This is something I rarely compliment a movie on, but damn was this script sharp. I felt every insult, threat, and sincere moments this movie threw. The writing behind this is really elevates the material that made me glued to the screen. Another reason for that is its cast, mainly the big three. There are other actors here that are good but the main three had this movie on their backs. Having a premise of a robber who takes hostage a couple and he gets more than he bargains for is just genius. This movie uses that concept so well and even leaves plenty of room for dark humor to take over. I laughed when they did and I was upset when they were. Please dont let The Ref go unwatched. This movie is the definition of a early Christmas present. Thank me later. First Watches in 2023 Ranked Favorite Performances from Actors and Actresses

We finally decorated so it was time for a Christmas favorite. One of the better dark Christmas comedies of the 90s/00s (and Ted Demme’s best movie, period). Dennis Leary brings the disaffected, snarky ‘get with the 90s’ energy you’d expect, which plays well off Judy Davis and Christine Baranski as dueling wasp in-laws/dissatisfied wives. JK Simons and a drunk Santa also show up to keep things chaotic fans moving quick enough to forget that Kevin Spacey is even there at all 🤷🎅🏼

Fuck you, that’s my name. -Gus A Christmas family favorite. The late Ted Demme, who directed Denis Leary’s comedy special No Cure for Cancer, reunites with the chain smoker for this star vehicle. It’s really appropriate since Leary’s character, Gus, is basically a slightly tuned down version of his stand-up persona, but there is still plenty of “fucks” coming from Leary while he lights up yet another cigarette and basically looses his shit at every turn as nothing goes his way. I, and certain members of my family, might enjoy the film so much because it’s a bit of wish fulfillment. To spend Christmas with your dysfunctional family and be able to finally tell some of them to shut the…

Kevin Spacey really went out and confessed his crimes on 93 and we didn’t even realize it. So let’s get this out of the way and address the elephant in the room: everyone in this movie is a bunch of insufferable c**ts. Like this kind of person, even Satan begs God not to send him to hell. And to everyone’s credit, they all deliver this perfectly while maintaining this great dark comedic timing, especially Leary and Davis. Ironically, Spacey gets to play a much more submissive role, though he still manages to let out some of that sarcastic, prickly nature we will eventually learn is him being himself. The writing is devilishly good and surprisingly quotable, like the whole ‘hijink…

Mary: Maybe they’ll catch him and let him go in the spirit of Christmas. Connie: That is not the spirit of Christmas. The spirit of Christmas is either you’re good or you’re punished and you burn in hell. Christmas in July watch. Hands down, still my favorite Christmas movie. Lloyd: Mother. Rose: What? Lloyd: Is it possible for you to shut the fuck up for ten seconds?

It’s a great concept and I liked all the characters, but the script needs to be a notch or two funnier, maybe by swapping out a few of the “wouldn’t it be hilarious if you told your annoying wife / sister-in-law / mother to STFU” moments.

I wanted to dislike this movie purely based on Kevin Spacey being a twat. But if it is possible for you to shut the fuck up for 10 seconds you might find it’s actually pretty good.

Laddie winner 1994 and one of the most quoted films in our household… House burglar Gus (Dennis Leary) unwittingly stumbles into the lives of suburban Connecticut bickerson couple Lloyd (Kevin Spacey) and Caroline (Judy Davis) Chasseur, who are ready to drop the verbal gloves at the slightest provocation. As they spend an evening together during the Christmas holidays with family and police dropping in at every turn to keep things on edge, some real emotional breakthroughs occur in this sharply written *dark* comedy about the importance of communication and remembering why we fell in love in the first place.

This one was mixed in my watching. First, some parts were GREAT! Denis Leary’s performance was wonderful and he had a wonderful edge to him akin to a white Eddie Murphy (for example.) Kevin Spacey and Judy Davis were also good as Leary’s targets. Second, there were some average moments too. The “least good” was the christmas dinner scene because I feel it interrupted from the overall crime comedy nature of this film. And OH YA, I almost forgot… THIS…

I always enjoyed these type of comedies. Not outburst of laughter funny but has some quirky dialogue and great character development. It’s kind of shocking we don’t see Dennis Leary more these days. He’s great.

Very fun and, depending what kind of family you come from, potentially VERY Christmassy. Leary is so good and the script is very witty.

I watch this almost every Christmas. I think it’s hilarious, the other title for this film is “Hostile Hostages” which I consider a better moniker. Dennis Leary brilliantly plays the jewellery robber holding an entirely dysfunctional family hostage.

Under appreciated nasty Christmas film. Hard to believe you’d find a film where Dennis Leary isn’t the least likeable character, but Kevin Space and Judy Davis easily beat him out in nastiness. It did make me laugh.
