I like to think that if this was released now, it would be torn apart by audiences, rather than just a few critics. I like to think it would be roundly rejected and would inspire frequent think pieces that were also full of recommendations of what you should watch instead. But then I remember Green Book won best picture and that this film’s overt popularity is because it gives the people what they want. It gives them the stereotype of Blackness they expect and parades it for their amusement while also promoting a world in which ‘we can all get along’. A world underpinned by harmful stereotypes and damaging dynamics, and consistent othering. Here is an illustrative thing that happens…

Film #36 of “The December Catch Up”. 5 minutes in I knew this film would be great. 15 minutes in I knew this film would make my top 10 of 2012. Fantastic in every way possible, I urge anyone who hasn’t seen this yet to do so.

I find it hard to believe this super rich paraplegic that’s into extreme sports had never tried marijuana prior to hiring his one black friend.

It’s very rare that a film will make you feel such a way after watching it, but this is the type of feeling and emotion that I constantly chase when watching new films. The soundtrack, the emotion, storyline, character, this film really has everything and it’s honestly quite perfect in its own way. I can’t find any faults with it, and usually these types of emotional films have a fairly predictable ending, and whilst this isn’t the most shocking, it’s gets to the end and just makes you cry anyway with how good it is. Even from the start I was roped in, the story was so easy to follow and I grew a connection to the characters almost instantly.…

This film shows us that friendship can connect two completely different people It mixes laughter and tears and teaches us that life is more beautiful when we see it from another perspective Its message is simple: humanity is more important than any difference

The only good thing about French immersion was the media they put us on.

it’s good, really good. I love a comedy which can take itself serious too, I generally enjoy a majority of french films/actors etc but this is really good, it’s everything you want in a movie you’d watch for the sake of just feeling good. Maybe not so life changing or cinematically revolutionary but this movie is important, it’s a simple story to make you feel good and does it so much better than 99% of cinema. It’s really, damn good. “She’s got the hots for me”.

With the whole run time I didn’t get much from this film. It’s not bad but there’s nothing memorable.

This is, without a doubt, a movie everybody will need to see one day. The true story of Phillpe (François Cluzet) is an amazing one of hardship and the innate desire of everybody to be seen, to be known, and in Phillpe’s case, the desire to be viewed as an equal. Driss, played by Omar Sy has an amazing chemistry with François Cluzet that you can feel beyond the screen. Every moment we get to see of the two actors…

A hegemonic understanding of race served in the most crowd-pleasing way possible; assimilation into white high culture as the ultimate goal and proof of accessible equality.

C
The story feels so real and the humor here feels so healthy.
-
E
