuine artist with…

That was less climatic that I anticipated, but this manner of storytelling perfectly captures the theme of this movie. We, as humans, tend to seek what comforts us more, in the name of hope, even at the expense of the truth and absolute freedom. A community driven by lies and manipulation, if you take at face value, will be frowned upon and perhaps that is why I felt disappointment when the truth finally came to light because I expected grandiose…

How do people not like this movie??? Unfortunately, I had already been spoiled on the movie’s plot twists, so they didn’t hit me nearly as hard as they probably should’ve. But even then, I had such a great time with the story and all the characters introduced here, and I can only imagine how much better this must be when you go in completely blind. My only criticism is that I really wish the movie had focused more on the…

M. Night Shyamalan Introspective Rewatch Original Score – 8/10 New Score – 9/10 This is my first rewatch since watching it in cinema when it originally was released. I remember feeling in the minority then when I had enjoyed it and even though I thought it wasn’t quite as good as Unbreakable and Signs (I hadn’t seen Sixth Sense at that point), it definitely didnt deserve some of the hate it got. On rewatch, especially as part of going through…

The concept of the village with the elders making efforts to maintain their conspiracy a secret, along with the backstory of why they came together in the first place and the philosophies they apply to their village as a result of that reasoning, are all highly intriguing material that lends itself to explore politics. When layered with its themes of grief, isolation, and it’s thematic metaphors of having manipulated everyone has a foundation to create a compelling narrative; however, the…

I will never know what it’s like to watch this blind. I knew the twist before watching but that was the case with the sixth sense and I think that movie is brilliant. This however is … not not brilliant. The atmosphere is intoxicating and kept me engaged enough that I forgot I was watching a movie and then certain dialogue moments reminded me “oh yeah” That being said, it’s definitely worth a watch. If you don’t know the twist. Keep it that way so you can have that experience for yourself.

Okay so, watched it again for the like 15th time and it’s still amazing. Good lord the visuals and the colors are so beautiful. Everyone looks so real- like REAL real. There are so many shots that feel so intimate. The framing makes it feel like you’re a part of the story in a way- sort of like youre someone in the village listening around corners. You’re there witnessing all of it happen. Like a ghost haunting the main characters.…

The twist was definitely written first and the movie made around it. It’s a simple premise about a village whose population lives in fear of creatures inhabiting the woods beyond it. The chemistry is fantastic be it Joaquin and Dallas Howard or Joaquin and Sigourney. The score is beautiful. It’s a very well directed movie. There are a lot of good elements to it. I just wish the script had been written by someone who could tie the story together better.

I don’t know guys. I thought it was pretty good! I’m just usually on board with what Night is selling me (given I’ve never seen Last Airbender, After Earth, or The Happening). I don’t know, cool looking secluded village in the woods. Creepy old folklore. Weird beast outfits. And a bunch of solid performances. Brody would probably be cancelled for doing that performance in modern day, but damn if he doesn’t commit the whole time. Look I knew the twist,…

Deeply implausible the more you think about it, but my wife and I really enjoyed The Village when it came out, and it was great to revisit it… what is it, 22 years later? Blimey. Our son loved it and wishes I loved it like I do The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. The thing is, so much of this movie works for me, but the reveals are more softly executed than I like, and I also just can’t suspend my…

“what good is it to tell you you are in my every thought from the time i wake?… i fear for your safety before all others.” lucius really said “i’m not good with words” and then proceeded to deliver one of the most beautiful declarations of love ever written. the atmosphere, the slow-burn mystery, the whole isolated village and the way the movie keeps making you question what is actually going on. and that plot twist??? genuinely got me. i know this movie gets a lot of hate, but i was completely into it.

I’ve always seen Roger Deakins’ camerawork as very utilitarian. It isn’t without its flourishes, but it doesn’t call attention to them. It’s concise and steady, and in being so flawlessly effective at expositing the information of the scene, it creates images that are completely immersive. His camera is invisible and there is such a grace to that.

Definitely not as good as his previous films but I really enjoyed it anyways. There’s something about Shyamalan’s directing that’s just so neat. Everything flows so well. Sure, this movie’s kinda stupid… And the dialogues aren’t particularly well written… and the acting could be better… but I liked it.

A cor ruim…a cor ruim…
