A symbol of early‑2000s horror, quoted and re‑quoted across countless later works, it finds its strongest side in that pre‑YouTube digital‑nightmare aesthetic: the cursed VHS, the glitchy imagery, the idea that a supernatural threat can spread like a proto‑viral piece of media. It works almost as a sociological phenomenon rather than a horror film, giving weight to the urban‑legend vibe that younger audiences once carried around like folklore. Gore Verbinski builds a thriller‑drama that leans on horror in a way…

Always loved the tone and colour palette of Gore’s work when he does horror and hope he makes a return. Despite an excellent performance by Naomi Watts, it lives in the shadow of Japanese film. Still, works as a very safe introduction to horror for anyone wanting to dip they toes with a movie that also works as a pretty solid mystery/suspense film.

God i miss color grading. This movie is so pretty and the cinematography is excellent. It was not at all what I expected. The emphasis on mystery and detective work really made the movie. I loved the twists. Its a shame that the only thing that holds cultural relevance for this movie is the creepy girl caus honestly its the least interesting part.

Get the tape, play at the field with 200+ people, Samara hunt one by one until she tired so much, and then she give up, she never do that again. Done and absolutely cinema

A time capsule of early 2000s technology intertwined within a story of ghost girls, psychic boys, and desperate mothers, all awash with a blue/green tint. Genuinely the cinematography, setting, and soundtrack of The Ring is so melancholically beautiful, such as within the scene where Rachel overlooks her neighbouring apartment building into their windows, and watches the inhabitants go about their lives, it’s somber and quietly moving.

This is such an art piece of a horror film, I can’t believe it took me so long to finally watch it.

There is a lot to The Ring. I felt like it was a murder mystery and I was a part of solving this crime. I loved the storyline and the video within it. It gave my brain something to pick apart instead of doing that to the movie. Not that the distraction was needed, I loved absolutely all of the acting. That little boy was horrifying and I loved how he mirrored Samara. It was one of the many diversions…

I obviously had really high expectations for this film due to the iconic TV scene but it didn’t really live up to my expectations. I didn’t think it was terrible or anything but I didnt find it psrticu scary and I didn’t find the overarching story surrounding Samara particularly interesting. I couldn’t get very connected to the characters and both of them just kind of acted stupid and a little annoying. 😭 again not a terrible film just not up…

I do like how the research for the tape’s origins was altered from the original Japanese version, I don’t understand why they made this movie so horse focused though, not a change I hate just one I don’t fully get

A little known fact about me is that as a child I was essentially fearless and wasnt scared of the dark, ghosts, heights, clowns, roller coasters, ET, or any other stereotypical thing that scares children. I thought that was, in my own, modern words, “some pussy shit”. I credit this bravery to the fact that at age 3 or 4 I was accidentally exposed to the Samara TV scene from the end of this movie. After seeing that nothing else…

Such an amazing movie. It has been 24 years and it still lingers as the movie that terrified a whole generation. I like how it seems like everything it’s going to be okay and then there is 17 minutes left, what else could they possibly show?, maybe that Samara isn’t just a murdered little girl, perhaps Samara indeed was the devil in disguise.

Rated way too harshly. No masterpiece, sure, but the entire movie carries such a 2000s charme. The visuals have had a lasting impact on me and while the characters are a bit shallow, this leaves room for the movie’s unique spin on the classic ring storyline. I enjoyed it a lot years ago and still do now 🙂

Disappointing. I was told this movie was really scary. Disturbing in some parts, maybe, but not really scary. I psyched myself out for scenes more than it was actually scary. The plot is messy and honestly made very little sense. It felt like they were going for too much and couldn’t figure out what kind of mystery they were going for. I thought it was a better mystery than horror.

Saw the Japanese original a few nights ago. Felt a primal compulsion to see this 2002 remake directed by Gore Verbinski. I’ll give credit where it’s due: The Ring is a pretty creepy and decent remake that cleverly subverts certain expectations/sequences and has the great fortune of starring a stellar Naomi Watts. However, this is also a cautionary tale of what happens when you take a fairly restrained Japanese film and try to recalibrate it for American sensibilities. While this…

An all time horror movie. But also a little investigative thriller as well. There’s a story that would add a lot of context to this rating, but that’s for me to know. Freaky shit happens whenever I watch this that’s all I’ll say. I cannot stand Aidan. Probably one of my least favorite characters in all of film. Just so fucking weird and becomes increasingly annoying as the film goes on. Cox cooking himself in the bathtub scarred me for a long time.

The key to a good horror remake is to get a little Raimi with it (editors note: Grace has not seen the original “ring”) Editing in this movie is crazy good so many cool overlays and cuts and single frames and cross fades, good stuff all around. Beautiful shots of Naomi Watts and also amazing looking environments, there’s this one super far away shot of Naomi Watts on an apartment balcony while Martin Henderson watches the tape really love the…

Legit had to sleep with the lights on for about a week after watching this. My roommate and I took turns pranking each other by turning the TV to static in the middle of the night. Good times! Funny how the first J-Horror American remake really was the best one to do it. It also frustrates me that this thing spawned so many heartless cash-grab followers. I think the film makers were trying to communicate something interesting here and building on the original idea in an interesting way. Does it have its flaws? Sure. Is nostalgia a hell of a drug? You bet!
