So it’s like a war drama laced with heavy newsreel footage and like 1/3 of the talking you’d expect from an early 60s US/UK war film. Wallach is front and center for a good chunk and uses the phrase “stupid idiots” no less than a dozen times as the main Sergeant in charge of the gang meandering through Europe round the end of WWII. Loaded with big names cameoing the pit stops the GIs make. I was baited AF with the chance of seeing Moreau and Mercouri in the same friggin’ moovy, and I saw them. Everyone you know is quite subdued, almosted ‘luded out. It’s like they knew I’d be watching this on a lazy Sunday and performed thusly. Coolest part was the Christmas/church songs back to backed with a snowy military execution, what a juxtaposition. Plenty to look at here with the classy b&w cinematography, but that’s mostly it. 3 stars for the pretty and my M&M girls.

I haven’t disliked a movie this much in a long time. It’s not even a movie, it’s just a collection of sub-plots masquerading as an anti-war film but really feels like a combination of an 80’s Teen Sex Romp and the major revelation that “war has no victors!”. The most I got from this was that war might be hell, but at least foreign women will put out while you’re overseas. INSERT EYES ROLLING OUT OF MY HEAD. I almost turned this movie off about half a dozen times but my insistence on watching everything through to the end forced me forward. Slog doesnt even begin to cover it, it felt like the movie was running in reverse just to fuck with me.

This film was disappointing. It alternates between fictional segments and archival news reels, and although we follow several soldiers through the whole film, the format demands that vignettes are short and I found the stories underdeveloped. The few with enough meat to go longer than 15 minutes are all cut off before they can realize their potential. It also leads to wasted talent. I watched for Jeanne Moreau, who has (relatively) lots of lines and gives a mic-drop quality performance of which writer/director/producer Carl Foreman must’ve been ignorant, because who wouldn’t want 2 1/2 hours of that??? Romy Schneider, Senta Berger, and Melina Mercouri could’ve done a lot more than look pretty, and Maurice Ronet could’ve done a lot more…

“The Victors” came out at the same time as “Dr. Strangelove.” Both were given strong ad campaigns touting their anti-war messages. One film has become a classic, the other is almost completely forgotten. Sadly, for good reason. Carl Foreman was a fine screenwriter, best known for “High Noon” and “The Guns of Navarone.” Based on the popular success of the latter, he was given the opportunity to direct and write “The Victors.” He leaned hard on the irony of war, that after any bloody exchange, the winners don’t feel much better than the losers. It’s not a profound point and Foreman pounds it out so frequently a child would get it. The film plays out as a series of vignettes…

When I first saw this, I was probably too young to recognise its great power as a piece of anti-war propaganda. Written and directed by Carl Foreman, who had been briefly blacklisted as part of the film community’s Red Scare, it is made up of a number of vignettes around a U.S. infantry squad during World War II. It’s a dark film in many ways. It starts off with a montage of newreels to get us up to speed, and then introduces Corporals Trower (George Hamilton) and Chase (George Peppard) who are guarding an army depot in a heavily bombed London, contrasting their silent performative fear with the whistling bobby on the beat. As they move across Europe, a number…

Carl Foreman’s epic Second World War drama charts the adventures of a platoon of Allied soldiers in Europe. Starring Vince Edwards, Albert Finney, George Hamilton and George Peppard. This World War II drama from director Carl Foreman definitely appeals thanks to having a star-studded cast, and it concerns a group of soldiers from the beginning right the way through to the end of the Second World War, following the group from Sicily to the Normandy landing and into the advance of Germany. The film focuses on all the characters from their individual way, their own experiences in battle and their own relationships with the women they meet along the way. With that synopsis, I can say this is one very…

A war film that effectively deglamourises war by making it absent from the narrative. The Victors is a really bleak 2.5 hours that focuses on the scenes between the gunfights. It is about women in wartime from the perspective of the American soldier. It jumps through 4 years of war (and post war), and the only gunfire we see is either an execution or a war-crime. The starts at Blitz, then Italy, racism, France, then liberating the concentration camps, and on and on. The film is a series of vignettes. Each vignette threaded together to make a whole. The film gets bleaker and bleaker as it goes. With striking scenes like an execution to anachronistic Frank Sinatra Have A Merry…

Carl Foreman described The Victors as his personal statement on war, a film with which he spends almost three hours failing to actually make that statement. An absolute chore of a film that’s slightly redeemed by a big cast that seems in the mood for business, it starts with a great scene as Peter Vaughan fearlessly patrols the streets as bombs go off around him, and then just doesn’t match that for the whole of the rest of the running time. Foreman decides to opt for a vignette style rather than having any major central story but it just doesn’t work. It ends up being a very long procession of half-formed relationships and events that Foreman probably thinks are extremely…

World War Two as seen through the eyes of two friends and their Sergent. Peppard and Hamilton have never been better before or since. Loved the inter cut propoganda films. An impression of War and all its myriad complexities. Brilliant right you til the final scene where it shows how we ended up where we are. Now bring out the full cut ffs!

This is such a strange movie. It’s an American-British production but feels closer to an Antonioni or Buñuel picture. If you’re going into this expecting a gun-ho action war epic you are in for immense disappointment, but if your mind is more calibrated to the aforementioned director’s work this is more than a perfect film to enjoy. While fighting is still going on, the film focuses on what happens in between the action, the interaction with the civilians and the war-torn streets of the small towns they pass through. This focus gives the film a powerful sense of melancholy, where the current grim predicament is ever present despite the moments of bliss. It is slow and rigorous in its depiction of characters, serving the story in small vignettes of intimacy. Very few films are able to perfectly capture the depleted and traumatic conditions of a post-war city better than this one has.

The Victors is Carl Foreman’s belated vision of World War II, and a film so destitute of merit as to qualify for emergency critical pity. The victors, according to Foreman, lose as much as the vanquired. This is true to a point, although the victors seem to be losing intangible things like honor, integrity, self-respect, and other banal abstractions, while the vanquished are losing tangible things like food, clothing, shelter, and in hack movies like The Victors, privacy in bed. How bad can war be when it enables American dogfaces to crawl into the sack with such continental booty as Romy Schneider and Jeanne Moreau? Civilians should have it so good. Of course, people get killed now and then, and no one is truly happy with all the beastly fighting, but hat only goes to prove that war is heck. —Village Voice, January 2, 1964

Made up of a series of short vignettes, separated by ironically and propagandistic period newsreel footage, The Victors follows a squad of WWII soldiers through the unpleasant experience of serving far from home. Uses virtually no combat sequences to potentially glorify war, creating a true anti-war film. The black and white photography is used to great effect. Somber and long, and may try the patience of some.

I wouldn’t fault anyone for not digging a 2+ hour bad trip, but I found most of the vignettes moving. I won’t be able to make it out to The New Bev when they feature this as part of their salute to George Peppard series later this month, but he’s pretty great here. “You know, it takes a soldier to do that.”

could really go either way with this movie I really like some of the stories and didn’t like some of the others, I appreciate Chudrantino giving me an anti war film on this project but you could feel the run time at some points. I do appreciate a war film that doesn’t go for one of the more “obviously bad” targets like World War I and has the balls to put its money where its mouth is about being consistently anti-WAR itself and go after something like World War II. It’s not subtle but it’s very effective and clearly an angry film.

The Victors has an unforgettable Battle of the Bulge sequence that has a title card from theatre management prompting guests to sing along with “Jingle Bells” as the GIs have snowball fights and army trucks drive through the snow only for the holiday joy to be undercut and juxtaposed with a firing squad execution of American deserters set to Frank Sinatras “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and as the execution concludes the chorus for “Hark the Herald Angel Sing” rings out. Really evocative moment in this otherwise cumbersome episodic epic with a bizarre Twilight Zone type of ending. Warning! Sexism, racism, and animal cruelty aplenty.

Newsreel footage added throughout. Lots of cool stars. Wiley experienced George Peppard and naive inexperienced George Hamilton. The movie is pointless. Nothing fucking happens. Randomly pieced together scenes between the “action”, with no apparent reason. Am I supposed to give a fuck about anybody in this movie??

Episodic WWII war drama following the exploits of a troop of US GI’s through the liberation of Italy, France, Belgium and finally Berlin and the various women that they meet. Plenty of irony in the script which was written, produced and directed by Carl Forman but the film simply ambles from one scene to the next with very little dramatic impact. The shooting of a deserter with the strains of christmas songs on the soundtrack is a highlight. Don’t look for too much on the action front as this is more a cerebral war pic.

I’m not sure what the film producers are trying to do , a mix of the gruesome part of war with a mix of sexy women actresses at the time . Ensemble cast .

This movie got a raw deal upon release and never made it to dvd . The only film directed by screenwriter Carl Foreman . Depicts weary soldiers in Italy forcing the Nazis out as the war drags slowly to the end. These are tired and traumatized men who don’t always act heroically as in your average WWII movies up until that time . A great cast and leisurely pace work well here .

1943, Jul 22? – 1946 Antiwar epic that follows a group of American GIs in Europe, beg. in Sicily. Told in a series of vignettes, punctuated by ironic newsreel clips. All but one deal w/ life behind the lines. Ends in ’46 in Berlin’s bombed out Soviet Zone. You’ll find no war lovers in this film. Based on a collection of short stories by Alex Baron, ‘The Human Kind’ (1953), but British characters have been changed to American. Opens in…

Never heard of this film but it’s a keeper … WWII at the end of the war, the story follows an ensemble cast concentrating on a few actors like George Peppard, George Hamilton, Eli Wallach, along with a who’s who of Euro actors like Romy Schneider, Jeanne Moreau, Senta Berger, Elke Sommer, as well as shorter appearances from actors at the start of their career like Albert Finney (as a Russian) and Peter Fonda. This movie is full of emotion…

A film so modern in both it’s style and anti war existential outlook, it’s trully impossible to really conceive it as what it is- a black and white war film that came out in 1963, what with all that framing suggests. Despite not being gung ho like that, the energy and intelligent and sheer variance of this film is amazing. We travel all over Europe, and a mosh mash of propaganda reels introduces and intertextual element that is trully modern,…

I’m still not quite sure how I feel about The Victors. I’ve never been a big fan of war films, with a few notable classics being exceptions. Despite this, I decided to give it a try and was met with mixed emotions. There were moments that genuinely evoked emotion, like the stray dog scene, but these were overshadowed by a lackluster storyline and the overuse of propaganda footage from the time. While it’s interesting to witness the historical context of…

Not a single combat scene and still delivers a brutal, hard hitting portrayal of war and the consequences. How it hits everyone and no one is a victor. I also loved the foreshadowing and outlying the potential future at the finale.

Enda filmen regisserad av notabla manusförfattaren Carl Foreman. WW2-epos nästan helt utan fightscener. Impressionistiskt berrätad i vigneter. En uppenbar inspiration för Sam Fullers The Big Red One, den filmen är visserligen bättre men väl en rip off av The Victors. Underbart svartvittfoto i scope. Det regnar nästan ständigt i denna film, vilket bidrar till känslan av melankoli. Det är sällsynt med krigsfilmer så sorgkantade som denna.

I liked some of it although most of it was hopelessly dull and I thought George Peppard’s character saved some of the more unbearable scenes. Now with all that being said, Michael Callan flips a cigarette in his mouth from his hands and it made me scream so really the movie is a about a two stars for me but my man Mickey deserves a five stars as always so I’ll settle on a four since I’ve gone to the…

In this impressive war chronicle, a bunch of film stars alternate with documentary newsreel footage. Screenwriter Carl FOREMAN (ACADEMY AWARD for The Bridge on the River KWAI) directs this COLUMBIA film for the only time in his career. The result is an impressive picture of the Second World War. Sergeant Craig (Eli WALLACH) and his unit (including Vince EDWARDS, James MITCHUM and the later CAGNEY & LACEY star Al WAXMAN) are actually stationed in England, but are repeatedly assigned to Italy,…

Another three-hour film—Carl Foreman’s epic of World War II, The Victors. The Variety reviewer has already written of it: “Skeptical but not cynical, the film is informed by thought and redeemed by compassion. It will make a lot of money.” I can neither support the first statement nor vouch for the second, but in their juxtaposition there is truth. Foreman has previously produced The Guns of Navarone, a boys’ adventure story of war, and The Key, in which war was…

“ITS SHODDINESS RUNS DEEP” Carl Foreman’s The Victors is a bad movie: its shoddiness runs deep. A collection of sentimental clichés tricked out in the. paraphernalia of Serious Moviemaking (mostly it looks like an Eisenstein movie caught in the process of metastasis), The Victors illustrates, strenuously, Foreman’s belief that war “degrades the victors equally with the vanquished.” If this seems in the first place a notion of not exactly relentless intellectual originality, it seems even less so when it develops…
