I frequently say “I’m not a De Palma guy,” which is odd because each of his films that I have seen have left such a positive impression on me. I so clearly am a De Palma guy.

Somehow went 32 years without seeing this. Got into a long debate with my viewing companion about to what extent the movie’s depiction of Eliot Ness was sincere or tongue-in-cheek, to what extent this mattered, and to what extent I was making excuses for a celebrated male auteur. Ultimately my feeling is that for De Palma, this movie is first and foremost an exercise in style, and a chance to traffic in the aesthetics and tropes of Old Hollywood gangster movies. I don’t think he really cares much about Ness, Capone, or the issues they raise. When Scorsese makes a movie, there is rarely any doubt that he feels the characters and the themes deep in his heart and his…

42/100 This was pretty strange to be honest. I feel like it could’ve been so much better. With De Niro as Al Capone and a score from the legendary Ennio Morricone i thought I would really enjoy it but that unfortunately didn’t happen. The score and tone of the film was pretty weird to me. I couldn’t tell if we were to take some moments seriously or not. The score was completely over the place. None of it was bad music but it didn’t work very well at all with the film. Acting was ok. De Niro did his best but I kinda wish there was more of him and Sean Connery had a strange Irish accent. I found Kevin…

An overtly ridiculous and boisterous effort that tests limits of integrity in ways seen in other works, but when mixed with De Palma’s classic visual brilliance, it’s a total and complete fucking blast. Costner and Connery are such an enchanting pair who play off each other so well, absolutely nailing every amusing and cathartic narrative beat. Plus, the split-diopter shots in this are to die for. Been one of my favourite De Palma’s for many many years; it’s safe to say that nothing has changed.

honestly SO silly, probably too silly for me. the Morricone score goes off too hard (loose endorsement). Andy Garcia has never been more beautiful (hard endorsement). great set pieces, generally, though perhaps no scene in the movie will live up to the pure joy of the second the credits started rolling, Dad shouting “who played THE BABY in THE UNTOUCHABLES?” into his phone. that said, I feel obligated to address my position of power as a Letterboxd microceleb (with regards to nepotism, industry connections, etc.) and come forward with the fact that: yes, my great uncle Seymour was an extra in the courtroom scene, visible at the 1:48:49-50 mark, sitting four rows back on the far right. by his account, “Bobby” De Niro was “very nice” (??), and that’s really all I got here. hope this clears everything up!

Man this movie is such a blast. Mamet doing a quintessential treatise on moral and ethical purity, treating this pulp like it’s “A Man for All Seasons”, and then just as miraculously De Palma is like fuck all this Thomas More shit, I’m making pulp here. And Morricone, I mean honestly. [70mm]

Not a big fan of cops or guns but I am the world’s #1 fan of the moment where Andy Garcia as a cop runs in and no-look passes a gun to Costner while sliding on the floor to catch a falling baby carriage like he’s auditioning for a John Woo movie. Oh and then he shoots that guy in the head and his brains splatter on the wall of Union Station. Coolest shit of all time.

I watched this movie with my mom last night, she had never seen it and she loved it. I can’t remember the last movie I watched with her that she made it all the way through. “So the woman with the baby at the train station had nothing to do with the bookkeeper? He just had to help her? That’s great! Kevin Costner sure is handsome.” This movie is mom approved.

this having an avg of almost 4 is wild. this was exceedingly average, paced kinda shittily, the plot was a bit silly and a bit boring, and just generally i found myself disinterested. idk. its just a mediocre movie. wouldn’t bother spending 2 hours on it, just watch three youtube shorts and you’ll basically have seen everything interesting. there’s just nothing in this movie worth giving a shit about

The premise of this film is incredible and I wanted so much to like much but everything else is such a let down. The action was lacklustre and the acting was genuinely bad. The film could have drawn you in with unpicking Al Capone’s empire but instead all of the twists are predictable, the plot unfolds scene by scene instead of having any flow to it, and the ending is unsatisfying. Even De Niro as Al Capone is disappointing, basically playing a caricature. Such a disappointment.

I wanna go there in the middle of the night and I wanna PISS ON HIS ASHES!” ……………………………………….. Robert De Niro has a total screentime of 10 minutes as Al Capone and he still manages to be one annoying, mean mfer.

Brian de Palma’s films always feature excellent high quality blood effects and this is no exception. The blood is just impressive looking and I love how many of the murder scenes are staged like Prohibition-era crime scene photos. The only real reason I don’t love this movie is Kevin Costner, that’s just how it is. Especially at this point in his career, I find his performances anti-charismatic.

Through both Morricone’s majestically off-kilter scoring and De Palma’s paranoia-fuelled tricks of the lens, this becomes such an effortlessly entertaining rewatch for me. Always craving for more De Niro scenery chewing ham, but richly compensated by some obligatory Connery charm and a pretty criminally underrated Costner turn (his eye acting on the rooftop alone is sublime). 80/100

A stylish, entertaining cartoon, with a focus-pulling De Niro playing to the back row of the upper tier. Costner tries to ground it with an occasionally out-of-his-depth earnestness (he’d get much better at this), but the Ennio Morricone score has little time for nuance. The Battleship Potemkin homage is unintentionally comic, but entertainingly so. It exemplifies the movie’s central paradox; despite a jarring mismatch between tone and subject matter, it’s a slick hoot all the same.

this movie is like when you give top tier high quality ingredients to a chef that doesn’t know how to treat them. yes, you’ll have a nice meal, but not as extraordinary as you expected. a lot of big names involved that honestly don’t shine at all, besides de Niro. that was the only thing that I thought would be good and actually turned out to be good

“Did he sound anything like that?!” One of the swaggiest movies created. Pure class from De Palma, the more I see the more I fall in love with that style. First-person oner through Connerys house was insane, feels like a prequel to The Departed before it’s time. One of the top reviews says it needed more De Niro, 1000% right, they could’ve added another thirty minutes to this just of Capone and I would love it even more. Definitely one…

Never stop fighting till the fight’s done I watched this in an attempt to scratch my ’Scarface rewatch’ itch. I should be fine for the week. In this house, we love George Stone. What he did on those stairs?! The only thing that tops that is Nitti spelling out “touchable” in Wallace’s blood. It really didn’t help that Meghan Trainor’s “untouchable untouchable” was resounding in my head throughout the runtime, but it was part of the experience ig. And yes, Wallace definitely went to the Tarantino school of posing.

I have some complicated feelings about this one. Kevin Costner is wooden as always but it works really well for his role as a federal finance agent who hates fun. The supporting cast is solid: Connery is Connery, Andy Garcia is in an atypical role is fun. – is a lovable dweeb. De Niro does a bit more character acting then usual and really owns the role of Capone. The Untouchables is immaculately shot. Lots of interesting angles/lighting choices. I…
