Clearly a sprawling epic, the set pieces are brilliant, and the scenery is breathtaking. Tom Cruise is Tom Cruise, and that is always a plus. Unfortunately, it is limited by the overuse of cliches—a story about the Samurai honour code and integrity that was clearly manufactured through the Hollywood system. Not to say it’s disrespectful, but the tone feels a little off and over-romanticised. I also just think it’s a little dull at times. It does, however, manage to strike a pretty good balance between grand size and intimacy, and it definitely contains one of Zimmer’s best scores. I had a decent time, but I don’t think I’ll be watching it again anytime soon.

It’s true: according to Wikipedia, Tom Cruise is indeed still the only samurai on record, and has been since 1877.

It’s insane that one of our biggest movie stars is also one of the most underrated actors out there.

Not dissimilar to the way Cruise devotes himself to the principles of the samurai way, Zwick has spent decades honing his craft and becoming a master of the art of the 3-star classic that is either your dads or some guy from your high school’s favorite movie of all time by virtue of the fact they’ve seen it no less than 600 times on TV. Here he takes a stab at one of those movies where a swagged-out white guy travels to a foreign land and (faced with the horrors of the modern West) adopts their “weird” spiritual, noble customs and earns their respect by having the pure heart of an ancient hero. The result is an expensive historical war…

Same director, but this film manages to be the exact inverse of ‘Glory’, a film about a white man who bravely fights and dies to liberate others from a cruel and oppressive feudal social order, in this one a white man fights and *lives*–like an absolute coward–to preserve one. Despite Edward Zwick’s bird-brained conception of the Samurai rebellion against the Meiji restoration as some kind of indigenous people’s struggle, through a little thing I like to call “movie magic”–incredible sword duels, battle scenes, and Tom Cruise–this movie is a winner.

That score… Absolutely insane. Hans Zimmer never fails to amaze me. I’ve always been a giant fan of his Batman and Pirates of the Caribbean score but I think this might be my new favourite.

“The Last Samurai” is a modern classic, a real people’s champ. While critics dismissed him as “quite good”, he left a lasting impression on the audience. And he is still underestimated and overlooked too often. I can not understand that! The story of an American military advisor in Japan at the end of the 19th century, who is arrested by the “enemies” and gets to know and love their culture, always hits the heart and also keeps on entertaining. The battles are enormous and brilliant, Tom Cruise is not only supported by the Japanese actors (above all Ken Watanabe and Hiroyuki Sanada), but is almost played against the wall by them and the long runtime never stretches. But the core…

Very sound in its depiction of old Japanese customs, traditions & way of life, featuring an interesting story, convincingly performed by the cast, benefitting from impressive work by the crew, and steered by beautiful music from Hans Zimmer, The Last Samurai is a story of romanticism vs modernism, purity vs corruption, and a conflict of two different cultures. Co-written & directed by Edward Zwick, his research of Japanese history, culture, customs, traditions & accent is commendable and the plot manages to be emotionally investing for the most part if not all the way. Camerawork is top-notch, both during the battle scenes and while capturing the westernisation of 19th century Japan. Pacing is steady throughout, and the film as a whole scores high in…

It might not be the accurate portrayal of Satsuma rebellion but the movie is really good. At that point hollywood had only been presenting asian stereotypes. You could call this movie a good attempt in introducing japanese culture to Hollywood. Hans Zimmer’s music complements the cinematography. The cast is original there’s no white-washing there and Tom Cruise is Tom Cruise.

Конечно, автаро-спартакоподобные истории праведного перебежчика — такое себе, но, бл, какой же Том Круз ахуенный. Итого столь высокую оценку дополнительно поднимает Коюки Като.

“The perfect blossom is a rare thing. You could spend your life looking for it, and it would not be a wasted life.” “And so the days of the Samurai had ended. Nations, like men, it is sometimes said, have their own destiny.” No country has had a destiny as great and as tragic as Japan.

One of the best samurai movies ever made. It offers a deep look into the Japanese way of life and what it truly means to be a samurai, while highlighting the importance of never forgetting where we come from—no matter how complex life gets. The screenplay is near perfect, and Tom Cruise delivers one of the finest performances of his career. Btw “No Mind” ⛩️

It’s laughable that a non samurai could master the craft to the same level as professional samurais. But if anyone has a shot it’s Tom Cruise.

Certainly part of the dudes rock canon, but another one of these pseudo-historical epics that didn’t really do anything for me. Cruise and Watanabe have excellent chemistry with each other, but the film is always failing to escape its blockbuster sensibilities as it earnestly pursues this story about the samurai code. There are a number of really bizarre and forced moments of humor (that Cruise sells with the conviction you’d expect), and though the action is well-shot, the fact that…

What I loved most about this movie is how it makes you understand that sometimes a person can completely change the way you see the world. It’s not just about samurai or war. It’s about finding meaning, belonging, and something worth standing for. I loved watching Nathan slowly become part of a world that was completely different from his own, and how much that world changed him. The story, the atmosphere, the characters, the honor and sacrifice — everything stays with you. Not quite a five-star movie for me, but definitely one I really loved.

When it shines, it REALLY shines. The visuals, Ken Watanabe, obviously the score But this entire thing is just retreading old ground. Not once was it genuinely “compelling” because I knew the direction it was going the entire time and it never really earned it. Zwick and his screenwriters just weren’t quite equipped to do this justice And still watching Tom Cruise and Ken Watanabe go nuts in full samurai get up is cool
