Good lord, the close-ups!! The way Jonathan Demme shoots men in this movie is outstanding. Such a simple but unnerving choice to have them talk straight down the lens so we can sit in Clarice’s discomfort. Hopkins is obviously giving an all-time performance here but his delivery of “love your suit” kills me. That’s the moment he cinched the Oscar, I just know it. Weird to see so much of this movie for the first time (yeah i know) and have it feel so familiar because of years of video essays and parodies tackling this shit verbatim, but it still shook me to the bone. What a phenomenal psychological thriller. The atmosphere, suspense, storytelling, and performances are absolutely incredible. But Dr. Hannibal Lecter… oh man! 🥶 Anthony Hopkins was absolutely terrifying. His calm voice, expressions, intelligence, and the way he controls every conversation make Lecter one of the most iconic characters in cinema. He barely needs to do anything to make you uncomfortable. Jodie Foster as Clarice Starling was also fantastic, and her psychological battles with Lecter were the highlight of the movie. The movie creates fear through silence, tension, and psychology rather than cheap jump scares. A true masterpiece. Hannibal Lecter alone is unforgettable.

An insanely thrilling, intense physiological thriller that left me on the edge of my seat throughout. Not to mention two of the most fantastic acting performances of all time. My god Anthony Hopkins is just phenomenal. Maybe the greatest performance of all time. I really admire the camera work used throughout. The use of close up’s in the interrogation scenes heightens the feeling of dread and worry brilliantly. This movie is an absolute staple thriller and deserves all the credit it gets. Perfect!

It’s really fascinating how Demme tends towards them rather than master shot or a profile master shot, especially in those dialogue scenes between Lecter and Clarice. Maybe it loses the pace a little sometimes, but this is supremely high quality filmmaking, superbly written, and Hopkins in particular is absolutely mesmerising every second he’s on screen. Throw in one of Howard Shore’s finest scores, and an incredibly grim and dark atmosphere and tone, and you’ve got as close to an all-time classic as you ever will. And then it has the audacity to end on the corniest of jokes.

Gut, aber nicht fehlerfrei. Ich sollte ihn wahrscheinlich noch einmal schauen, wenn ich wacher bin, zur akkurateren Einschätzung.

Både Anthony Hopkins og Jodie Foster er som skapt for rollene sine. Lecter er en psykopat, og Hopkins utfører den rollen utmerket; vi vet at han er ond, men han er fremdeles veldig sjarmerende og vi heier på han, av en eller annen grunn. Alt dette forsterker en allerede veldig spennende film.
