This movie has a reputation of being vastly inferior to the original. Pfffftttt! That it has more humor and Zorro now has a family life bothered people? That Zeta Jones is Miss Zorro now and there’s a Zorrito? C’mon! This film is just as entertaining, funny and action packed as the original. In some instances the action is even better staged and more thrilling than the first one. The train action sequence alone is brilliant. The team behind the first came back and kicked ass. Haters need to be bullwhipped Zorro style. Z’s on their asses.

Leave it to Kurtzman and Orci to write a Zorro movie about a conspiracy involving foreign agents, private security, doomsday weapons, secret cabals, a rigged election, and a false-flag bombing. It’s nice to see Zeta-Jones get a more active role in the Zorro-ing, but for all that plot this is mostly bereft of incident in favor of endless scenes of, you guessed it, characters explaining the plot to each other. And much more so than the first movie the fights here, shot mostly medium-close, are a bit mechanical and rehearsed and lacking in ferocity, as well as being generally dependent on gags about guys getting hit in the balls. There’s also a train setpiece at the end that contains some truly dreadful digital compositing…I miss rear-projection. More superheroes need to tag their enemies.

The gap between 1998 and 2005 might as well be a gulf of decades; the Hollywood landscape had changed too much after the likes of Neo and Spider-Man. In short, the analog magic is gone. So, “Legend of Zorro” pivots to PG in an attempt to win the family crowd, which I’m not necessarily against, but why not then follow the “Mummy Returns” mode of taking the whole family on an adventure? Instead, this script is flawed from the jump: it contrives a convoluted scenario in order to drive a wedge between Banderas and Zeta-Jones, when their onscreen chemistry was one of the highlights of the previous entry.

I graduated high school in 1998 and I could have sworn I saw The Legend of Zorro in theaters that same year. Like, I would have put money on it I was so sure. I was absolutely shocked when I saw it was actually released in 2005…just a few short years before my wife and I started dating again for the third time. This is a late nineties movie through and through…how could I be seven years off?!? Because it was a sequel that I had completely forgot had existed and probably never saw 😆. Which makes complete sense because I swear I enjoyed Zorro and was shocked by how cheesy and boring the movie I was watching was. My…

Worse than the first Zorro in every aspect. There’s too much father figure Banderas and not enough Zorro, Banderas and Zeta-Jones’ romance isn’t interesting anymore, the story is a lot less intriguing; it’s just a big, but expected, step down from Mask of Zorro.

Another universally despised sequel due to minor flaws. The Legend Of Zorro may not be as smooth as it’s predecessor, but this Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones reunion is bombastic when it has to be. First, the splendid child actor who played Joaquin (Elena and Alejandro’s son) is adorable. The practical effects looked all too real especially during that painful looking jousting scene while the last arc is an exciting climax from our masked crusader. The set design and costumes felt authentic for its time as well. Yes there’s flaws – from the forced humor, sagging opening arc, awkward dialogue and a runtime longer than it should be – but this is minute compared to the entertainment factor The Legend Of Zorro served.

The chemistry between Banderas & Zeta-Jones is off the charts. I thought they were gonna do it every scene they shared. Don’t know how/why this was received so poorly when this came out. Critics, were your eyes closed during that train sequence?

‘The Legend of Zorro’ is a molasses-slow affair with swashbuckling ennui via lymphatic sword fights. Ala ‘The Mummy Returns’, Martin Campbell misconstrues treacly family solidarity with derring-do. The stakes of Elena (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Alejandro’s (Antonio Banderas) wedlock bliss are an inferior substitute for revolutionary peasant upheaval. They bicker like an 1850s version of Lucy and Dezi Arnez. The scheme with the Knights of Aragon is preposterous as opposed to the mining operation in the 1998 sleeper hit. With a…

My closest points of reference for these movies is obviously Pirates of the Caribbean, from the sword play, the explosive action, and Banderas really hams it up with and without the mask. Films with tactile elements immediately are given a lot of grace in the era of lazy green screen work. Like that one shot of the crater with little fire spots was just beautiful. I also really like that the horse is an asshole. But I’m also not going…

Don’t let other reviews fool you. This one, I feel, actually seems to have aged better than the first. It seems a bit fresher to me, less muted in action cliches and stale story beats, seems more realistic, and there’s no wildcat sounds during the music at the beginning or big action finale. And it still has the family friendly mix of old west action and humor mixed with a modern superhero flavor. Zorro is kind of like an 1850’s…

Der Böse will hier Amerika verhindern. 2,3 Sterne.

The Mask of Zorro is an entertaining, spectacle-driven swashbuckler. Its sequel, The Legend of Zorro, while maintaining some thrilling set pieces, is not. This film was overlong, with a middling narrative that never elicited excitement. It’s not all bad, but I didn’t care for it.

This isn’t a great movie, it’s just Alejandro being heartbroken for an hour and a half, and then Zorro! But still, it has it’s moment, Antonio Baneras does what he does, and it has a few good laughs. Padre Felipe was by far the best character.

Salvation and Damnation. You’ve got to die to find either one. Look…the film is dumb, silly and the right amount of fun. Let’s be real, were mostly here for Catherine Zeta-Jones. That and me not realising this was the sequel, not the first one.

Well, sometimes the movie that gets critically and commercially panned is actually that bad. That isn’t to say this sequel is without merit. But it suffers from a truly inept script, courtesy of known Star Trek ruiner Alex Kurtzman. It has the spunk of a classic serial, with plenty of comic relief and silly action to keep things lighthearted. But the action is spread thin with long bouts of poor dialogue and incoherent plotting. It has touches of The Mummy…

This movie isn’t considered as good as the first one to a lot but for a long time I had it above the first. The soundtrack is peak like the first, Banderas + Catherine Zeta Jones are great as expected, Joaquin’s actor was awesome for a child (RARE), and the villain was good. Watching Zorro be a dad in general was so fun and the highs of this movie rival the highs of the first one. Even as a 23 year old man this movie still gives me chills at certain points

A
Zorro sequel which took too long to come about and by letting two of the Abrams freaks on the screenplay it is annoying and has none of the charm the firs one did. I’ll give it this though, despite having the kiss of death which is a child actor it has some top tier henchmen for our boy Rufus to send out to do his goon work.

I think it would be refreshing for a change if an action film starring a protagonist who is a parent in their civilian life has an adventure where their reckless child/children isn’t constantly putting themselves in danger every five minutes. At this point the trope is annoying. It’s time to try something different. But I can’t say little Joaquin de la Vega is what makes this sequel not as good as its predecessor. The fault lies solely in the movie…

I’m a little surprised from the negative reception this movie has, but I kind of understand why this wasn’t as popular as the original. I thought it was okay, overall. The action is still entertaining, and a lot of humor to keep things light. Both elements tend to lean more on the sillier side this time around, which is fine, the first film had a nicer balance of that though. It did feel very sequely to me, though.. particularly how…

I guess I … cape for this movie? Went in knowing it was not as well-liked as the Mask of Zorro and I finished it thinking it is even better. Sure, we don’t get Anthony Hopkins in this one, but you know what we do get? A runaway train, a guy’s face exploding, and a horse that smokes a pipe. The action is creative and clean, Catherine Z-J gets to kick some ass, and even the kid actor is not…

-
N
A much sillier film than its predecessor, it’s closer in tone to Duccio Tessari’s Zorro (1975), starring Alain Delon, though director Martin Campbell occasionally ventures into outright absurdity. Even so, it remains wonderfully melodramatic and deeply emotional, buoyed by extraordinary stunt work—especially from that remarkable horse. Viva Tornado!

still enjoyable adventure, but it doesn’t have the same charm or excitement as the first movie. The action is entertaining, though the story feels a bit weaker and less memorable. A decent sequel, but The Mask of Zorro is still the clear winner.

Unfortunately not great, but Antonio still had the juice. We need more campy action adventure flicks (with practical effects). Also, we need this eras Errol Flynn (à la Antonio, Cary Elwes, and Orlando Bloom)

MID It comes across as incredibly corny and not in a fun way, and it is extremely tropey. Also, the character development from the first film disappears almost completely. But costuming and hair were alright (Minus Zorro himself without his curly hair from the first film), and both main actors did a superb job with what they had.

I liked this one better than the first. One thing that struck me was how similar Zorro is to superheroes like Batman or Spider-Man. He doesn’t have superpowers, but he does have the same influence over people, as well as the same dread instilled in criminals. One of the biggest similarities is how he has to learn to balance his personal life with his alter ego; the hallmark of any Spider-Man/Batman movie. However, because of the time period, people are more accepting of Zorro as a vigilante. All in all, very well made movie that might move up in rating later on

Significantly reduced level comedy. Story is technically better, certainly infinitely less basic. But the vibe loss is significant as well. The supporting cast, missing Anthony Hopkins is dire. The child and villain are good but the priest is not. The boy didn’t recognize his father’s voice? Wasn’t it largely Britain that supported the Confederacy (out of the European nations), not France? The green screen when they’re on the front of the train has not aged very well

As I feared unfortunately, a sequel that felt like stale left overs from the first. But, it was left overs of food I still enjoyed at all. Nowhere near as epic, nuanced, or memorable. The fight choreography was a big step down with a cheaper feel to the film with a pretty poor first act setting up the plot. But towards the second half there are some enjoyable moments for sure.

Not as good as the first movie. The plot was just made in a very weird way. To create the marital tension just for the woman to realize he was right, shrouding the divorce in a mystery that ended up just being US federal agents was weird. Far better than its reputation would have you believe. Yes, it’s much sillier than the first film but more often than not it’s funny rather than cringe and thanks to Director, Martin Campbell, at the helm this is still packed full of genuinely impressive practical action, while Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zits Jones continue to be sexy as hell with tons of chemistry. Martin Campbell’s still-lovely masked hero Zorro rides again. A fast-paced and spectacular sequel to a great start to the story. More humor and explosiveness included. The highly entertaining adventure now has a new member as heartbreaking Joaquin (Adrian Alonso) is the star of the film. The boy is awesome of his emotions and expressions. It wasn’t quite up to the level of The Mask of Zorro because the structure wasn’t as stirring and emotional. However, it is a truly wonderful adventure for the whole family!!

I actually think the Mark of Zorro is one of the most enjoyable action films of the 90s. I’d place it on the same ground as The Mummy. I remember this one came out. I was like a sophomore in high school and I was sick. I remember renting this on PPV, which meant it played on a loop for 24 hours straight. I think I watched it like 2.25 times over the course of the day, slipping in and out of fever dreams, and I just remember disappointment.
