THE SON is a heartbreaking conversation starter not because the movie is good but because Florian Zeller crafted the single biggest disappointment of 2022. A massive step down from The Father. Hugh Jackman tries his hardest to salvage Zeller’s blunt writing, lazy visuals and poor analysis of a topic that deserves better from everyone involved.

Firstly, I don’t think this movie is as bad as everyone is saying. It’s not the best but still quite engaging. Hugh Jackman gives a great performance. Laura Dern is also good. Stories like this really are an advertisement not to have children. I love how Vanessa Kirby did not like the son one bit. The biggest problem was how the theme of mental illness was executed. The dialogue was very awkward and stiff. It was laughable at times. The child playing the son also wasn’t very convincing. Probably because of the script. Not the best but still interesting enough to watch. Loved the rich beautiful New York apartments.

Completely and utterly devastating. This floored me. Not surprising that so many people have reacted so negatively towards the film and performances, it deals with some uncomfortable and confronting issues in uncomfortable and confronting ways. I think this says more about the viewer than it does the film (reminds me very much of how people reacted to certain elements of 13 Reasons Why), or maybe I could just relate so closely to the film that I see it so differently and can see it for just how authentic and true it actually is. A terrific film, it’s a shame it’s been met with such a maligned reception. Adding to my DEPRESSION LIST

Florian Zeller doesn’t make films, he makes birth control at 24fps. Adapted from his play of the same name — and adding rich cinematic dimensions to the text’s ingenious structural conceit — Zeller’s brilliant and unsparing “The Father” shook people for how it simultaneously conveyed the confusion of suffering from dementia, and the heartache of losing a loved one to it. His follow-up, which similarly originated on the stage, makes the writer-director’s shattering debut feel like a “Paddington” movie by comparison (in terms of depressiveness and quality, alike). Lacking any of the puzzle box magic that allowed Zeller’s previous film to rescue profound traces of humanity from the massacre of its mental illness, “The Son” offers a stiff and straightforward…

Oh no the kid can’t act and the script did him zero favours The more I think about this movie, the less I like it. Zeller claimed to be making a movie about adolescent depression – but this movie is about someone DEALING with an individual with adolescent depression. This would be fine if I felt like Zeller had any understanding of how that depression would manifest in a person. Instead I was delivered a terrible performance rooted in terrible writing that feels more manipulative than it does sympathetic. I had no empathy for this child in pain and that’s a fatal flaw for this film.

“I’ve been dreaming about having a shower for.. a whole week” This movie is absolutely gut wrenching and does not deserve the hate it has gotten. Most people don’t realise the viewer’s perspective is through the father, hence why there is no full understanding of what the son is going through. And if I do say so myself the son’s acting was great. As someone who is currently struggling with chronic depression and suicide, his awkwardness and lack of emotions…

I loved this film so much. I think the concept was actually quite simple but it captured the feeling of depression beautifully (both to the sufferer as well as the loved ones affected). I watched it with my mum and sister and the first thing my mum said was that it resembled Beautiful Boy which is one of my favourite films of all time and one that I recommended to her highly. It will definitely be a film I refer to in conversations in future.
-
F
I can’t tell whether the kids acting was just awful or Nicholas was trying really hard to be manipulative and I believe it may be the first one🥹🙏

I see a lot of myself in Nicholas, the actor wasn’t the best but he still made Nick relateable!! I enjoyed this it reminds me a lot of Beautiful Boy even though it isnt about substance abuse Edit: AND that part where his dad told Nick to show him his arm. I know that heart dropping feeling, coming from multiple personal experiences just like that with my mom 🙁

I absolutely LOVE this movie, it is my favorite movie not just in its genre but of all time. As a person who has struggled with Depression and anxiety this movie really resonated with me. As heartbreaking as this movie is, I couldn’t shake the feeling that it was less a film about adolescent depression and more a film about parents dealing with someone who has adolescent depression. I understand that this was a deliberate choice by Zeller – he’s said he wanted to tell the story from the parents’ perspective – but for me, that choice is exactly where the film falls short. If you’re making a film about teenage depression, I want to…

I will NOT ever watch it again. A great and wonderful movie. It’s so realistic and relatable. I think teens and parents can relate to it and that’s why I find this movie so special. Parents and teens can relate to it form two different ways, but still feel each other. The acting of the son wasn’t really it but it was really emotional. I love this movie but I do not recommend.

Fuuuuck this was such a trigger movie, like I’m really sorry to say that, but yeah, especially with school absences and misunderstanding on the part of the father, in a way of teenagers in dispair and complications with this life and depression, rooted deeply in my soul, the thing is I never got understood the right way and I never really had a treatment, but I’m doing so much better now, it was long time ago, but still it was…

It’s accurate how the parents are naive. The son’s acting isn’t as awkward as people claim. It feels quite real because he’s detached from life, especially when he’s crying and begging his parents to let him leave. He isn’t actually crying to be let out, he’s just manipulating them because he wants to end his life, so it makes sense.

I hate how this was written. The dialogue is just a bunch of speaches rather than actual conversation, Nicolas just does the exact same thing over and over with zero character development, for some reason Peter is written as a really good, compassionate father one moment and then a second later he’s absent, unkind and it kinda makes the plot feel forced rather than properly developed. It oversimplifies mental illness so much, there was zero depth or explanation to Nicolas…

The movie overall meaning was an amazing thing to show awareness too. But the acting didn’t really make me feel connected. I personally think the acting wasn’t great but wasn’t bad. But I’m gonna talk more about the film cause this isn’t about acting. The film was a good representation off self harm (we don’t get many films that reference suicide or self harm) this was a good movie to show light on the struggles off a teen. And the…

This is kind of just a very poor depiction of depression and mental illness. I just don’t understand why Nicholas is being so demonized and treated like he’s the biggest burden ever. That feels like the exact opposite message you should be sending. People are making fun of Zen McGath’s performance way too much. Is his performance great? Fuck no. It’s not dog shit awful like people are making it out to be either. The script is just so bad.…

Seems like this movie got a lot of backlash and I’m not 100% sure why. I will say the story was a little rushed and there were a few plot holes but I thought the message was made. Hugh Jackman was really good as usual, the rest of the cast played their role well. Plus they really kind pull you this and that way during the ending. Not a great movie but one that is worth a watch at least once in my opinion.

[Actually… *sigh* I don’t know what to say about this movie] I’ve been sitting here for almost an hour thinking about what to write. I can’t give such a superficial review of this film when it’s about such an important issue. “I don’t know what’s happening to me… I’m not made for this life.” I had period where I had no idea what was going on in my life, like each day was harder than the last and I just…

Not the best movie, like a weird English film where they don’t choose the actors right. They do talk about mental health struggles but I honestly don’t think any of the writers know what it’s like because it just seems like they wrote about what they learned in middle school and what they saw people go through, doing no deep research what so ever on mental health.
-
C
A relatable tale that tackles depression in an interesting way, one that showcases that sometimes there aren’t key factors as to why people feel this way. It tends to just happen at times, and if ignored for too long could lead to tragic results. Never ignore those signs and do whatever you can to seek help or comfort loved ones during their own personal struggles. You may be the difference maker in the end.

A hard watch knowing what was going to happen. I thought the movie displayed a way of going through depression well and how things can change at the drop of a hat. I enjoyed the regret at the end of the movie showing the survivors guilt that those who left behind feel. The acting was really great by all the main actors, even if some of the dialogue seemed off. The emotions and slight facial movements displayed really brought the movie together for me.
