The Civil War is the American Iliad, and this movie is Clint’s Aeneid, where a defeated hero flees the ruins of his Troy to found a new Rome in Texas. I think the key to this movie is in the scene early on where the guy who runs a ferry, sings Dixie going one way across a river, and the Battle Hymn of the Republic going back the other way, or the old biddy from Kansas–“I’m a Jaybird!”–who hates everyone from Missouri because they’re all cutthroats and thieves, and when the dry goods store owner tells her he understands because he’s a Hoosier, she says “I don’t think much of Hoosiers either.” Like all his films, Clint depicts an essentially…

The Outlaw Josey Wales is directed by Clint Eastwood, who also stars as Wales, and is adapted by Sonia Chernus & Phil Kaufman from the novel “The Rebel Outlaw: Josey Wales” written by Forrest Carter. Joining Eastwood in the cast are Chief Dan George, Sondra Locke, Bill McKinney, John Vernon & Paula Trueman. Music is by Jerry Fielding and Bruce Surtees photographs on location in Utah, Arizona & Wyoming. We are at the very end of the American Civil War and Josey Wales is a contented family man working on his Missouri farm. But his peaceful world is shattered when Union soldiers raid his home and murder his wife and child. Surviving the attack, Josey takes up arms with a group of Confederate…

Deeply flawed in some ways, perhaps as a reflection of Eastwood’s own uncertainty over subverting his screen persona, but still ultimately a very beautiful film. Probably Eastwood’s most overtly Ford-inspired work; the film constantly nods towards Stagecoach & The Searchers, this is a film about transformation, about reconciling ones self with the cruelty of the universe. “Seems like we can’t trust the white man,” says Josey early on in the film. This line signifies both his complete disassociation with the “civilized world,” and the beginning of the birth of a new family. One of the most beautiful scenes in Eastwood is the moment where this group of outcasts at last finds the ranch house they’ve been looking for, bathed in the…

“There ain’t no forgetting.” vs. “The war’s over.” Coming to terms with past trauma; vengeance vs. absolution. This is definitely a weird thing to say about a movie in which a cold-blooded killer strikes up a relationship with a young woman whom he saves from being raped, but I think The Outlaw Josey Wales might be the most tender revisionist western I’ve seen. If the central thesis of the revisionist western is that manifest destiny wasn’t all it was cracked up to be—that the supposedly benevolent civilizing influence saving North America from the savagery of the western frontier was itself just as savage, if not more so—The Outlaw Josey Wales takes back this undermining of traditional social values by showing…

“The Outlaw Josey Whales” sees director Clint Eastwood cast himself as the gruff and vengeful dad for the lost boys of the West. “Josey’s” plot setup is something like a “Mad Max: Fury Road” of the frontier. A father watches his entire family murdered before his eyes, and so sets off on a solitary voyage of vengeance. In both films … it doesn’t stay solitary for long. Continuing a theme seen in “High Plains Drifter,” Eastwood casts his own machismo in service of the downtrodden and deprived. “Drifter” saw a more bitter and biting Stranger who elevated a bathhouse-worker dwarf to the position of sheriff. In “Josey,” Eastwood’s named (!) protagonist takes in: an exiled Cherokee, a trafficked Navajo, and…

“I reckon so…” A Southern farmer’s wife and son are murdered and his home burned by Northern soldiers during the outbreak of the American Civil War. With nothing left to live for, he takes up arms in a doomed cause against those who took everything from him. When finally faced with the war’s inevitable conclusion, he holds out as the rest of his unit surrenders; an act that spares him from being massacred with his bushwhacking comrades. And this is where the story begins… The story behind the story begins with Phillip Kaufman (The Right Stuff, Raiders of the Lost Ark), who co-wrote the screenplay and was meant to direct. But legendary friction between director and star (involving not just…

a cowboy conan the barbarian filtered through eastwood’s libertarian individualist ethos. fuck the system, fuck the man, you can only trust a man’s word and his pistol. typically-stellar photography by bruce surtress, dappled shadows stretching wide across every bit of the frontier. people trying to give each other life, instead of death; a lone gunfighter forging a community of misfits, finding forgiveness.

The Outlaw Josey Wales wasn’t Eastwood’s first great movie as a director, but it was clearly a leap of ambition. It was made for the American bicentennial and loaded with Fordian images and a clear desire to serve as state of fractured nation address. It is taken by notions of death and renewal, with a strong desire for rebirth of community haunted by foundational retribution. It is in some ways New Hollywood’s Wagonmaster, but the amiable cowboys get replaced by a very standard Eastwood’s avenging ghost. It is probably worth pointing out that it is based on a novel by a hardcore southern segrationist and adapted for the screen by a Hollywood liberal, which probably accounts for the politics here…

Josey Wales is a farmer in rural Missouri during the American Civil War turned outlaw vigilante after pro-Union paramilitants (referred to as “Redlegs”) burn down his farm and murder his wife and son. Despite the fact this film is written from the perspective of someone positioned against the Union during the American Civil War and by someone who ran on a far-right, staunchly segregationist ticket for governor of Alabama (Forest/Asa Carter), the film’s main themes are tolerance and closure. Wales’s…

The Outlaw Josey Wales is more than just a western, it’s a late stage genre defining classic. It’s also a film about the effects of PTSD, about family and also about revenge. This is a blood soaked, heat drenched feast for the eyes. The photography by Bruce Surtees is gorgeous; so many picturesque scenes. I can see it now, “Many animals were harmed during the making of this film.” As a revenge movie, the quest is too repetitive and stiff, the villains too boring to be hateable, and the fights too dull to be memorable. I wish the found family stuff got introduced earlier because those character dynamics were the absolute most interesting stuff in the film. There’s certainly a thread of anti-government individualism here that’s interesting, especially in how it’s tied to the Native American struggle. Would have like to see Josey’s relationship with the Chief be more compelling than him rambling incessantly though.

I had already noticed how much of Once Upon a Time in the West was in Back to the Future Part III but I never realized how much visually was cribbed from this one, especially once Josey gets to the town. I wasn’t totally into the plot but I did think it picked up after he arrives in town. I noticed the cutting was really choppy and distracting. I liked the ending. Best 🪜 connection: Unforgiven

I honestly had to re-focus myself at some point because it was not doing it on its own, but once I did adjust and locked in, I enjoyed it quite a bit. A pure piece of old Hollywood wish fulfilment in the clothes of a New Hollywood revisionist western. More like episodes from a tv show than a movie to be honest, and feels pretty close to a Tarantino parody in places. But there are some fun lines, and Clint is a real movie star all right. Very old-school attitudes to the Confederacy and Mexicans. Oddly progressive when it comes to Native Americans.

Steeped in Lost Cause shit but beyond that feels thematically and emotionally empty. The Union is the only group in this film (outside of the Comanche) that has any substantial beliefs beyond “Just let me live,” and yet everyone outside Wales’ posse is some scoundrel that just wants to steal and kill. The film doesn’t want to engage with the Confederacy at all, so all you’re left with is that sort of vague unsatisfactory libertarian line. Wales’ is barely a…

The Outlaw Josey Wales is Eastwood at, or at least near, his best, both as an actor and director. I thought that this would be a pretty straightforward revenge tale after that brutal opening sequence, but instead, Clint portrays his titular gunslinger as a man who just wants to be alone after losing everything. Yes, we still get the gunfights and blood, but that’s not really the focus of this movie. Instead, we see Wales escaping deadly situations, picking up stragglers…

“Sometimes trouble just follows a man…” A Clint Eastwood Western with a sublime natural beauty in the harshest of landscapes. Josey Wales isn’t a hero or a villain, he’s just a man who wants a simple life, to escape the endless violence that automatically appears in this western world. Some of the coolest gunfire with Josey Wales’ twin colts. Eastwood’s direction is simply incredible as always. Godly cinematography – which I didn’t expect. Was beginning to question why I liked this film so much, but that final act is near perfect. Clint Eastwood should have stuck to aura farming in his movies instead of being racist.

that poor native american woman got beat up more than josey wales 😭 so did the dog he spat on it every time it was in shot interesting choice to portray the confederates in a fairly generous light (and in turn the unionists as villainous). i understand that to make a more personal and reflective story it’s best to make the confederates motivations in turn more personal and family orientated, but it seems a bit disingenuous to omit slavery entirely when, let’s be honest, that’s what they were fighting over great directing and acting by clint eastwood, definitely up there as one of his best

One Clint Eastwood’s all-time best entries to the Western genre, what makes this film so special and poignant is that it has plenty of real heart and humor to go along with all the expected promised action and violence. While Missouri farmer Josey Wales loses his wife and child to some brutal marauding Union soldiers, he fortunately attracts a motley assortment of lovely and endearing oddballs and misfits who wind up becoming a ragtag surrogate family for Wales who replace…

This film is absolutely amazing, and honestly, it’s the most underrated film I’ve ever seen. At first, I thought Eastwood or Wells’ character was calm, unlike his other films, but as I finished the movie, I realized I was wrong. This film is filled with indescribable emotions.

A lot of talk about aspect ratios these days, with THE ODYSSEY’s overwhelming IMAX presentation intended to expand beyond the viewer’s field of vision, but also in a literal sense a narrower or squarer frame (1.43:1). To what extent that necessitates compromises in order to work in other formats is a question for another day, but I was struck watching this how the wide-wide screen Panavision (2.39:1) creates such sharply delineated space for blocking and for things to appear from…

Someday I’ll read Asa “Forrest” Carter’s original story of this; despite the Lost Cause mythology clearly ingrained deep in the story, Eastwood manages to make this much more about an angry, grief-stricken man finally accepting family and society again….while shooting as many people as possible.

I’ve always heard quite a bit about Josey Wales over the years yet i’ve never actually seen it despite seeing a bunch of other Eastwoods classics over the years. But i’ve gotta say it really is a great film. It manages to both have some pretty dark moments while also having some great comedy and even heartfelt scenes across the film that worked well for the film, the opening when Eastwoods family is murdered and we see him burying them and…

Only Joesy Wales can spit out tobacco like that! Now this is an absolutely iconic Western, and I loved it so much. Instead of Clint Eastwood’s usual man with no name approach, this guy has a name, and the title of the film tells you. Despite the fact this scrapes a little over two hours, it has the lushness of a three hour epic. Of course there’s that one infamous scene which was given a PG for some baffling reason.…

This, I believe is the first collaboration with sondra Locke. Did they do 6 or 7 together? Anyway it ended in tears. The movie is class. Clint directs this and what you get is a good movie. Clint is a classy director. He been in some crap films, but when he gets it right you get the outlaw Jose’s wales. Love it You gonna pull those pistols or whistle Dixie.

A person is a contradiction. Stack them together, things get complicated. Hold each one together with the other—bind them. Is the result truth? Bind them. This is law. Here is government, a sought after sublation. Or meet eye to eye. “I bring life and death”. We deal in the seasons: You and I. This is ritual. Here we let the contradictions play out. Eastwood is content to put himself on show. This is infinitely refreshing. But it sounds strange. He…

Really great western with a heartfelt story. The supporting cast is really fun and all put in good performances. Love the conversations between Josey and the kid early on in the film, later on he collects a bigger group of followers that are all very colorful, great stuff between Josey and his Indian friend, granny, and Laura especially. Really good action throughout but the best scene is the peace treaty between Josey and the Comanche, great conversation between the two…

One of the more reactionary entries in Clint’s canon, similar to Dirty Harry in how it manifests the ugliest parts of the American consciousness. It’s based on a novel written by a KKK leader posing as a Native American, and while his real identity had not been uncovered at the time Malpaso adapted his work, it doesn’t take much sleuthing to notice the story’s Confederate propaganda. The movie begins with bad omens—hoof-thunder and black smoke—and then moves into cycles of…

Ending is a bit shady in my head cause I had too much rhum. But it’s still very solid. Looks amazing, the slow process of redemption is greatly tackled and the action is solid. Plus it’s often quite funny. Not as memorable as Unforgiven but a strong movie anyway.

Erm what a masterpiece. I don’t know much about the American Civil war so discovering through this film the “Redlegs” and “Bushwhackers” was fascinating. Through my own ignorance I thought it was just “confederate” vs “Yankee.” That in combination with his Josey’s extended cast mainly his Native American friend “Lone Waite” is incredible in his role. The film just feels so ahead of its time talking about the west and the many factions. Everyone is incredible in this film. Lastly this new 4K transfer makes the film look incredible. This might be the best looking film of the 70’s I’ve seen in 4K in recent memory.

This is one of the best scripts that Eastwood ever directed and one of the great revenge films. Making the hero a very flawed, ex-Confederate soldier is an interesting choice (let’s ignore the controversial author of the novel this script is based on). The anti-government sentiment is strong. I hadn’t seen this since I was young, so I only remembered pieces of it. I didn’t appreciate Wales constantly spitting on the dog (if you grew up around people chewing tobacco you already have nightmares about spittoons and spit cups). The 4K disc looks great. 4/5

Clint has listed this as one of his personal favorite directorial works & I can see why, but what I find odd is it’s based in Missouri, is the South really claiming Missouri? I would’ve never guessed, but either way, this film looks a little more polished than a traditional western & I loved the storyline. It’s also interesting to me to see how nice they treated the Natives which is usually the opposite in other films. The scenes with Chief Dan George were very cool, & John Vernon’s character gave me Paul Dano vibes.

Some really timeless filmmaking at work here. Clint Eastwood takes what he learned from his time acting in Italy with the hammy quotable hero swag and over the top violence but adds in a brutal post classical story about america screwing over its people following the civil war. I heard there’s three kinds of suns in kansas: sunshine, sunflowers and sons of bitches

Both of us had Clint Eastwood on our list. So today when I had some free time just had to put on one of his best. This is Eastwood’s best western. Hands down. The 4k disc brings it to even bigger heights.

★ ★/★ ★ ★ ★ ★

“He’ll have to run now, and hell is running with him.” “Personally, I don’t think much of Hoosiers neither.” An allegory about Vietnam War vets, disguised as a Civil War Western. Another really just ANGRY 1976 film. The opening is absolutely brutal and hard to stomach. Clint is so perfect in this. There are weird, unexpected bits of humor in this film, between just the sheer vengeance and blood lust. The “found family” Josey discovers along his quest is really, really great and so well plotted out. Movie Ladder Suggestion: The Searchers

To say that praise of the Confederacy is subtext in The Outlaw Josie Wales is like saying praise for the KKK is subtext in Birth of the Nation. But I still really liked this film. See, for me, the point of this film isn’t in glorifying the exploits of the South and even praising their actions (particularly in comparison to the weak and effete Northerners in this film). The point of the film lies in Josie Wales’s slow growth into…

~ Do you really think you can shoot ALL those men down before they shoot you? No, no Mr. Josey Wales. There is such a thing in this country called JUSTICE. ~ Well, Mr. Carpetbagger, we got something in this territory, called a Missoura boat-ride. While I personally love his first film as a director the most (High Plains Drifter), The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976) , really does feel like less an homage to Leone, and more like Clint finally finding his voice as a director. This feels like a thematic trilogy, with Pale Rider (1985) and Unforgiven (1992).

Eastwood at his finest. Modern films won’t touch a story of this moral complexity without burying it in historical anachronisms and modern sensibilities. Uncompromising in its portrayal of characters who act out of necessity, revenge, justice, and the need for companionship and common purpose…even with those who once fought on the side of their enemies…and maybe still do.

I hate being an anti-joy wokescold (just kidding, it’s so much fun) but the popularity of Confederate heroes in Westerns has always irked me. The Outlaw Josey Wales doesn’t explicitly take up the cause of the CSA, but it does feature a bad-ass Rebel gunfighter who heroically refuses to bend the knee to Uncle Sam and a comically evil group of Jayhawkers terrorizing the countryside. Thankfully, beyond this Southern fried premise, Eastwood’s film is more concerned with the effect of…

Clint Eastwood’s “The Outlaw Josey Wales” is a strange and daring Western that brings together two of the genre’s usually incompatible story lines. On the one hand, it’s about a loner, a man of action and few words, who turns his back on civilization and lights out for the Indian nations. On the other hand, it’s about a group of people heading West who meet along the trail and cast their destinies together. What happens next is supposed to be…
