“Si vis pacem, para bellum – If you want peace, prepare for war.” I haven’t seen this film in at least ten years and was pleasantly surprised how decent it was. Thomas Jane embodies the spirit of Frank Castle and watching him go toe to toe with an over the top John Travolta is worth the watch alone. And speaking of Travolta he gets a Mortal Kombat fatality in this one. They used to play this film to death on TV and it was an absolute couch magnet. Would always just watch whatever part it was at. But was always sure to never miss the hand to hand brawl with the Russian. What a stand out scene that still is.…

this movie is crazy horny for thomas jane’s bod, but it doesn’t want anyone to think it’s gay so it threw in some sexy ladies and violence against women and a plot point about the bad guy being one of those evil dirty homosexuals to try and fool us – so basically it’s exactly the same as every other badass tough guy movie

Tonight was my first time seeing this movie, and I really enjoyed it. My wife saw this back when it came out, and she recommended that we watch it tonight. We both love MCU movies for the most part. And this is one of those rare ones that she saw, and I haven’t. I know this isn’t technically part of the mcu…but now with the multiverse, anything is possible 😂 This movie isn’t great, but it’s very entertaining, and that does matter. I don’t think I’ve really seen the main actors, Thomas Jane, in anything else really. I’m sure it’s happened, but nothing I remember. He makes a damn good Punisher though. Totally bought it all movie. Reminds me a…

“God’s gonna sit this one out.” I chose this film as my introduction to The Punisher. Visually, I love how the film looks moody, with almost noir-like aesthetic. The gritty urban settings and shadowy cinematography help create an atmosphere of despair and isolation that aligns with Frank Castle’s journey. I found the pacing ocassionally lags though and I think they could have cut some scenes to make the duration a bit shorter. Additionally, I was expecting to watch more brutal and relentless fight scenes. He’s undoubtedly smart but apparently The Punisher they portrayed here still seems too soft for a man with vengeance. Or is he? I don’t read the comic so I can’t say much about the accuracy. Thomas…

Obsessed with John Travolta’s utter lack of human emotions in this.

It’s a weird move to make an origin story that’s also an adaptation of a storyline about the character’s return after a long absence. (The miniseries is literally titled “Welcome Back, Frank.”) The best material comes from that book, with its sardonic wit and comically gruesome violence. But the movie needed a villain that matched that tone, not John Travolta and his jealous, humorless crime boss. I haven’t seen this Punisher since it came out and remembered almost none of it, except Travolta barking “It’s your duty… to make Castle dead!” For some reason, that one stayed with me.

The Punisher is better than at least 50% of the films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I’m very surprised that this isn’t really well received. This film is brutal, intense, and full of action. Marvel should go back to this style. Don’t get me wrong; I enjoy most of the films in the MCU. But as I’ve said before I prefer dark and brutal comic book films to fun and silly ones.

Whenever this movie focuses on doing old west style violence, it’s pretty great. Whenever it tries to focus on story or character, it’s a bit more difficult to swallow. Anyway “Dirty Laundry” needs a Letterboxd page.

Tries to be a dark and grim superhero movie, but there are times where the scenes are just so ridiculous (like the scene with The Russian, for example), that it immediately takes you out of that setting. If it weren’t for the opening credits where the Marvel logo appeared, I also wouldn’t classify this as a superhero movie. The Punisher feels a bit long at times, and John Travolta is an awful mob boss, but I do think Thomas Jane is pretty good as The Punisher, although I do prefer Jon Bernthal.

It wasn’t bad, but the cuts were awful. I felt I was watching it on TV and waiting for the commercials.

“It may not be the typical action-packed Punisher movie, but I still enjoyed it. Thomas Jane delivers an outstanding performance and is easily the film’s biggest strength.”
