The Italian Job is slightly tainted these days. Firstly by that irritating fucking band that plays at every England international football match (one of the reasons I don’t watch international football any more) blaring out The Self Preservation Society whenever they can. And secondly by the fact that a certain line after an ill-fated explosion has passed into “…and Trigger pulled a face.” alike pop culture over-exposure. If you can look past these irritations, however, it is still absolutely tremendous fun. Not just for the actual heist and escape in the latter stages of the film, either. It’s plenty of fun before that as well as serial philanderer Michael Caine persuades incarcerated gentleman crime lord Noel Coward (“Well, I hope…

High-quality Bond imitation, replacing government agency with criminal agenda. As expected, this ultra-famous car-crazy classic is two thirds scheming and skulking, and one third chase sequence, but boy is that chase worth the wait! Not only does this have the definitive cliffhanger ending, but outside of The Bourne Identity, it’s the ultimate in Mini Cooper advertisements. Wobbly writing aside, Michael Caine is a national treasure. It really doesn’t get any more British than this.

The heist itself is so good it’s worth sitting through an hour of terrible jokes and banter. Also this features the prison from Paddington 2.

The first hour is way too straightforward for a heist movie but then it ratchets things up for the final act. Gotta admit, the getaway is a blast though! However, it also then ends in the LOONIEST possible way and with the LOONIEST song. Nuts.

Hang on a minute lads, I’ve got a great idea . . . What if we took the James Bond aesthetic, applied to the caper film and dialed the farce and getaway up to 11? The set-up loaded is with satiric social criticism. Crime lord Noël Coward absurdly masterminds a criminal corporation from his post as prison warden with equivalencies drawn to the Italian Mafia’s not just organized, but operatically choreographed operation. Charlie Croker infuses the scheme with an evergreen optimism, smug reverse snobbery, and a swashbuckling spirit. Charlie is a modern privateer, sailing stylishly with a letter of marque issued by his country, empowered to capture vehicles and plunder booty to prop the Exchequer for fun and profit. All…

This shit STANKY Honestly should have seen it coming after the 3rd scene in a row where gangs of barely clothed women throw themselves on Michael Kane within the opening 20 minutes of the movie. Weird vibes. Don’t trust British people

Kinda boring. Funny in parts. Decent car chase

It amazes me that Michael Caine has more charisma than the entire cast of THE ITALIAN JOB (2003) combined. And the writer of the film clearly saw THE WAGES OF FEAR to come up with that awesome ending.

Peter Collinson’s The Italian Job is one of those films that occasionally makes you wonder why it became a cult classic rather than something else. From the very first part, we’re in full Austin Powers territory — or rather, what seems to be one of its sources of inspiration: garish colours, eccentricity, caricatured characters, very dated humour and a pop aesthetic that quickly veers into kitsch. There is certainly a charm to it if you enjoy this sort of 1960s…

One if the great British heist movies with Michael Caine in fine form, Sir Noel Coward having fun, and one of the great car chases through a crowded Turin. A classic.

After seeing a clip of the ending last year, I’ve been hunting the Italian Job ever since. Luckily, BBC iplayer came in clutch and I was able to watch it. This was great. A very fun watch and had me laughing at multiple times. Michael Caine is great when he’s in anything and the ending is one of the greatest. I don’t know why they made a remake, it’s good as it is.

Well this really is just a perfect film. But I wonder where on earth the gold is kept? The huge gold bar shaped golden truck? Naaaa, no way.

Fresh as a daisy. Is this the oldest heist film with a hacker on the team?

What’s there not to love a good plot, cool characters and of course a great and open ending, I could watch this so many times and still enjoy it. It’s also a classic in every way

A gimmicky car chase film that does not hold together as a narrative. The location scouts and location managers give the 2nd unit dominate the mise en stunt driving the screen time to turn the drama into a full sized hot wheels play time. Plus A weak uncertain tone and repetitious driving footage never puts us in the driver’s seat. Terribly dated song score.

A decent movie that has the iconic car chase scenes through picturesque Italy. That’s I can praise for. The humor, precisely, is too reliance on the British politics and culture at that time. There are a lots of queer jokes that I was so lost and confused I thought the film just bad. The acting is rather decent—the cast has done a great job.

Honestly so surprised that such an iconic classic could hold up so poorly in the modern day. Did not feel that stakes in this heist like I should have, found the iconic Mini Cooper car chase quite slow, and disliked almost everything about this action comedy caper. The utterly exquisite cinematography saves a lot of this movie, it’s glorious to look at, and so does Michael Caine’s performance which blows everybody else away. So slow, so bogged down with that awful ‘60s British patriotism that cringes me out endlessly. I actually think the Marky Mark remake might be better.

69′ senesine göre böyle bir “production” ile soygun temalı filmi güzel becermişler. Michael Caine’in rolüne uyumu cuk diye oturmuş.

Cute film. It has a sort of elegance in visuals that the Bond films of the era kind of lacked. I suppose this is what you get when you have Douglas Slocombe, perhaps best known for the original Indiana Jones films, as the cinematographer. Even something as crass as Michael Caine arriving at a hotel room full of bikini-clad women is very cinematic.

Michael Caine should really respect the clear boundries Margaret Blye had for their open relationship. Not nearly enough gathering the crew scenes. Shit does really pop off though.

I don’t think many people can get more British 60’s than this. Sure there were a few scenes that would probably bump this down to a 3.5, but that whole scene with the kittens, as well as most of the second half really sold it for me. And Quincy Jones always does an amazing job at music for movies!! And even though I don’t love 2 door cars, that red Mini Cooper is calling to me…

“EU TENHO UMA GRANDE IDEIA!” Caramba, que filme de assalto divertido. Ao ver o pôster se espera uma trama mais séria e violenta com bastante ação. No entanto, o que se recebe aqui é um filme dividido em dois atos onde o primeiro cumpre bem o fator de delimitar todo o plano a ser executado e o segundo traz a execução de uma forma muito gostosa de assistir e aproveitar. As saídas são bem divertidas e Michael Caine parece treinar…

I watched this movie as a kid and distinctly remember recreating scenes from it with my Playmobil figures, cars and conveniently small gold blocks. It seemed fitting then, to add it to my eldest son, and I’s summer watchlist (his review follows below). The movie is a cult classic for a reason. It’s charming, witty and more cockney than a serving of jellied eels. It’s dated to a degree, sure. But that doesn’t take away from how much damn fun it is. “Amazing fun 2 watch 🙂 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️” – My eldest son.

Great movie, horrible ending
-
B

It’s a self preservation society 🎶 What a jolly song to end the heist. For a 60s movie that’s some damn good car chase sequences. That’s the same prison from In The Name of the Father (1993)!

Why does this movie have no ending? It’s not even “ambiguous”, it’s “characters do something stupid for no reason and screw themselves and then the movie just stops” so I have to assume it was some sort of “crime doesn’t pay” censorship imposed on the production?

Wow! I couldn’t believe how much I loved this and why I hadn’t ever gone back and watched it considering as a teenager I probably would have said this was a top 5 all time movie. And going through the 60s Bonds made this one also familiar. Even one of the opening songs was from someone doing a Bond song. The rest of the soundtrack was weird four piece orchestra or harpsichord or something haha. The getting the gang together…
