Firstly, I’ve never a seen a film with as much peeking as the first 10 minutes of this film. Secondly, David Kross was the real star, better than Winslet, whose career award was very deserved though. The most interesting way to interpret this… Michael is a victim of abuse. His emotional development stops at 15. He’s incapable of forming healthy relationships because of his childhood experiences that he has falsely classified as love. Hanna is a monster, partly responsible for the distant relationships of Michael’s future. Michael only gets some true redemption when he finally opens up about his adolescent experiences to his daughter.

It doesn’t matter what I feel. It doesn’t matter what I think. The dead are still dead. – Very well storyline. – Beautiful Cinematography. – Good directing. – Emotional ending. – Reading then sex. – Story tape. – Beautiful chemistry between Kate Winslet and David Kross. – Kate Winslet is the most beautiful and outstanding. She really diserves an Oscar. – Naked Kate Winslet. – Completely naked David Kross. – 20s Ralph Fiennes. And yeah my Voldemort still looks hot. Secret ?

The Reader is confused. At its heart is the relationship between Michael, a teenager, and Hanna, an older woman. Years after their initial affair, he is a law student and attends a trial that holds her accountable for her past as a Nazi prison guard. He realizes that she’s keeping a secret to the detriment of her freedom and doesn’t intervene. They reconnect when she’s in prison, partly; he sends her recordings of him reading books but doesn’t answer her letters. It’s never clear what The Reader is trying to achieve. Hanna is illiterate, and Michael feels responsible for her. Guilt and shame run deep, but everything is kept at surface-level. Michael’s feelings towards Hanna are explored through sighs and…

I don’t know dude, don’t even want to rate this to be honest. Watched it because I wanted to see something by this director that wasn’t the Tom Hanks 9/11 Movie so instead I opted for the Kate Winslet Holocaust Movie. It’s good on some registers: Winslet’s performance is impressive and I appreciate the themes (Germany grappling with shame, legal and moral guilt, negotiating historical/political narrative in the public) but it also kind of made my skin crawl from beginning…

“She had done much worse to other people.” Thank God I was home alone watching this otherwise people would’ve heard me scream Fuck You at that line. Nothing in this world will ever make me feel sympathy for a Nazi groomer just because she can’t read or write. The only contribution to Hollywood this movie has to offer is that its inclusion in the Best Picture lineup of 2008, over modern classics like WALL-E and The Dark Knight, prompted the Academy to expand its lineup beyond just five films. Terrible book. Terrible movie.

I had always wanted to watch this movie, as it finally won Kate Winslet an Oscar on her 6th nomination. But boy I don’t know how to feel about this. To be clear: this movie is an adaptation of a book. So if this is the plot of the book, it’s not the director or screenwriter’s fault. But as a viewer I don’t know what we are supposed to do with a main character who thought illiteracy was more shameful…

The Reader is a film that very tactfully deals with extremely delicate and uncomfortable subject matter. I mean, this is about a teenage boy who has an affair with an older woman, then discovers she had been a guard at Auschwitz, and we’re meant to feel some level of sympathy for that woman! This could have been a fucking disaster, but it manages the awkward tightrope walk quite well. Ralph Fiennes doesn’t have much of a presence in this until…

I don’t know how to feel after watching this film. It makes me sit in between the feeling of sadness for Hanna, knowing that she is wrong, and yet the film keeps asking a harder question underneath that: is it even possible to know how to love or forgive someone who has done something monstrous? It is true that a society doesn’t run on morality; it runs on laws, but laws are blunt. They can only judge what can be…

A gorgeous film, beautifully portrayed by Fiennes, Winslet and Kross. Near the end, it made me cringe to witness the hypocritical indignation of “the girl who survived the fire”. She and her family lived in Israel, otherwise known as occupied Palestine. It remains shocking to me that many people around the world fail to see the parallel between the Holocaust and the genocide that has been happening in the Middle East, specifically Palestine, for nearly 100 years.

Kate Winslet stars alongside Ralph Fiennes and David Kross in this drama set in post war Germany. A chance encounter between Winslet and Kross leads to a forbidden relationship but then abruptly halted when past wartime crimes are leveled against Winslet. Great performances from the leads and a moral dilemma. Really good film.

I was a little bit aware of what this movie is kind of about, both because it was a Best Picture nominee and basically the reason why the Dark Knight wasn’t nominated for Best Picture because of it (the power of the Weinsteins for ya), and also for the revelation that Kate Winslet was a Nazi in the middle of the film. An interesting movie that I think confuses people… I don’t think it romanticizes Nazism or pedophilia or abuse, and Hanna is clearly guilty of those things. It’s a movie that is interested in how people continue to live after doing monstrous things and having monstrous things done to them— and how does that color our lives? I think it being packaged in a slick Hollywood veneer rather than a tedious arthouse posture makes people think it’s attempting to absolve or…

This really puts the hollow in holocaust The Reader poses the question, “how many times do you have to show someone raping a child to create sympathy for her once it’s revealed she’s a pedophilic genocidaire who’s “unfairly” forced to go to jail for life just for murdering a bunch of people?” These rapes are the first 45 minutes of the movie, and they portray it from a sympathetic middle distance so it’s neither experiential or objectively distanced. It’s trying for Harry Dean Stanton in Paris Texas but ends up with James Woods in Casino.

Storia erotica dall’esplosiva presenza drammatica.

It really wanted to be a less disturbing version of “The Night Porter” (1974) but for the Oscar loving crowd. Kate Winslet is an emotional abuser in this, not only that but also a Nazi. I think I understand part of what the film is trying to do, but I think the way it goes about it is completely wrong. I think there’s ideas here about historical literacy and making sure people don’t forget about events like the Holocaust. I don’t think I’ve ever felt more connected to a movie in recent memory than this masterpiece. My first girlfriend made me feel a similar way when she moved away and that happened in the teenage years, and that sense of a hole inside me has lasted for over the years, foregoing the Nazi trials and whatnot. Alright, this one resonated with me not because of its controversial romance, but because beneath the forbidden affair lies a touching story about the life-changing gift of literacy. The powerful metaphor is that Hannah spends her life being judged before she can ever truly read, making Michael’s greatest gift not their…

Filme bem complexo.

There’s a strange aftertaste to this film. It was somehow both enjoyable and uncomfortable, probably because the message seems so muddled. It feels pretty hard to gauge the filmmakers’ intentions here. I suppose it asks an interesting question about how closely tied literacy, humanity, and morality are, but in a way that comes just a little too close to excusing some serious atrocities…or maybe it doesn’t do that? A strangely enjoyable mixed bag.

A nice-looking movie, and yet however … This one combines two of Hollywood’s go-to favorites for audience arousal: soft-porn fantasies centered around very young men’s desires, and Holocaust-guilt plus existential questions about it. The questions are, unfortunately posed at a middle-school level, a “how could this happen level?” that has been done ad-infinitum at this point in movie/Hollywood history. Those questions arouse — ahem, arise, ahem — after the 50-minute mark, when the trials begin. The movie has (IIRC) three…

deakins don’t miss! The score and the central dilemma carry so much weight that it’s easy to overlook how much the film meanders at times. winslet is undeniably good, but i was definitely more taken with david kross, whose performance made the emotional core feel real. fiennes is ok. But i never fully bought him as the older version of kross (ig he has those sharp eyes). 8/10

Wow…this movie takes you on such an emotional roller coaster. I’m not rating this 5 stars because I think it’s a masterpiece, but rather because of the emotion it evoked in me.

One of the advantages of stumbling across a movie many years after it is made is that it is no longer in the public consciousness. You stand a very good chance of being able to approach it completely cold, with no prior information about what it might contain. All the more pity, then, when the idiots who program the little blurb that shows up on the streaming page (and which your eyes might happen to just glance over inadvertently) completely…

Minor spoilers. Some stories don’t need endless twists to leave a permanent mark. The Reader unfolds through quiet shifts in time, allowing every silence and every glance to carry the weight of what remains unspoken. Michael’s relationship with Hanna is unsettling, tragic, and painfully human. Everything begins to unravel after Hanna is offered a promotion, forcing her greatest secret into the light. More than anything, I found myself grieving the shame she carried over her illiteracy. It became a prison…

Still pretty good, but not as good as I remembered. I didn’t realise that the courtroom and prison scenes took up about three quarters of the film.

No es mi novia, es mi mamá. ¿O cómo era?
- Synopsis
- The story of Michael Berg, a German lawyer who, as a teenager in the late 1950s, had an affair with an older woman, Hanna, who then disappeared only to resurface years later as one of the defendants in a war crimes trial stemming from her actions as a concentration camp guard late in the war. He alone realizes that Hanna is illiterate and may be concealing that fact at the expense of her freedom.
