(no real spoilers per se, but i’m talkin about the tone of the film so if you wanna go in completely blind on what to expect, go away!!! but also, the movie is 3.5 hours, there is a strong chance you will have forgotten all of this by the time the ending comes) About an hour into the film, the format starts to unravel in a way that makes you think “ah, this just might be another ‘portrait of a criminal’ Scorcese movie– but longer.” And it isn’t until the last hour that you can really feel what makes this movie different– there’s absolutely no joy in Scorcese’s portrayal of Frank’s life. No fun times, no “this is the life…

Third watch (first review). Some more stray notes: Love the structure so much. God Thelma. This easily could’ve been made with melodramatic suspense and anguish but she and Scorsese instead opt for this slow, matter-of-fact accumulation of detail that results in this heartbreaking rumination on the experience of time and decaying. There’s nothing even exciting about the hits! They’re shot with a sense of workmanship while Frank talks you through the mundane process and decision-making. They’re empty and soulless and final. (Which alongside a certain cremation triggers Frank’s obsession with “finality.”) Watching someone we actually care about receive that silent, hollow meat grinder is the closest Scorsese has ever come to horror, and when you step back from the film…

This won’t make a lot of sense but: I can’t honestly say every minute of this is necessary. But none of those minutes feel like a waste of time. This was everything I love about Marty and his films but polished. The most thoughtful, precise, and vulnerable film I’ve seen from him. Can’t wait to see it again!

Brevity in my recent logs is only because of lack of time at the moment. Hopefully I can return to these pages in the future to add thoughts. Watched at Hillsborough Cinemas, Hillsborough N.J. Glad I saw it on the big screen but very disappointed at the venue. The projection was ludicrous. The screen was littered with dead blue pixels. It looked like blue tinsel surrounding the image. When I complained to the employees, I received an “ok boomer” nod in response. I hate to slam an independently owned multiplex chain but the lack of quality control in theaters is one of the reasons we are seeing audiences lose interest in the theatrical experience.

when the movie ended and martin scorsese’s name appeared on the screen, a woman who was sitting next to me in the theatre stood up, clapped for a little while and then said WELL DONE, MARTY for everyone to hear and i can honestly say i have never been more represented by a person in my entire life well done, marty well done, robert well done, al well done, joe well done, harvey well done, y’all

Working stiffs. Not sure I’ve ever mentioned this before but I have a very personal fear of not… feeling… correctly. Like enormously important things are happening around you in a matter-of-fact, dissociative way that you can understand the significance of but you can’t shake this idea that you’re experiencing them wrong—like they’re a thing you’ve been vaguely told and taught about so you’re performing it like work when really you’re supposed to be doing more, feeling more, being more. Because that’s the point, right? Otherwise, what are we doing here? Needless to say this was a horror movie to me. There’s a stretch in this that genuinely shook me to my core, you’ll know it when you watch it; it…

Classic Scorsese with plenty of amazing performances from his long-time actors and kept me pretty engaged for most of its runtime… most of it. I really can enjoy a long movie (LOTR says hi), but this one could definitely have left some stuff off to feel a bit more streamlined. Not enough to dampen it too much for me, but gotta reserve a whole evening for a rewatch any time soon. Anyway, long movie, still fantastic… but what did happen to Jimmy Hoffa? Gotta say, that Tony Montana guy looks just like him.
-
N
Another daunting Scorsese epic that doesn’t feel heavy due to the run time, but instead the complex mix of themes, similar to Killers of the Flower Moon. The film spends most of its runtime building up the betrayal of Sheeran’s close friend Hoffa. The buildup and fallout of the betrayal share a melancholic subtext of the inevitability of his aging relationships. Whether those relationships are positive (Bufalino) or negative (Peggy), he longs for one final connection with them as the…

Death and finality are explored here in a way I’ve never seen in another movie. Also such a good final hour (out of 3.5 hahahahaha). I love the contained performance by Joe Pesci, some of his other (excellent) performances are over the top due to the nature of the absurdity of his characters (whom I love) but this really lets him be nuanced and show emotion. Probably Pacino’s best performance of the past 10 years.

It isn’t a period piece but someone could be excused for thinking it is. What an incredible film about the life of a mobster from start to finish along with all the historical events he was a part of. The last 50 minutes of this film was sadder than any tearjerker I’ve ever watched and that may be the biggest praise I’ve given to any director.

Unlike any movie I’ve seen. Extremely long and slow-paced which made it drag at times. Extremely memorable performances, especially from Al Pacino and Joe Pesci. The movie looked amazing, and the writing was very tight and very poignant. I especially liked the ending. The deaging was not significant enough to tell how young they were supposed to be which made following the timeliness very difficult at times. If you asked me how many years passed between events I wouldn’t be able to answer. But that aside it was a great film.

Robert De Niro paints houses for three and a half hours. In all seriousness this movie was fantastic. I love when Scorsese does movies like this. It feels like a love letter to mobster movies. I adore the colors in this movie. He uses super dull colors in order to make the bright colors really pop, and it’s awesome. It makes the whole movie so visually appealing. It’s quite a long movie, but it’s got something new going on every…

My first rewatch of The Irishman since January 2020. I loved it then, and now it’s all so much clearer that I feel like I can fully appreciate it. This was the third Scorsese film I watched in full, after Hugo and The Aviator. I watched this and those two before I even knew who Martin Scorsese was. Coming back to it now, it truly feels like a culmination of everything Scorsese has done throughout his career. What really strikes…

The Irishman is not really a gangster movie in the traditional sense. It looks like one, sounds like one, and contains all the familiar ingredients—Mafia bosses, assassinations, union corruption, guns, betrayals and wise guys but underneath all of that, it is a deeply melancholic film about aging, loyalty, regret and the emptiness of a life built around violence. What makes the film fascinating is that Frank isn’t presented as a flamboyant criminal mastermind. He’s almost deliberately boring: quiet, obedient and…

“I chose us over him. Fuck ’em. Fuck ’em” Even after he killed his best friend, after he got through prison and came out the other side, after his family was lost, he still never quite realized that the mob was always for the mob, and he was on the outside of it. I really enjoy these modern period Scorsese films because of how bleak it all gets. There is a grounding in it, even if there is reasonable doubt…

thought it was gonna be like goodfellas or casino. it’s like that but a lot more boring because it’s 3 and a half fucking hours. Would’ve been better if it was a full hour shorter. Some movies are long but you can’t tell. This movie was super long, and it felt super long because it’s just so dense, so much stuff packed into one movie. It’s still a very good movie though, just long and convoluted.

This film is different compared to Scorsese other gangster films, instead of focusing on making crime look cool. It focuses on old age, guilt and the lonely end of a gangsters life as he has no one left that cares for him. However the long run time and slow pace does make this film a very hard watch, especially towards the middle of the movie as you need a lot of patience. I also felt that for Scorsese last gangster…
-
M
I don’t want to beat a dead horse, but this was such a missed opportunity to let two younger actors to play Frank/Russ for the majority of this film. Pesci actually looks okay generally, but De Niro looks absolutely miserable in his scenes, if not evil with his terrifyingly blue eyes. He’s great in the final 30 mins of the film, his character being half his age completely hindered his ability to act competently. Pacino is fantastic. Crazy Joe was pointless. Tony Pro wonderfully hate-able. 3hr30 maybe 40 minutes too long, didn’t need the road trip. Worse yet also better than remembered.
-
𝐥

This is such a sad gangster movie. It’s such a small movie that’s told in a long way. There’s probably 30-45 minutes that drag, but the other 3 hours are really something. The ending hits like a crushing weight. What’s funny is how much this movie feels like the final chapter of a story that opened with Mean Streets. It feels directly tied to that movie. Frank Sheeran should be told that you don’t make up for your sins in church. You do it in the streets. You do it at home. The rest is bullshit and you know it.

This was a return to form for both Scorsese and DeNiro, arguably the greatest actor director collaboration after Mifune and Kurosawa (or Shimura and Kurosawa). I think many younger audiences do not fully appreciate the DeNiro Scorsese duo – if they make a movie together I am there. Scorsese finally worked with Al Pacino here – it is astounding to believe they never worked together. And the cherry on top was the return of Joe Pesci. The story…

It made me uncomfortable seeing the three leads (Joe Pesci, Robert De Niro, and Al Pacino) look so strange, especially Robert De Niro, who was supposed to be playing a man in his 20s or 30s at the beginning. This is just so different from the usual mobster movies from Marty. We usually see the glamorous life of the mob, and this just feels so different. I think this is a wrap on what this genre can show us anymore, at least from Scorsese’s standpoint. Before getting to the plot, this is one HELL of a cast. De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci… these three alone can carry any plot to greatness. Al Pacino was the funniest, Joe Pesci…

Really solid as Scorsese always is, gives a different perspective on the mob scene compared to his other films such as Goodfellas or Casino. Didn’t feel like 3.5 hours.

On rewatch, this Scorsese movie seems like a parody of a Scorsese movie. It’s like he’s trying to play his greatest hits but the instruments are out of tune. Is this entertaining? Sure, but it lacks depth of story + character that we’ve come to expect from the man himself. I don’t hate this movie by any means, but it’s one of the weaker of his filmography and there is no reason this needed to be almost 4 hours!!! One of my favorite Joe Pesci performances though. Also, the de-aging really stood out as unnecessary and bad this time around.

my mom watched some parts with me and said this was very nostalgic for her. something about how her great(?) uncle was wrapped up in stuff like this 😂

I was blown away with joe Pesci and Al Pacino, unreal performances. Not the biggest deniro fan, thought he did great but could’ve seen someone else really crushing the frank role. Seb Maniscalco appearance was dope, proud Italian watching him in this. Story was amazing, the progression of the movie was awesome. Felt more authentically violent as opposed to over stylized mob violence.

I will always cherish Robert DeNiro

maybe i’m the weird one here, maybe i’m totally wrong in this, but 3.5hr films are totally fine if it’s Scorsese doing it. sincerely hooked from start to finish, this didn’t feel like a three and a half hour runtime to me. again: i’m probably the weird one here

Honest review : i thought house painters painted house. (dis)honest review : Too political. Its like too many characters and few minutes later you’ll forgot.

i’ve been thinking a lot about this film recently and honestly i think 80% of the reason why i enjoy it is that there’s a certain atmosphere that scorsese creates. every moment feels intentional, the dialogue carries the pace so well, it’s reflective, it’s sharp, it’s saddening–everything is absolutely where it should be. truly difficult to describe.
