Rang in the new year rewatching this with my 15 year-old son (his first time seeing it), and my father, who is visiting for the holidays. A perfect film, and a perfect evening, with three generations of my family appreciating this timeless story of friendship, endurance, and hope. My father was 45 when it came out, two years younger than I am now. I was 16 when it came out, only a year older than my son is now. I wonder who he’ll be the next time he revisits it.

Brooks was here. There’s something truly devastating about that particular scene. The one where we find something that’s been completely lost, the soul of a man no longer recognizing his own body, his way of living. Hope no longer visible to the eye, the freedom that a cloistered human so long dreams of never materializes into anything that is of any true meaning to him due to the inability to adjust to new times, to a new life, after spending so many years living in a certain way. It’s heart shattering. For all its hopeful and hopeless moments and the dialogue that makes us think about life and how we perceive it and other people as well, this is an incredibly touching and emotional piece of cinema, one I should’ve watched ages ago.

“Everybody in here’s innocent, didn’t you know that?” Watched this for the first time in ages as the latest guest on Fangoria’s THE KINGCAST. I say as much on the podcast, but one thing I kept thinking this time around is how little the film’s ideas about the inhumanity of prison have been adopted by the predominant white male college-aged demographic that made this movie the top film on IMDb. I fully believe the depiction of police in media heavily contributes to America’s lionization of the police, and our wrongheaded belief that they’re an organization of heroes that keep the darkness at bay– and yet we have a reverse dynamic with prisons (a near-unanimous media depiction of prison as an…

Such a good, entertaining interesting film. It raised a really interesting topic of how prisoners integrating back into society after long sentences can be really difficult, which isn’t often portrayed in media. I also liked that Red and Brooks’ perspective provided insight into repeat offenders, because the adjustment into society after being in prison for so long can be so challenging due to the prejudice against criminals, and lack of acceptance and compassion.

one thing I relate from this movie is about the danger of becoming so accustomed to your cage that freedom starts to feel irresponsible it’s like getting so used to being alone and just stay at home 24/7 not caring about what’s happening outside, i’m well aware and it’s such a dangerous habit but this movie was lowkey eye opening in my perspective.

I find all the actions surrounding hope so beautiful. Andy just wants to remind them they can’t take hope away from you. But the film doesn’t let hope off that easily: Red and his “hope can drive a man insane.” I think both are right, and I think the movie needs both. What saves it is Red. He spends forty years calling hope dangerous, and the last thing he does is walk to Buxton anyway. Hope saves a man if…

“Get busy living, or get busy dying” Ahh Damn

An award winning classic that upon watching I completely understand. There’s a lot to be celebrated in this film on many fronts, but what’s sticks out the most to me after the first viewing is the acting. The story and setting being what it is, the characters take center stage, specifically their motivations. Every actor played their characters with expressions and mannerisms that felt natural, conflicted, and worth considering. The ambiguity of an expression, but the immediate ability to see…

writing this as i am holding some cry in me. Wow i just feel so good about the way it turned out ; i feel conforted just knowing that he managed to get out and change the course of his life, which, along the duration of almost his entire life, he was certain that was condemned to be suppressed and held back by imprisonment. What i am saying is that he once thought that there was no possible way of…

Some movies are great because of the performances. Some because of the writing, direction, or emotional impact. The Shawshank Redemption is one of those rare films where you look at the whole thing and struggle to find a single piece that isn’t working. And for me, the idea that really sits at the center of everything is hope versus institutionalization. You genuinely could build an entire college thesis around that conflict alone. Shawshank doesn’t treat institutionalization as simply becoming comfortable…
