“Well, what shall we hang: the holly, or each other?” Classically filmed and designed, it’s a powerhouse of a picture that holds up more than fifty years later as a testament to the kind of actors that could burn it all to the ground around them and still make every moment of the film look so damn beautiful. This is just what I need to get me in the Christmas spirit 🎄

Switches from wit to venom faster than the flip of a coin. It’s almost impressive to note how high the stakes feel, considering that they are vehemently personal, yet they resonate on an epic, virtually blockbuster-level scale. This unflinching yet spirited clash between two titans is unmatched by anything in today’s cinematic standards. Yet, The Lion in Winter offers even more than the sum of its two main parts. It goes beyond a simple battle, transcending into what can only be described as the greatest domestic war of all time.

If the dialogues of today’s films were half important and transcendent than they are in this film, I’m sure they would be much more interesting.

Part of Buddy the Elf, What’s Your Favorite Color? “I hope we never die.” “So do I.” “Do you think there’s any chance of it?” The year was 1969. Nominations for the 1968 Academy Awards were soon to be announced. Naturally, the films leading the Oscar discussion and the nomination field were 2001: A Space Odyssey, Stanley Kubrick’s dazzling venture into the far reaches of space, human evolution, and the future, and Rosemary’s Baby, Roman Polanski’s American debut featuring an oustanding Mia Farrow performance and a memorable exploration of maternal anxiety and paranoia. The two films combined to sweep the ceremony held in March, with 2001 winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and Best Cinematography,…

There is something so endearing about the fact that Katharine Hepburn was a big fan of Peter O’Toole and wanted desperately to make a film with him after seeing Lawrence of Arabia because… well, same. This movie is hilarious and spectacular in its own right, but my goodness is that the most magnificent pairing. You can tell the two of them are just having a blast working with each other and it is a real privilege to watch. They are unbelievably strong, but then they also have the most tremendous supporting cast. This film is just as good as everyone always said, and it flies by in the blink of an eye.

If you thought YOUR family Christmas gatherings were dysfunctional, just watch The Lion in Winter, or read a sampling of my favorite quotes: – “I’d hang you from the nipples, but you’d shock the children.” – “A king? Because you put your ass on purple cushions?” – “Well, what shall we hang… the holly, or each other?” – “Oh Eleanor, you’ve brought me my tombstone! You spoil me!” – “I’m vilifying you for God’s sake— pay attention!” Peter O’Toole and Katharine Hepburn are a pairing made in heaven.

Man, I know Christmas with the family can be stressful, but this is a whole new level. James Goldman’s script is delightfully nasty, and the cast delivers each venomous line with a twinkle in their eye.

Love how long this movie holds its opacity, that there are so very few moments throughout where the viewer can be certain if any given character is being truthful. O’Toole’s Henry II is very pleasing, steely-eyed in one scene and boisterous and playful the next, equally physical and intellectual. Hepburn is blazing, gets some of the best lines of the film and just totally fills the screen in her moments of sadism and irony and gleeful daggering. Timothy Dalton as Philip was also a favorite. Delicious in its toxicity & nuance. Logan Roy has this movie on his vision board.

Beautifully written, composed, performed. There’s a scene “with a bed and tapestries where things got said” that was actually one of the best movie scenes I’ve ever watched (The actor for Phillip and Anthony Hopkins hooooooly shit the silences were loaded they were both so good). Everyone acted their fucking ass off! Especially especially Hepburn who still stole the show in a cast full of incredibly talented actors. I loved this and you should watch it immediately. I think they reused the giant chess set from Becket

Geoffrey: My you chivalric fool… as if the way one fell down mattered. Richard: When the fall is all there is, it matters. Immensely satisfying watching a family breakdown that’s not yours. In all seriousness, this is some of the finest acting ever put to screen and I just marvelled in it from start to finish.

Genuinely one of the most bafflingly epic movies I’ve ever seen, a parent text to Succession. Consider me gobsmacked. This feels like one of those movies you’d find on VHS at a grandparent’s house and probably never watch because it looks boring, but if you did watch it it would change your whole perspective on your grandparent because they own it, but then you’d try to talk about it and they’d just shrug and treat it like a normal everyday movie they watch sometimes.

Good, but Depressing as hell. Amazing visuals, excellent acting (especially from O’Toole – he rocks every second of this) great score from John Barry. But very grim storyline. Everybody hates each other. They’re all scheming and conniving.

I really liked Becket, so I was ecstatic to know that Peter O’Toole played along Henry II again, and the “sequel” was even more well-regarded. Look, I really wanted to adore this like others do, but the first half was a drag. Honestly don’t know what failed for me, but it took me over half the film to suddenly become invested in the drama. It wasn’t terrible, but it was a weird clouding of disappointment over what I was watching. Having…

“King Henry had no sons.” – Henry II Plantagenet, King of England, Duke of Normandy, of Aquitaine, Count of Anjou and Maine, Lord of Ireland. “Well, what family doesn’t have its ups or downs…” – Eleanor, Queen of England and Duchess of Aquitaine Of recent times, I have watched many a historical movie/show. Rare to see something that so obviously and fouidly could be from stage or screen. The tapestries allowing for ironies, double ironies, triple ironies? Every sentence could mean everything or nothing, every pronouncement, every title. I would follow Katherine Hepburn of Aquitaine into a meat grinder and thank her for the privilege.

“You are Medea to the teeth !” Katharine Hepburn is absolutely brilliant in this film. Every time she opens her mouth, it’s so sharp, mocking, funny, and intelligent : she’s perfect for the role – how Henry dared to imprison his queen ! “What family doesn’t have its ups and downs?” Absolutely brilliantly chaotic. The double, triple, quadruple crossings from family that all have their own agenda & schemes to win. A portrait of a dysfunctional family at Christmastime, but it’s literally the royal family. This is such a juicy historical drama. From the writing, you can definitely tell it was adapted from a stage play. These are lines that are meant to be shouted to the rafters! This is a bad film. A very bad film. Hollywood at its worst. Hollywood doing Culture. The Lion in Winter is based on a play – I don’t know it, but I presume it is a bad play. It is an amazing piece of work from director Anthony Harvey. The classic. old period atmosphere really pulls me in and sets the tone right from the start. At its core. it unfolds like a quintessential family drama and it is portrayed exceptionally well. The complex dynamic between the characters constantly fighting. scheming. and clashing against one another while still sharing that underlying bond is handled brilliantly on screen. The remastered 4K Bluray presentation looks really nice. The visual quality holds up great and the disc comes packed with amazing interview extras and bonus material that make it a fantastic release.

This movie is a treasure. The wittiness and pace of the dialog between Eleanor and Henry is virtually unmatched and Hepburn and O’Toole deliver it superbly and their chemistry is remarkable. Peter O’Toole and Katharine Hepburn star in a 134 minute historical film directed by Anthony Harvey, focusing on the power struggle between Henry the second and Eleanor. First saw this in high school. I remember being stunned (in a good way) by the quality of the acting. In the hands of a better director, this could have been one of the all time greats. As it stands, the film is rather bland in its rendering. It is kept afloat almost solely by its staggeringly powerful and naturalistic performances from everyone involved, especially the one from Katherine Hepburn. My boy Anthony was killing it right off the bat!

“Succession: 1183” A crystal-sharp script about familial love and hate, how the venom of the parents poisons their children, how we try to change and how we fail to our worst most impulsive natures, and how in the end, as age builds and time ticks on, we have to accept who we are and learn to love it and others inspite of it, or even because of it, else we crumble under the weight of our drastic corrections. The Lion in Winter drinking game: Easy: – Rosamund mention – “I fucked your dad” – Wanting to kill their children Medium: – Eleanor/Henry tense face off – Scheming to supplement absent love – problematic gay shit Hard: – Someone makes an alliance – Someone is betrayed – Eleanor/Henry true love

A complete masterpiece of character writing and performance. Hepburn and O’Toole are of course the standouts and are cutting, devious, and captivating from start to finish, but everyone is more than pulling their weight. The way the film and characters carry you from loving the catfighting at the start through to Henry and Eleanor’s final big scene as they crumble under the weight of their past mistakes is incredible. The cinematography is stagey basically all the way through but the power of the performaces and the way it lets everyone really act off each other makes that a strength rather than a weakness.

There are families. And then there are families who would happily destroy one another over Christmas dinner if the inheritance were sufficiently interesting. The Lion in Winter is one of the most gloriously vicious films about power I’ve ever seen. I absolutely loved it. What makes the film so delicious is that almost everyone is horrible. Henry II has his estranged wife Eleanor, his three sons, and the King of France over for Christmas so they can all squabble—strongly, I might add—about who will succeed him. An amusingly anachronistic joke about how this resembles the premise of King Lear even surfaces in the script. There are strong performances by veterans and newcomers alike: Peter O’Toole and Katharine Hepburn light up the screen with their love-hate relationship, while Anthony Hopkins, in his first major film role, and…

Mostly Hepburn, but some O’Toole showcase what great acting can be. Story and all the ’film bits’ just weren’t my cup of tea (was based on a play). The acting, and to a lesser extent the writing, gets all the credit

Superior performance from O’Toole as Henry ll. Would put you in mind of Succession. There are only so many stories as such, and they can only be recycled. The best new filmmakers can do is ‘up-cycle.’ (Henry mentions King Lear in the first few minutes too.)

Oh, my piglets, we are the origins of war. Interesting that this film is powered by a sensibility rooted deeply in its stageplay origins as so much revolves around performance – a terrific whirlpool of Machiavellian deceit forms around the voided souls of the power-hungry and the love-starved, and only when reduced to the most utter despondency can you be sure there’s any truth to the act. The film is propelled on the pace of their words, or, perhaps more…

The script is superficially interesting- entertainingly witty and caustic. But it does get a little repetitive after a while. It doesn’t surprise me that the original stage production was a flop. The whole thing is intensely theatrical, which doesn’t do it any favours. I don’t mind purely dialogue-driven movies, far from it (eg the magnificent Glengarry Glen Ross) but they do need to amount to something. Here, it quickly becomes clear that everyone’s always either lying, being deliberately and self-confessedly…

Excellent spiritual sequel to 1964’s Becket; with O’Toole returning as an older and wearier Henry II as he quarrels with his wayward sons John (Prince John of Robin Hood fame), Richard (The Lionheart) and Geoffrey. I could talk about the actual script here but we all know that it’s perfect. Hepburn is the obvious home run for performances here but Dalton as Philip is always who I think about the most.
