I’d do the same thing in that situation… if I were as badass and intimidating as Guy Pearce is in this. I’m a sucker for unflinchingly violent, thoroughly intense, quite harsh and bleak post-apocalyptic films with an awesome lead and a slow-but-steady-burn pace, as well as (in my opinion) some perfect final moments; and The Rover fit the bill perfectly. Wasn’t expecting this to become one of my favorite films of the year, and I definitely wasn’t expecting to be this impressed by Robert Pattinson. I’ll be checking out David Michôd’s other film, Animal Kingdom, very soon.

the future sucks. did we need another movie about the horrible emotional toll living in a post-apocalyptic wasteland takes? spoiler alert: some of these characters struggle to hold onto their humanity. i dunno, gimme some bikers with crossbows or sexy feral chicks or radiation-suited bad guys with flamethrowers. something.

RECOMMENDED BY THE ONE AND ONLY DENIS VILLENUEVE… I MEAN JACOB Here’s a movie that most of us have heard of, especially when discussing how talented Robert Pattinson is, though it never gets brought as much into the discussion as Good Time and after seeing this, it makes all the sense of the world as he gets rarely that too much screen time and often feels like he’s playing one note. A great one note, but one note nonetheless. Truth is this movie belongs to Stephen Dorff, I mean Hugh Jackman, sorry, Guy Pearce. He does a great job playing this archetype of the tough, Lone wolf in the same fashion as Eastwood used to do back in the days…

I’m not sure if I’ve ever loved Guy Pearce more in a film, and that’s coming from someone who owes the onset of his love for cinema to Christopher Nolan’s Memento. Robert Pattinson has made a complete career transformation, moving away from the likes of the Harry Potter & Twilight films, and working instead with directors like Michod and Cronenberg (both very talented Davids indeed ;D). I never thought that I’d be saying this, but Edward Cullen is beginning to impress me greatly. This is a film which is certainly carried by its actors, but that’s not to say the other aspects of the film aren’t stellar as well. The cinematography is outstanding, severals shots and scenes being absolutely breathtaking; Natasha…

Tense (with great performances!) but very slight when it comes to substance. Pearce and Pattinson deliver, however this isn’t even top 3 of their best performances.

We don’t talk enough about this criminally underseen & underrated post-apocalyptic western. So brutal, moody & tension-filled. Guy Pierce is predictably great but this film totally caught me off guard just how talented Robert Pattinson is.

40/100 Las Vegas Weekly review, in which I had insufficient space to poke holes in the film’s idiot plot. To take just the inciting incident, hey bad guys: (1) Since you stole Pearce’s car because you thought your truck was totaled, and can now see that it isn’t, why not just give him his fucking car back? Problem solved. (2) Given that you’re not gonna do that, for whatever wonky reason, why not kill this unarmed avenger who seems pretty determined to come after you? Isn’t this supposed to be a post-apocalyptic wasteland where life is cheap? Certainly that’s the movie’s ostensible point. (3) Given that you’re not gonna do that, for the love of motherfucking christ just take the…

Yikes that was sad and boring! Robert Pattinson is unrecognizable in this film. I actually had to verify it was him. Lots of horrible stuff in this post apocalyptic world.

Australian people sure do know how to do crime thrillers. I feel like the role description to Robert Pattinson was basically you are a 30 year old who acts 17, still living in your parents basement and he said GOT IT! Little slow but good overall

2026 MOVIE #253 A hidden gem! The world’s gone to shit and we follow the lead living in this very dystopian outback Australia. The story is quite simple, but it’s effective. The production is amazing. Guy Pearce delivers once again! It’s a very subtle performance, but you can see he’s carrying some trauma behind those eyes. Robert Pattinson is awesome again too! Highly recommend! (Watched on Stan)

A Minimalist Masterpiece… David Michod’s powerful, post apocalyptic drama is stripped of all Hollywood conventions. There is no expository dialogue, gratuitous action scenes, or elaborate plot. It’s laser focused on one character and a very small but specific objective. Some consider this small, I call it huge. The film’s focus is on the characters, themes, and world. You’re thrown in a post apocalyptic setting and given no real context, creating raw immersion. You’re given a central character who barely speaks…

This movie will be best-remembered in some YouTuber’s video essay on the eventual look back at Pattinson’s 2020s run of movies, but the scene of him in the car singing girly pop music will be called a “precursor.”

Phenomenal performances from Guy and Rob. They heavily carried the film, and the soundtrack was fantastic as well. Left a bit to be desired in terms of filling out the run time, but besides that I really liked it. I guess it was missing something that i can’t quite put my finger on, but it feels like it’s almost there, i thoroughly enjoyed it although felt like as someone else mentioned, it could have been a short film given the limited exploration of the story. I’ll be coming back to this one for sure.

THAT’s why he wanted his car so bad??? hmmm idk man. Love Aussie cinema and both the main performances so much, but this dragged a tad too much for my liking. Especially when it didn’t quite stick the landing.

Kind of like a Mad Max movie but with no fun allowed. Honestly, looks very good and has plenty of great moments (that Keri Hilson needledrop boggles the mind.) Guy Pearce and especially Robert Pattinson are both very compelling and the bond they’re forced to share has a lot of potential for interesting thematic substance, but I feel like Michôd keeps it way too understated out of fear that letting it develop will make the movie overly optimistic. I can appreciate…

Tight focused story that was well executed. Very understated. The beginning of Robert Pattisons career of weird little guys with surprising accents. Just not the most compelling story for me.

Incredibly eerie and paced scoring.

Robert Pattinson is insanely talented, this role really showcases how well he can embody a character. I’m a sucker for a post apocalyptic setting but especially when it’s as raw as this. Heart wrenching and I had no idea where this was headed at any time.

Pacing was way off, music made if feel B rated and that’s what kept it from being more than I gave it. Pattinson once again excellent performance. Guy Pearce proves himself as well, (with half the lines I might add,) because of the expressions, stares, and raw emotion he wears on his face throughout this flick. I woulda gone to war for Rey.

Just saw this again recently, but wasn’t affected as much as I have been in the past. It’s pretty amazing though how thin the script in this movie is and how well it works. Feels like when I’m writing or thinking of ideas I’m usually asking all these questions that it seems like this movie doesn’t even bother to end is better for it.

In a World where the global economy collapsed, Where Money isnt really a currency anymore, we are set in a Dystopian Western Landscape in the Outback. Not a movie I would recommend but one that I still enjoyed. I find it hard to draw any comparisons but I like a movie that is out of the ordinary. Nothing is explained and there are still many questions at the end which is for the best because there is no need for another half-baked story of why the future becomes a dystopian wasteland. I see people’s frustration with the plot holes but Pierce and Pattinson make up for that with their amazing acting. It’s also possible that I am biased towards the short nihilist stories.

Cormac-McCarthy-type-of-shit. Don’t know what’s wrong with me, but I somehow dig this kind of extreme bleakness in movies. Paired with its neo-western style – of course this got me. Top-tier performances from the two leads… which, let’s be honest, shouldn’t come as a surprise, considering they come from two of our very best actors working today. (Man, Pattinson can really do it all, huh?) Lingers too much in the middle and is a bit too detached for my liking to fully take off, but nevertheless sticks the landing in a strong way. Good watch.

Loved this. I don’t really know why I loved it so much, but here we are. First of all, this is a criminally underseen and underrated movie. Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson are spectacular in this and definitely some of their best performances in their careers. The cinematography was great too. Grainy, moody, bleak. Everything you want in a film with this subject matter. There were also a shit ton of flies which overall added to the nastiness of this film. Just amazing all around, can’t wait to see this one again

cool apocalyptic western, good shootouts and the film looks nice all the way through because of the lighting and cinematography. but the standout thing is Robert Pattinson, 100%. he is literally a chameleon, he can play any role imaginable and this is probably one of his best. he truly shines in this and its the main reason why the good scenes are good. that ending tho man, ts was sad.

Not a lot of extensive plot with some subtle but anti-elaborate backstory, but solid acting and great indy movie that could’ve used more plot length because for characters/character development. Et dire que tout ça était pour un putain de waf waf mdr. Bon, plus sérieusement, très bon film. Le scénario reste assez simple, mais le rythme fait clairement le taf : on ne voit absolument pas le temps passer. This rocked. Definitely has not been on my radar for long but from the moment I heard about it I knew that I needed to check it out. I’ve seen enough. Robert Pattinson is the greatest actor of his generation. He picks wildly different, challenging, and weird roles all the time and that is very commendable. His voice, his mannerisms, all of it was just phenomenal. Guy Pearce also killed his role. The story was kinda meh but the acting and last 20 minutes of this movie gave it my rating.

There’s something about Australian pictures that just get me to a base level of excitement that American cinema can’t do! Maybe it’s the realism in the flies. So many fucking flies Worth a watch just for Pattinsons voice The Rewatcher? Meh. Won’t say no, but it’s not a yes

Probably the first film that made me go “wait a fucking second” when it came to Robert Pattinson’s level as an actor. His turn as Rey here is astoundingly brilliant, pathetic and huggable. I also love the whole dog metaphor the film has… Guy Pearce is the old injured mutt that’s been living rough for ten years, snarling and growling at everyone, while Rey is the lost puppy thats super exited about anything and attached itself to the old dog…

Wanted to watch this after watching a cool video essay about Robert Pattinson. Movie starts off pretty cool and does some cool world building things. Protagonist was a bit too stoic for me and in general, I didn’t understand the decision making of any of the characters at any point in the movie. Why did the group of hooligans steal the dude’s car and then let the dude pull up on them? Why didn’t they just exchange cars again? Why…

first off this is probably the most realistic showing of what post apocalyptic life would be like. super miserable and just downright heanus. first half of this movie was dreadfully slow and boring with absolutely nothing happening. 2nd half of the movie was quite enjoyable tho, still very slow but nice plot points and incredible acting from Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson. you can really tell every character in this film is broken in some way. the ending is pretty good but not really satisfying overall. that being said its not great and there’s not really ever a plot or steady interest in what’s happening.

Many are leaving reviews attacking what appears to be an apparent lack of substance, meaningful overarching motif, and theme. Many are not I. I’m also a sucker for slow-burn films. Sue me. Anyways, let’s dig (ha, get it? Cause shovel and dog and… yeah). The Rover, above all else, is a film about the importance of relationships, bonds, and ties—both to the living and the dead—and what we’re willing to due in pursuit of them, in order to honour them,…

Guy Pierce is spectacular at playing characters searching for meaning in a meaningless world. This is a bare knuckle grizzly ass dystopian thriller that was really brought together by the ending.
