Important to remember that the death of Sylvia Plath led to her husband writing this story to comfort his children with their loss. Then Brad Bird wrote the concept of this (what if a gun had a soul) after the murder of his sister. Makes your cry just a little bit harder.

Vaguely remember that I watched this as a kid and it absolutely holds up today. Small but charming cast of characters (Kent Mansley is such a great villain, up there with some of Disney’s best), very tight writing, and a sharp, somewhat sarcastic sense of humor that all really hit. Of course, it’s the relationship between Hogarth and the Giant that brings everything together, and its contrast to the Cold War paranoia that surrounds them. By far my favorite of Brad Bird’s films.

Watched it exhausted with one earbud in on an overnight flight. Absolutely holds up aside from some kinda dumb plot choices at the end (it is a kid’s movie from the 90s). Emotional beats are still really strong, animation style is fantastic.

The film has its heart in the right place, delivering strong anti-war themes and a solid critique of military paranoia. The animation was also good, especially those futuristic war sequences. However, the film fell a bit flat for me when it came to the characters. They felt somewhat underdeveloped, which made it hard to get fully invested in their arcs despite the good core message.

Strong, emotional action. Parts of this are GODZILLA, and other parts are a humanist tale of friendship, a friendly giant, and a corrupt government, that make this more like ET then anything. Good film.
