KAIJULY: MONKEE KONG I never thought I would say this, but Goji Jr.’s film is better than this. Basically a rehash of the original but way sillier and more boring. Not sure if this was intended as a comedy but I couldn’t help but laugh at a lot of the stuff here, namely the acting, where about everyone spends the whole film overreacting. The live-action stuff with the animation doesn’t really blend well and is very noticeable. The scene with them escaping and not getting smashed by the falling rocks was cool and there was a little bit of tension there, heightened by the score. The whole thing with the monkeys was so bizarre, yet so kind of cool. All…

Ranking the King (Kong, that is) You know, this is actually more fun than a lot of people give it credit for. Yeah, it was absolutely rushed out to capitalize on the success of King Kong (a mistake Toho imitated decades later with Godzilla Raids Again). I mean, this dropped a mere 9 months after the original Kong, with a significantly reduced budget. And yeah, the plot is just some fluffy nonsense and it takes way too long to get to Skull Island, but Willis O’Brien still managed to deliver some charming effects sequences and the whole thing still puts a smile on my face. Kong junior may not be a patch on his old man but the lad is one spunky monkey who may just win you over if you give him the opportunity.

Definitely not as good as the original. The stop-motion is still really awesome, and I love that. This one is pretty boring, and the story is pretty bad. Baby Kong was pretty chill, I liked him a ton

This one was basically a quick cash grab off of King Kong’s success. It was released about 9 months after the original, an impressive turn over for a sequel both then and now. It features a much smaller Kong who is helping the protagonists instead of foiling them. There’s about a third less runtime and significantly fewer monster encounters, one of which was just a re-run of an earlier fight from the original. I did find it somewhat entertaining from the perspective of continuing the story where the previous left off, I just feel like several things about the film were misses. The spontaneous earthquake abruptly ending the adventure seemed to be one of the weirdest writing blunders as we’re…

Son of Kong may be the first unnecessary sequel ever made. Such an obvious cash grab. I can’t think of character I would want to see less that King Kong Jr. Denham is back with some obvious remorse about what he did to King Kong. He’s broke and lawsuits keep piling up on him. The idea of going back to Skull Island to find buried treasure (that somehow wasn’t ever mentioned in the first one) was a decent enough plausible story. Once they reach Skull Island everything falls apart. There’s no sense of danger and Kong Jr. shows up instantly as a friendly guy. The filmmakers try to make him all cutesy and it’s just bad. Denham doesn’t even resemble…

Geoff T’s Hoop-Tober 5.0 Challenge Kong Double Bill #2 The Son of Kong (1933) The original Kong rocked everybody’s socks, so naturally enough RKO were more than quick to greenlight a sequel, following it up with Son of Kong in the EXACT same year. Yes, this is an early example of a cash-grab sequel, but I always felt it was decent at best. It’s got nothing on its predecessor, but makes for an interesting companion piece if nothing else. Set a month or so after Kong rampaged through NYC, Carl Benhem (Robert Armstrong) is in debt having been implicated in a series of lawsuits, so naturally he tries to get away from it all by escaping with his ship crew…

Released only 9 months after OG Kong and made for around a third of the budget, this sequel bears all the hallmarks of being a cheap cash-in. The cast is scaled back massively – Robert Amstrong reprises his role of Carl Denham, Frank Reicher returns as Captain Englehorn along with Charlie the Chinese Cook played by Victor Wong, inevitably accompanied by a Chopsticks-sounding theme tune. The only major new characters are Helen Mack as Hilda – a poor substitute for iconic scream queen Fay Fray – John Marston as the supremely unlikable Captain Helstrom and of course, Kong Jr. The acting was never the strong suit of the original film, and it wisely focused more on the action. Here, it…

“Row you blasted bourgeoisie” -Mutineer, And “Believe it or not there’s a little Kong” – Denham, – Kong Rankings: boxd.it/1Tifo In both films, Carl Denham had to catch a woman who was passing out. I find that to be strange but that’s just me probably. A lot of people don’t even know that this film exists (me, one year ago) but it’s actually pretty fun. Immediately following the aftermath of the original King Kong, Charles Denham is being chased by financers and insurance companies and being sued here and there. He hops on another boat and finds an island filled with performers… one who he takes a liking to… did we mention Kong Island is close? How else is going…

A cheap sequel to King Kong, rushed out a few months after the original film. Son of Kong is a cash-in in every sense of the word! The plot sees us pick up again with Carl Denham some time after Kong wrecked New York. He’s got several people on his back and is looking for a way out – so another trip to Skull Island on the hunt for some treasure seems an attractive proposition. It’s a shame because seeing how things turned out for this character could have been an intetesting prospect, but we don’t spend much time on that – instead focusing on a few hijinks on the way to the island, which finally appears over halfway through…

(Spies and Kaiju Marathon: Part 3 out of 79) After not watching this film for 5 years and, in all honesty, forgetting a good amount of it, I finally decided to rewatch it for this marathon, and despite what many others think, I don’t think it’s as bad as it is given what the film had to go through to get released. Keep in mind, this entire movie was made in the span of 9 months and had to be…

To be fair, making a sequel to King Kong must have been daunting. Most people don’t even know Son of Kong even exists. Rushed to production on a fraction of the budget, Son of Kong doesn’t have the grandeur of the previous film; we spend about half of it on what’s supposed to be in Vietnam or on the SS Venture. Apparently the writing was done to make it “not better, but at least funnier” and for what it’s worth…

Son of Kong epitomizes the adage, “if you can’t make it bigger, make it funnier.” And while the comedy in this film may have different mileage depending on your sense of humor, it does serve this particular story with a sense of storybook charm. Enhancing the feel-good vibes are the actors and the ensemble’s chemistry is apparent. Robert Armstrong is relishing the chance to deepen Denham’s journey and Helen Mack steals the show as the aggrieved, yet firey, Hilda. Special…

This one obviously doesn’t have as much going for it as the original. Which makes sense as it was made during the Great Depression so it’s excusable to sacrifice artistic vision in order to feed your family, but that doesn’t mean almost a whole century later I have to like it. Having that said, I did like Carl Denham’s arc from the first movie to this one. Simple, but endearing in my opinion.

You may notice this came out the same year as King Kong, which might lead you to believe this is a rushed job of a movie. Well I’m here to tell you, it is. Liked the monkey circus show, and the stuff we do get with Kong Jr. is fun even if he’s a giant dumbass baby.

Just a cash grab attempting to copy the original, leaving out most of what made the first one so great. It is rather enjoyable and doesn’t overstay its welcome. An unnecessary sequel, but not an unenjoyable one.

This came out nine months after the original. Some women had pregnancies last longer than the wait between the two movies! Given that Ruth Rose pretty much openly admitted she couldn’t write a better movie than the original, I’m mostly just impressed that the starting premise of “Robert Armstrong is completely in the hole emotionally and financially from King Kong destroying the city” is actually pretty good. Then it gets boring because the monkey is barely in this one and isn’t as expressive.

Kong was a problematic fave but Son of Kong was too good for this world. This fuckin guy already got enough people killed in the first one but he goes and fucks everything up for everybody in this one too. Then gets rewarded with love AND riches! Enjoyed Helen Mack as the love interest with a lot more fire in her belly than Fay Wray’s in the first and the boat crew that throws the bosses off the ship, unwilling to be in another Kong movie.

“Little Kong” is pretty bad, but in a fun kind of way – definitely tongue and cheek, but holy moly there’s so many pages of terrible dialogue. Weirdly violent language as cheerful humour. Little Kong gets a giant bear in a headlock and punches its face. That might be the highlight. Which I suppose says something.

Wait I didn’t realise there was a sequel to ‘King Kong (1933)’… Oh, that’s why. Like a child, ‘The Son of Kong’ is extremely underdeveloped. Trying to launch from the success of the classic movie, this film was released in the same year as the original, and there’s a reason very few talk about it. The picture feels like it’s missing everything that was brilliant about ‘King Kong (1933).’ Aside from the great stop motion (which was much more comedic…

So King Kong (1933) is remembered for two things mostly: the amazing special effects and its racism (and sexism); Son of Kong if remembered at all, is mostly remembered as an early example of a cash grab sequel, the lesser of two – but here is the thing, I like Son of Kong more – now to have this out of the way first, King Kong (1933) is the more visual impressive movie, it shot composition is more daring, I…

I’ve always had a soft spot for The Son of Kong. Released just nine months after the massive success of the original, it’s this incredibly brisk, oddball little sequel that works best when it stops trying to compete with the sheer scale of the first movie and just leans into a lighter, almost goofy vibe. At a super-lean 69 minutes, the whole thing flies by. I love the opening scenes with Carl Denham dodging creditors and dealing with the fallout…

If King Kong had a son, where is the Baby Mama? Was Kong trying to step out on her with Ann Darrow in 1933’s King Kong? These are but a few of the questions asked, and not answered, by 1933’s The Son of Kong. Yes, this sequel came out later the same year as the original. April 1933 for the original, and once that was a hit, a money grab follow up was rushed and was released that December. The…

Missing the absolute grandeur of the original King Kong. While some of the monsters do look good, I feel like overall it was a downgrade from the first movie. Beginning drags on for too long, leaving us barely any time on Skull Island. Finale is especially rushed, and it feels the flood comes out of nowhere. I like Little Kong cooperating with the humans, even if that contradicts my interpretation of the first film. Charlie the Cook rightfully got more screen time. Helstrom organized the mutiny far too quickly.

„Good Boy, little Kong!“

OK movie, although a pretty huge downgrade when compared to the original. First thing I can say about this movie is that the pacing is nowhere near as good. This film is 70 minutes long, and it spends 40 minutes of its runtime not on Skull Island, instead choosing to focus on pretty unengaging drama with uninteresting characters. There’s an interesting bit that’s set up with Denham feeling guilt for his responsibility for Kong’s death and the events of the…

Well, I guess it is no wonder that I had no idea that King Kong had an almost immediate sequel in an effort to cash in. It is a modest affair, especially if compared to the magnificence of King Kong. Much of the talent of that film returns for this one with Ernest B. Schoedsack directing, Merian Cooper producing, Ruth Rose scripting and special effects by Willis H. O’Brien. And on screen Robert Armstrong, Frank Reicher and Victor Wong return…

all of the problems of the first movie plus a whole slew of its own. it takes over half of the run time for little kong to show up and then he doesn’t do anything before the whole island gets destroyed???? i honestly kind of hated this but little kong himself was fun. the bear fight ruled.

i know this is shocking but it’s not very good. some really cool stop motion but you have to wait an eternity to get to it and even then it’s only a few scant minutes. the ending is what really gets me though, it actually annoyed me and dragged the already not great parts down even more. pretty short at least so it was easy to throw on out of curiosity.

Of course a silly, childish story for the money, but the stop motion techniques were way better than any CGI nowadays. It created weight, clashes of forces, shortly believable scenes.

The somewhat obscure sequel that was rushed and put out the same year as the original. It does take a long while in a short movie to get to the island and Little Kong. King Kong premiered March 2nd, 1933 and was a global phenomenon. RKO pictures fast tracked this sequel to try and capitalize on the success of the original. And just 9 months later on December 22 (The) Son of Kong was RUSHED into theatres… and well. It feels like it. It’s probably one of hollywoods first real turnaround cash grabs. Flat 1.5 Barely a movie. Made in the same year as King Kong and it really shows. I found the idea that Carl Denham, the absolute sociopath who had no regard for human life in the original, felt guilt and wanted redemption (after 11 lawsuits) pretty interesting, but that and a goofy fun kid Kong design are more or less the only positives here

Conceived less than a year after the success of King Kong, Son of Kong is a lousy cash grab that is an incredibly unworthy sequel. Not only did it have a rushed production and reduced budget but, it was so tonally different from King Kong. In King Kong, there was a sense of awe to the predator known as King Kong. But in this film, it’s just a silly gorilla in a toned down Skull Island and a bad Ann Darrow substitute. And while not as tragic as the first ending, this one was certainly sad.

Kaiju Katalog Review #2: A great followup/addendum to the original released the same year, this time with far less racism (aside from one moment) so that’s a huge improvement in that department. Hilda actually had a lot more agency and self-determination then Ann did, even if she was still treated rudely, so that’s also a massive improvement. While the body count is far lower, this film solidified the adventure blockbuster with the whole “taking the treasure from the ruins causes…

I was shocked to see that the original King Kong had a sequel. I’m also shocked to read that King Kong released on March 2, 1933 and The Son of Kong released on December 22, 1933. The short turnaround between films is very noticeable in The Son of Kong. This is a movie with cool ideas, but rushed to be released quickly in order to capitalize on the success of the original while it was still fresh in audiences minds. …

J
The Son of Kong (1933) is a surprisingly lighthearted follow-up to King Kong, and as a result never manages to convey the awe, scale and tragedy which made the first film so great. A palatable tale by virtue of its quickness and daring though somewhat abbreviated with much lesser odds and the protagonist, definitely not the epic of King Kong. Its special effects are admirable given the limitations of the era, but it’s hard not to see this as just a little addendum rather than a proper successor. There are flashes of enjoyment to be had here, but it never quite matches its precedent.
1 -
L
High 5 It doesn’t take much to see the clear cash grab this was. It follows a very similar plot to the vastly superior original but is much less interesting in every way. Regardless, there is some entertainment to be found with the special effects, and especially Kong Jr.
-
C
A famous man in the entertainment industry actually faces the consequences of his reckless, harmful actions? Totally unrealistic. And then he hooks up with a young woman who he only refers to as “kid”? Yeah, that sounds about right.

-
D
Obviously rushed out on the cheap this isn’t as bad as its reputation. The idea of Carl Denham having to return to Skull Island to find some way to pay fot the damage daddy Kong caused is a pretty fair continuation of the story and WIllis O’Brien’s animation is as good as in the predecessor. It’s just a shame we don’t see more of it. The random natural disaster finale seems to indicate they didn’t know how to end the movie.

This whole movie is like that one scene with the crummy monkey orchestra. Everyone is completely clueless on what to do and Kong Jr. has less than ten scenes and he doesn’t do much in any of them. They were just scraping the barrel for cheap cash and thrills at this point.

DVD rewatch. I have always liked Robert Armstrong’s portrayal of Denham. Sure, many people died because of his actions, but hey, he’s a stand up guy! LOL. What I enjoyed this time is that it is basically a hang out movie. The movies final act – returning to the island – was a lot of fun, but this cheap and quickie sequel seemed like an unpleasant experience for everyone but Robert Armstrong, whose vanity was soothed by playing a romantic lead. A very rushed sequel that does very little that the original didn’t do. Love the ape’s personality but the human characters are even less likeable in this one than the original. Bro literally destroyed that tribe’s village in the first movie by releasing a giant ape into it, then he comes back in this one, steals their cursed diamonds, and brings a huge storm that sinks their whole ass island. The man is an absolute menace. Unfortunately, the filmmakers did not use a time machine to travel into the future and read my review of the first King Kong movie, because they repeated the mistake of having a very dull plot involving no stop-motion apes or dinosaurs take up the first half of the film. I like all the stuff on the island though.

I watched this movie on what I called “Large Sons Day”, the Saturday after the mantle of “America’s Large Adult Son” was handed down from Donald Trump Jr. to Hunter Biden, so of course I followed it with “Son of Godzilla”. It warms my heart to know that unnecessary sequels have always existed. This movie felt so rushed yet it spends nearly half of its runtime setting up everything. It takes over half of the movie before we even see the titular character. I wasn’t expecting this to be good but I hoped we wouldn’t have gone this far downhill so quickly. I liked the attempt at showing the aftermath of the previous movie. And it shows how Denham tries to…

It takes Baby Kong 43 minutes of a 69 minute movie to show up. I’m shaking with rage

really underrated piece of media if you ask me. Kiko Kong is the first ever giant cinematic monster to have a personality of his own, who can develop feelings and learn like baby gorillas do i honestly think it’s so cute when he saves Carl from that storm and just protects him and Helene across the whole movie like awwww ain’t you just a kindhearted puppy you silly little monkey i gotta say i liked this one more than the…

Following King Kong’s fateful rampage, filmmaker Carl Denham (Robert Armstrong) is being hounded by lawyers, journalists, and angry New Yorkers. Frantic to escape the legal consequences of bringing Kong to America, Denham jumps aboard the nearest cargo ship. Motivated by both a mutiny and the promise of riches, Denham ultimately finds himself back on Skull Island. Befriending an oversized albino gorilla dubbed The Son of Kong, Denham and his entourage avoid killer dinosaurs while engaging in a treasure hunt. In…

There are decent ideas for a sequel in here: Dunham feeling remorse for his actions, returning to Skull Island for bury treasure, another Kong on the Island, but this feels like something that was just scrap together after the success of the first Kong (which is apparently what did happen). This movie is fascinating because it feels like not enough is going on and too much is going on. It’s sluggish yet feels rushed at the same time. The love…

An okay sequel to King Kong. Not great but not as bad as a lot of the reviews here would lead you to believe. I like the premise, which follows the disgraced and remorseful Carl Denham as he embarks upon his redemption arc for basically causing Kong’s rampage in the first movie. The biggest thing that drags the film down is its small scale. It was rushed out in nine months on a shoestring budget and it shows. The whole…

Battleship Potemkong.

Classic black and white film with sound stages, mixed effects like painted backdrops and projections with sculpted pillars, buckets of rain, avalanches, and more. Stop-motion Kong in scenes with live actors. Monster fighting. Dramatic instrumental soundtrack. Hidden treasure. The man who unleashed and then vanquished King Kong has no reason to return to the island… until a whiff of treasure creeps under his nose. A dame stows away to follow him. In the jungle, he saves Kong Jr who later…

Maybe the first recorded instance of “the first one made a LOT of money, so of COURSE, we’re doing a sequel!” Willis O’Brian and team are the only ones really bringing the same heat that they brought in the first movie because everything else is just BLAH. The script is mundane and incredibly simple, the direction is sluggish, the camerawork has a couple nice shots but is otherwise pretty by-the-numbers… The Son of Kong feels like everything that the first…

Both myself and the boy were getting pretty sleepy before this ended up on (as he calls it) Kong Skull Island.

Lol at the idea of Carl Denham being in crippling debt as he’s sued by the entire city for Kong’s path of destruction. Disappointed to find that the albino baby kong made me feel nothing at all. Preferred the dinos, lizards, bears, oh my, and such. 2 bones

Yep it’s definitely one of those unnecessary sequels who solely exist for a cash grab

50% of this movie is boring filler and the other 50% is absolute cinema.

The effects are still good, but there’s also still too much yapping at the beginning. No story, just more King Kong with a goofier looking ape.

Mega Godzilla Marathon #5 a solid 70 minute nothing-burger. unbelievably worse than King Kong in every way; it’s actually impressive how fast they turned this around though (9 months from the original) & how little there is to show for it. Son of Kong does hit a Deadpool fourth-wall break, which is something, if not solely for how out of place it feels

I don’t know what I expected from a cheap cash-grab that was released the same year as the original. I guess I was expecting at least a bit more of, you know, the Son of Kong

It’s pretty impressive what all they could pack into a scant 70 minute sequel 9 months after the og. Lil Kong is a sweet baby boy.

I tried for 20 minutes to get this to work on my usual shady movie website but it would only work in German with no subtitles so I eventually had to find it on YouTube. Safe to say that should have been a warning not to watch this

I like the band of monkeys and Hilda’s singing. Otherwise a pretty boring movie that tried to keep the hype of the big monkey going.

“Did you ever catch a monkey?” “Did I ever–? Lady, you have no idea.” Son starts a week after the closing of the first film, instantly bugling that Robert Armstrong’s Denham returns, he’s in the thick of it for the ramifications of Kong’s rampage and is dodging legal summons while hiding in his flat; landlady coming to his aid when a disguised man manages to get in to serve him papers, to which he waxes remorse over what he unleashed…
