“No, we’re not stupid. We might be horny old pigs, but we ain’t stupid.” Wes Craven’s directorial debut is a cheap and poorly conceived exploitation thats aged like milk. Relying purely on shock value rather than building any sort of tension, The Last House on the Left offers very little as a horror; mostly just feeling gross despite not being especially graphic, with neither good ideas or technical strength to justify it’s excessively dark themes. At the very least it provided Craven with filmmaking experience, but beyond that it’s uninteresting and distasteful.

A violent and gritty explosion onto the film scene for Wes Craven, it’s also possibly the most famous entry in the rape/revenge subgenre. Last House on the Left is a remake/retelling/reimagimanition of Bergman’s Virgin Spring. It tells the same story. Daughters who are raped and killed by pure evil. Through happenstance, the murderers stumble upon the parents, and then revenge takes place. In both films, the evil is the murderers, but the failure is from something higher. In Virgin Spring, the failure is God. In Last House of the Left, the failure is the government. 1972 was a weird time for America. An endless war in Vietnam with many kids being killed. Killer hippies from the Manson murders just a…

Bleak, upsetting, and filled with zero hope… a notorious hard watch—the 70’s were underway. This feels like a checkpoint between Romero’s 1968 living deadmare and Tobe Hooper’s 1974 sun soaked Texas grizzle as the genre continues its forever mutation… that 68 to 74 era where the ‘modern’ horror film found its footing has always been a huge fascination for me, and The Last House on the Left is a big part of that. Back in the early 90’s, this and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre were the two films that, when I picked up the box at the video store, I felt like I was doing something wrong—those very distinct vhs artwork glistening in the plastic protective cases felt like these two titles were…

You must think we’re stupid right? No, we’re not stupid. We might be horny old pigs, but, we ain’t stupid. -Krug Stillo When I was a jaded teenager I dismissed this movie as cheap camp exploitation that wasn’t “scary”. It was a mixture of silliness and grittiness that didn’t mesh together and I could not for the life of me understand what the big deal about this film was. Over the years I’ve either become completely delusional about what this movie is really about or I’ve come to recognize it’s genius. I’m not sure which one it is anymore to be quite honest. The silliness I mentioned is still there, but I think it’s purpose is to represent the Brady…

The Road To Halloween – Eliminating The Horror ‘Classics’ To keep from turning it off and putting on something that you like instead, keep repeating it’s only 80 minutes long…. it’s only 80 minutes long….it’s only 80 minutes long…. The Last House On The Left is a film that has an interesting back-story when it comes to its history of censorship and being banned, especially here in the UK. A back-story that is far more interesting than anything that actually happens in this film. This really is an incredibly tedious and laughably inept film from a director I don’t really care much for in the first place. I quite liked Red Eye until Cillian Murphy’s impression of Herr Flick in…

“Hot damn, I wish I was something else sometimes.” History has an interesting way of codifying certain untruths as true. Whether by way of shortcut or faulty memory or utilitarian spin by the powers that be, things that didn’t happen—or, perhaps more often, didn’t exactly happen quite like that—worm their way into the official record and thus become established fact, the archaeological effort needed to contradict them either underfunded or underreported (or both). As but one minor example, take President Jimmy Carter’s famous “malaise” speech. Delivered in 1979, Carter’s speech about the energy crisis and the need for a “windfall profits” tax on the oil industry referred to a “crisis of confidence” among the American people but never used the…

WES CRAVEN’S DEBUT FEATURE IS A GRITTY EXPLOITATION FILM & A CHORE TO GET THROUGH. I might get some hate for this one. I respect low-budget filmmaking. Everyone has to start somewhere, and exploitation films were huge in the ’70s for some reason. But this was not an enjoyable watch whatsoever. It’s watchable because of its gritty cinematography, and there are some moments of genius, like the nightmare scene toward the end of the film, but that’s pretty much where the…

This was not as good as I remember it being. The soundtrack is distasteful, and there isn’t a very developed plot. However, as far as directorial debuts go, this wasn’t the worst I’ve seen 🤷♂️ You can definitely tell what Wes Craven was trying to achieve, but unfortunately wasn’t quite able to in a meaningful or particularly interesting way. He has definitely grown a lot since this!

Pitoyable. I Spit on your Grave.

I feel like the score for this movie was not supposed to be for this movie. But then also the song has all the characters names, and the plot, so.

I really, really loved this movie. As bleak, hopeless, and mean spirited as it is, it’s clear to me that there was a good deal of heart put into it. The 70’s were a time culturally where female victims were blamed for being victimized, especially after sexual violence. Many exploitation films of this period make a point of saying “Look at this for what it is, and try to say it’s their fault.” It’s unglamorous and brutal, with no ounce…

IT RESTS ON 13 ACRES OF EARTH OVER THE VERY CENTER OF HELL..! “The Real Thing” for an American psyche still not over Night of the Living Dead. It’s obviously not as “good” as some of it’s contemporaries (The previously mentioned Night of the Living Dead, but also Targets, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, etc.) but it does a fantastic job finding it’s own sense of Hell amidst Vietnam War-era anxieties, sensibilities and atrocities. There is no hope. The Roads…

This flick has officially been demystified for me. I knew that this was gonna be a tough and disgusting watch, but I didn’t know that it was also actually so stupid and poorly done that it undermined this from being a fully effective unpleasant experience. Having seen movies from before and after this film’s release that did just as bad or worse things, but with a more consistently bleak and horrible tonal experience, this was actually a lot easier to…

While quite sleazy, Craven handles the material with humor as seen in his later franchises in his classic debut. The Rape and Revenge genre isn’t for everyone, but this is definitely one of the stand outs of the genre. The SA is implied and it’s the general nastiness of the villains over overt gratuitous violence. Speaking of violence, the last 15 minutes absolutely rule.

Unfortunately, this one was pretty underwhelming for me. I expected something much more shocking, especially considering its reputation, but the film didn’t really have the impact I was hoping for. Maybe it felt very different when it came out in the 70s, but compared to the amount of much more brutal films that exist today, I didn’t find it particularly disturbing. There are some interesting ideas here, but overall it just wasn’t for me.

Better than expected! Tbh this makes so much sense that this was Craven’s first film, he’s really had his hand in all the sub genres of horror, AND does it well. I still feel like the 70s exploitation era was peak for disturbing horror. I love Wes Craven, what a horror icon truly!!!!

RIP Wes Craven, David Hess, Fred J. Lincoln, Richard Towers Sits somewhere between a 3 and a 3.5. The tone here is really odd to say the least. This movie was awful. I hated every second. It was grim and disgusting in the gore scenes and just boring the rest of the time.

After watching I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE the other day, I realised this was a long-term blindspot of mine from the early exploitation era, and boy does it not match that former (albeit 6 years later) classic. Whereas ISOYG features better artistic direction, acting and quiet thoughtfulness (and on a smaller budget!), this is delivered with whiplash tonal changes (the police are from an entirely different proto-Police Academy comedy, let alone the soundtrack choices), a sleazy opening (not just the…

Even if it’s a rape-and-revenge film, we already see roots of comedy/satire Craven loves to put in his horror films. While some may find tonal shifts (and there are many of them) jarring, I think it adds much to the nightmare-ish grindhouse quality to this film. I need to rewatch remake soon.

At the very least, it’s an accurate portrayal of the incompetence of police. It’s also very 70s and the acting is fine. The revenge climax is a little satisfying, but the dad really tried to Home Alone things while forgetting he’s an old man. The mom at least is smarter about it, though I think the script has her do things outside her character just for Craven’s attempt at being edgy. Overall, it’s a clumsy attempt at something like I…

Bergman by Craven Mari Collingwood (Sandra Peabody) is on her way to a concert for her 17th birthday. The concert is held in a bad neighborhood where she and her friend Phyllis Stone (Lucy Grantham) become the victims of a group of criminals who recently escaped from prison. Written and directed by Wes Craven, The Last House on the Left is his directorial debut. It is a “rape and revenge” or “rape-revenge” horror film, a subgenre inspired by Jungfrukällan (1960),…

Not a movie to enjoy, but I guess there are things out there not very enjoyable. Sticks with you, for better or worse. Also: almost feels like a dreamy nightmare satire about the perfect family in times of increasing violence – so it got 70s written all over it. And I guess it’s not a coincidence, that some parts or elements remind me of ‘Taxi Driver’, ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’, ‘The Assault on Precinct 13’., and ‘A Clockwork Orange’ which this movie predates (except ‘Clockwork’). Anybody else clocked “Singing in the Rain”?

I like watching older films every once in a while, this movie really just reminded me how evil people can be but also the scariest part is how women can easily betray each other – because I don’t think I could even do anything like that to any woman I’ve ever had an issue with.

I was so confused by the tone with this one. The music completely threw me off with its folk-like sound but then it’s juxtaposed with the subject matter and harsh score. This is easily some of the most uncomfortable violent sequences I’ve seen.

Some of the most perplexing musical choices in horror movie history? Wes & Hess were clowning us with the corny adult contemporary soft rock and mid-century suburban Muzak laid over straight up evil vile acts of sadism. This movie feels tapped in (perhaps a little too tapped in) to the dark currents of 70s serial killers, cults, and political violence— and foundational to the turn in the horror genre from spooky to slasher. Unlike nearly every other horror film, the villains…

Difficult watch, but I stuck around for the “catharsis” of the parents revenge. The first half was so sadistic and upsetting, I figured that the finale would turn the volume up even higher. But it doesn’t. It turns into a Home Alone-style booby trap fest and some lame fights. The whole thing is quite poorly constructed as well, which I could forgive in the first half because it added a sense of gritty realism. But the second half really pissed…

Been putting this one off (understandably) for way too long. Type of shit that makes you want to take a shower. The inescapability of pure evil against the assumed protections of the modern world.

Hilarious that the actor who played the peeping tom criminal (who looks identical to Christopher Moltisanti) was a porn director in real life. The last 20 minutes were obviously satisfying, but not worth the hour buildup of sadistic violence that, thankfully, has not aged well. I only discovered this was a remake of The Virgin Spring recently, which handled the story with much more power and sensitivity. No idea why this achieved such a reputation. It’s amazing to me that Wes Craven ended up having a career after this film. I mean, I guess I can understand somewhat from a 1972 perspective. Restrictions were lightening up a bit on films, and the horror genre had been redefining itself. Woah. The Last House on the Left was brutal. I had heard the stories, but this was a heavy watch. Oh, how I would’ve loved to have been a fly on the wall during the initial screenings of Wes Craven’s feature debut, back in 1972. The shock factor must have been utterly wild. The slapstick comedy and soundtrack were both so jarring and took me out of it at times. The sitcom-style end credits were an added punch to the gut after this bleak as fuck story. I love how much people hate cops in this film, though.

To everybody’s surprise, David Hess had the random ability to compose the greatest original soundtrack in sexploitation history in addition to one of the most malevolent screen presences ever. It’s a soul-crushing and explicit breakdown of the teen…
