A medium-scale thriller whose wire-tight beginning and end make up for a saggy middle, “The November Man” finds Pierce Brosnan’s ex-CIA assassin working to settle old scores. The story engine crackles with double-crosses and geopolitical intrigue, and, while its twists and turns do not always feel fresh, the narrative packs sufficient punch. Roger Donaldson’s direction ensures the film’s audience stays engaged through even the most token stretches, and Brosnan glowers through the work with a haunted and investable presence. The experience is solid.

I think I would have enjoyed this movie a lot more if I’d read it on an airplane.

“Know what we used to call you Peter? The November Man. Cause after you passed through, nothing lived.” Experiencing November Man felt like simply passing through and not feeling anything. I definitely didn’t get any sense of enjoyment from Roger Donaldons’s (Species, The Bank Job, The Recruit) latest film. The only thing it has going for it is getting to see Pierce Brosnan as a spy agent once again, although Peter Devereaux is a somewhat more serious character than James Bond was. It tries to portray him as a much darker character, but I didn’t feel that way about him either. For a film that is trying to separate itself from the classic spy action thrillers it ends up relying…

Roger Donaldson directs Pierce Brosnan in a perfectly watchable and enjoyable spy thriller. Brosnan is a veteran CIA agent who is seen at the beginning working with a new agent (Luke Bracey) and the assignment doesn’t go as planned. Flash forward, years later, a retired Brosnan is called back to duty by his handler (Bill Smitrovich) and he finds that the agent that was once under him is now gunning for him. Multiple twists keep this film interesting. Brosnan is quite good even if the movie doesn’t always do him justice. Audiences will be able to see at least one twist coming from a mile away and although the film is rote and predictable at times, it is never a bad film. The cast is more than capable and the direction is crisp especially in the action sequences. THE NOVEMBER MAN is the perfect definition of an o.k. film

Purely as a cheap, low-effort entertainment, The November Man mostly does the job as it’s a moderately fun espionage action thriller whose chief strength is in having Pierce Brosnan basically reprising his Bond role. Even in his sixties by this point, Brosnan is a dependable lead who does his best to sell a potboiler story that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense and is very derivative of other, better thrillers. The plotting here certainly isn’t very original or effective, but it helps that The November Man moves swiftly and has a steady hand like Roger Donaldson who makes the most of the low budget (I imagine he was able to stretch it by shooting almost entirely in Eastern Europe) with some efficient action sequences.

The easiest three stars ever for providing me with exactly what I wanted to see ever since they hit the reset on Bond after Die Another Day: Pierce Brosnan returning to the spy genre and starring in his very own R-rated intelligence agent action-thriller. Bloody, entertaining, and very violent! Roger Donaldson delivers us the espionage goods! 🧒🩸🥷🩸💥🔫👱🧑🏻🇷🇺🧑🏻📱🖐👩🏻🩸💥🔫👱📲📸👨✈️🪖🗡👧🏻💄👠🩸👨✈️💥🔫🔭

With Brosnan into his 60s by the point of this film, I was almost expecting a DTV-esque geezer teaser with a film riding on the knowledge of his name, but to its credit, The November Man puts Brosnan as a pretty clear protagonist and whilst he may not be at the center of all the action he does a solid job with some rugged charm. As for the film built around him, it’s not exactly bad but it’s splashing around in some pretty generic spy-movie tropes. The biggest problem here is probably that the central relationship is so weak; the core idea of an older mentor facing off against his former disciple isn’t bad but the film never manages to…

Directed by Roger Donaldson, 2014’s The November Man is an enjoyable if middling entry in the action/espionage genre. The casting of Pierce Brosnan in the lead role was a wise decision, as he fits the role of the seasoned spy quite well. Alongside Brosnan is Olga Kurylenko, possibly the best actor or actress in the film, who delivered an exceptional performance as the sort of lynchpin to the whole narrative. Beyond the pair’s good performances, the project unfortunately doesn’t have a lot going for it. If one were to watch this as their first spy/action film, they may have another takeaway, but for any seasoned viewer, the constant tropes and clichés are quite difficult to look past. The November Man…

Pierce “ain’t no Bond anymore” Brosnan in good yarn, having a classy drink while battering some skulls with his pistol – still works! Pierce “ain’t your father, son” Brosnan, starting to get drunk while firing in all directions – okay sure, why not? Pierce “losing his grip” Brosnan, being pretty shitfaced while shouting at random people – go home man, sleep it off and tomorrow go see a doctor for your inebriety…

First rate espionage thriller. well-acted, photographed, scored, edited and directed. Plus the best role for Olga Kurylenko I’ve seed yet (and the best dress too!) highly recommended!

To those who expect this will satisfy those Brosnan-Bond continuation copium, you might be disappointed. Because it’s not it. The cast are superb, but the screenplay is just way too messy! Everyone here makes a mistake, whether they realize it or not. Also, it’s surprising for me to learn that Doctor Amelia Shepherd is among the cast of this movie.

Short Review: Brosnan is solid and about the only thing keeping this afloat, with almost everything else being stuff you have seen elsewhere before. Long Review (Spoilers): I am now at a point where I have essentially seen this movie like fifty times before without literally having seen it at all, if you catch my drift. This was formulaic as hell is what I’m saying, you just have someone in the lead role doing everything the story requires them to…

Going back to Pierce Brosnan for a quick sec, I once watched this picture on a plane. I mean the guy can be anywhere. And there he was, right on the screen. He was miniature, of course, but I knew it was him. I frantically pushed the button, calling the flight attendant over. Had the pilots not seen it? I needed to warn everybody. “There’s a November Man on the screen” I quivered, tugging at her lapels. But it was…

I had never heard, nor seen anything about “The November Man” until I stumbled upon it in a used disc shop a couple of days ago. Since I’m a huge fan of Brosnan’s James Bond movies, and also since this is a spy-type of movie, I thought I’d give it a go. By and large, it’s a typical spy thriller where there are a lot of curveballs thrown at the audience, but given that I’m not usually good at picking…

Pierce Brosnan is doing good here, but the plot gets needlessly complicated. Not helped by several cases where the editing jumps around.

Solid Pierce Brose’ action film. Great pace and editing but still leaves you with the question. How can this old guy still do this? This armed ex-agent that seems unstoppable with all the answers. But i guess that’s what makes this movie fun. Good daytime action flick.

Starts really strongly and lulls you into a film that after about 15-20 minutes loses the run of itself completely. The plot is convoluted, there’s far too many plots and moving parts and at one point I fully forgot about this Russian presidential candidate who’s supposed to be the big bad. Brosnan kinda makes this, not really on acting skill I just think he provides enough entertainment to make it watchable, this movie would be so much worse without him…

It starts off strong enough and it’s great to see Brosnan (the best James Bond) back in action. But The November Man is held back by an overly convoluted narrative, lackluster action and a disappointingly rushed climax.

a typical spy thriller. it had elements to be more than that but failed to be so at execution. they tried really hard it to make devereaux vs mason; their anger towards each other. but it wasnt well portrayed. it was obvious from the beginning mason’s gonna help devereaux.

You can skip this movie. Five years into his retirement, CIA veteran Peter Devereaux played by Pierce Brosnan is pulled back into service to help retrieve a Russian agent and his former lover from an undercover assignment that produced incriminating evidence on Federov, a corrupt Russian leader. When a different CIA team, led by Devereaux’s former protégé played by Luke Bracey, shows up, the mission goes south and Devereaux’s ex-lover is killed. This betrayal is too much so now Devereaux,…

Although it has a whiff of VOD, this mid-budget thriller actually did make a profit back when it was possible to do so. Much of The November Man rests on Pierce Brosnan’s shoulders and unfortunately for him (and the film) hardly anyone else here can match him for presence or gravitas. Brosnan’s surly demeanour sidesteps his typical Bond persona. Donaldson’s functional direction is sturdy enough to ameliorate some of the more pressing deficiencies in the twist-reliant script.

This is one of hundreds of generic action movies starring an aged action star that came out in the 2010s. None of them impress me very much and this is no different. Movies like this just feel lazy and for money over anything else. The movie is well made, and the actors do decent jobs, but I can’t ignore how for the money this movie feels.

After capturing Federov, they force him to play Russian roulette as an interrogation technique. When he survives the first round, Pierce Brosnan says Federov’s odds are running out. This is a statistical fallacy, because he then spins the cylinder, making each shot an independent event. Federov’s odds will remain ~17% (the Ruger GP100 revolver he uses has 6 chambers) regardless of how many rounds they play.

“The November Man”, like so many of its paperback action peers, lives and dies almost entirely by the charisma of its leading actor. Thankfully, it’s tough to go wrong when your headliner is Pierce Brosnan, who shows in this 2014 spy thriller directed by Roger Donaldson that he would have been perfectly capable of continuing to play James Bond if given the chance (in fact, I’m all about the idea of bringing him back in a one-off legacy sequel, a…

Action Extravaganza There’s not nearly as much action here as there needed to be for me to call this great, and the story gets very convoluted, but Pierce Brosnan is so damn good in this that he makes it worth watching. I don’t see myself rewatching this any time soon, but overall, it’s still a solid spy thriller.
