This entire review is about the last 90 seconds of the movie so, yes, there are spoilers. For nearly all of the running time of The Housemaid I was either angry or distracted; no matter my other emotions, I was always deeply resentful that I was being forced to spend time with this collection of complete fools. All of that changed, however, in the 90 seconds when the “it was all a dream!”-type ending recast everything in an urgently fascinating way. I still hate everyone, but the ending suggested I’m supposed to, and it opens the film up in ways that are both frustrating and thrilling. Let me explain. The main thing that so exasperated me about the story of…

i will never ever EVER willingly step into an affluent south korean household because apparently all of them are host to the most insane and complicated backstabbing, misogyny, manipulation, drama, and other assorted behaviors that will likely make me into the unfortunate collateral damage of some extremely nuanced-and-justified revenge scheme on behalf of a wronged woman who’s also a yandere psychopath.

What kind of rat poison is that? Why does everyone have to open two other cupboards before they get to the rat poison cupboard, where the rat poison has been the whole time? How many times can someone fall asleep at a sewing machine? How many people can fall down the stairs?

Did you like Parasite? Were you a fan of its innovative and revolutionary approach to architecture and stairs in particular as symbolism for social imbalance and vehicle for horror-like dread? How about it’s unique ability to infuse anti-bourgeois commentary on Korean class warfare, familial disintegration and fluid tracking shots for a genre-bending thrill ride of unnerving, at times jaw-dropping effect? If you answered yes to one or more of the above, then have I got the 60 year-old movie for you! Just add a touch more sexual obsession, a spoonful of venomous melodrama, and a generous helping of betrayal, revenge and all things deceitful; and only then will you begin to understand what you’re getting yourself into with Kim Ki-Young’s The Housemaid.

The Housemaid is basically only male anxiety. Male anxiety about what would happen if women treated men like how men treat women (systemically not individually). Our main male character is technically in the position of power as a patriarch and a teacher, and when his power goes unchecked, his world is safe and normal. But as soon as a student is inappropriate to him, his grip on male power (specifically sexual dominance) disappears. He is the one being desired inappropriately. He is the one being assaulted. He is the object that one woman can give to another. The Housemaid is terrified of the power being flipped, even ending with the intention to quell its male audience’s fears about the film…

Part of March Around the World 2017 “Why did you lie?” “Your parents taught me how to.” For a certain stripe of cinephile, the “lost film” is something of an obsession, as demonstrated by Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation and its tireless restoration efforts. Figures vary as to how many movies have vanished—in 2013, the Library of Congress estimated that 75% of silent-era pictures have been permanently lost—but what is certain is that, between fires and wars and simple neglect, many films that were will never be again. It is a great loss, made all the greater for the unknowability of its breadth. Naturally not all, or even many, of these lost films would be gems—we may rest relatively assured that…

I only wanted to save my family from this living hell. How far would you go to keep your family together? This dark melodrama crams an entire soap opera into a single film that’s packed with more twists and turns than a bowl full of rat-poisoned noodles. Kim Ki-young directs the hell out of this story and keeps you guessing right to the end. Bong Joon-ho has said this was an influence on Parasite, and although it’s a very different story, you can certainly see the inspirational elements. You can’t simply overlook such indecent behavior. “don’t say his name or i’ll stab you.“ everyone say thank you to marty scorsese’s world cinema project for restoring this thrilling bad boy! kim ki-young‘s macabre and melodramatic study of the korean social structure provides plenty of suspense, keeping the audience on guard. toying with incredibly bold subjects for 1960, the housemaid centers on a piano composer, his family and their young, parasitic maid who poses an obstacle to their upper class endeavor for the perfect family picture. hailed as a korean classic, the director lays sexual politics and power dynamics as the groundwork for this morbidly sensual tale of manipulation. myung-sook, the love-struck housemaid is our fiery and passionate villainess. coming from nothing and utilizing the little leverage she…

must have been shocking when it first came out. there are some strong what ever happened to baby jane vibes (two years prior, too!) and likely cites hitchcock’s suspicion as an influence. i was impressed by a lot of it — the visual language with hands (the male lead is a piano teacher) and how successfully it turns into a nail biter of a thriller — but ultimately it feels like “sorry men are trash but it’s the woman’s fault for seducing/inviting the seducer into the home.” and trust me i usually love movies about women going mad. ps. 1960s korean sounds so weird it took me out of the acting pretty immediately too 35mm. K-GUST: The South Wrapping up my watch of Korean cinema with a film that has stayed with me years after I saw it for the first time back in 2020, I believe. More than anything, I was hoping it was still as great as I remember it to be. And to some major extent it is. The camerawork is fantastic, so dynamic and I loved the way Ki-young places the camera many times, heightening the psychological aspect of the film and a lot of times allowing us to get a better grasp of the performances with Eun-shim delivering such a powerhouse performance in her second role. Yes, it does sometimes fall into the over-the-top category, and the movie was certainly…

This is really good. It takes a while to get going, but when it gets going…whoa buddy. Great exploration of (the often mutually reinforcing) anxieties surrounding social class and sexuality in post-war Korea. You can really see the influence this must have had on the ‘New Korean Cinema’ movement of the 1990s and 2000s (especially Parasite). “You must never touch the piano”

“O que diz a lei sobre um homem que trai a esposa? Ás vezes, ele pega uma pena mais leve do que uma infração de trânsito. Assim que a esposa o perdoa, ele é absolvido” Tudo nesse filme é mega marcante, no início mostrando Mrs. Kim e Dong-sik Kim e seus 2 filhos eles parecem uma família comum e feliz. Mas ao longo do filme percebemos como o Dong-sik Kim é um homem sem atitudes o filme tenta te passar…

My perspective on this movie is that the man wants to save his family and the image in front of the society, and going at extreme level. The maid is represented as a parasite in the family, eating them alive from the inside. They made bad decision too, going to an extreme level with the housemaid, and concludes the film as it started as the reading the newspaper as just a story of someone. I know there are a lot of details in it, and I will explore them too, and I think my perspective will change for sure after watching it.

A good PSA about the living of men and women and a PSA to be careful when hiring someone to be your housemaid

I watched a video essay about Parasite that referenced this movie as a significant influence. This movie is far whackier and over the top than Parasite, especially in the performances. But I was still riveted and surprised by how far these characters were willing to go…all the way through the operatic ending. There are some surprisingly clever shots in the film, including one through a water glass that I found delightful.

A dashing young music teacher at an all-girl school hires an pretty, unstable, volatile rando friend of a student to be a maid for his family and HOLY JEEZ no one has a good time as a result. Very noir and American-influenced. Beautifully shot. Recently restored with the help of Martin Scorsese. It’s pretty lurid and gets a bit telenovela/soap opera in the home stretch but for 1960 this is really racy and wild. Some sexy, passionate, cruel, and scary…

This is why I love Korean cinema. The Housemaid from 1960 is a film that tells us to be careful about who you welcome into your home because the circumstances might turn out horribly. I’ve been wanting to watch this film for a long time now because I heard it was one of the greatest Korean films ever made, plus it influenced directors like Bong Joon Ho who praises this film. Now after watching it today, I can honestly say…

A sinister, nasty piece of business that is, no doubt, the cornerstone of the entire subgenre. Sweaty, claustrophobic, but also kinda funny? It’s real good.

Intense movie, sexual obsession and an intricate web of hatred take the front seat in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Kim. Very well directed which helps to keep you on the edge of your seat (as well as a very great performance from Lee Eun-shim). Fuckin’ insane movie, also what an ending lol, felt so jarring after everything that happened but I welcome it. Gooood movie, Korean cinema has rarely disappointed me.

While likely underseen in English-speaking countries, Kim Ki-Young’s HANYO (THE HOUSEMAID) is at least the spiritual predecessor to every domestic thriller with f**k-around husbands, corrupt wives, and brats growing up bad. Don’t be fooled by the 1960s-properness of the initial scenes of nice young ladies in girdled frocks. Much of the joy of this film lie in its no-holds-barred malevolence and dirty betrayals once the titular maid, Myung-sook (Eun-shim Lee), is installed in the Kim household and starts working everyone.…

Should’ve known this was going to be one of the most bizarre films I’ve ever seen when its restoration was sponsored by *checks notes* two luxury fashion brands and the government of Qatar. It’s frustrating, because it actually has a compelling premise at its core, but it chooses to make the most convoluted and nonsensical decisions with its plot at every available opportunity. Literally laughed out loud at least once every five minutes when the next bonkers event unfolded. Absolutely…

-Holy fuck: where has this been and why is it relegated to a box set rather than its own release? -If ever there was a key to Korean New Wave: this is it. Its literally a key to understanding the way the New Wave directors motivate their camera movement, their use of music, the blending of genre, the expressionist set design and lighting. The story itself is a direct takedown on class discrepancy and governmental strangulation. In short: this is…

As my 600th film I figured I’d pick something that was influential. Choosing the housemaid was an interesting choice, I don’t regret watching this move. The cinematography was interesting and I enjoyed parts of the story. I find that this movie killed real rats with poison to be grim, I find it to be a bit dragged out and messy at times, with a very common opinion of unlikeable characters, I didn’t root for any of these people and found…

Chronological Movie Marathon #300 Sincerely the most bafflingly underseen film I have ever watched, Housemaid would and should be considered a classic, one of the best and most ahead of its time horror films ever made. Thirteen years before Texas Chainsaw Massacre or The Exorcist; Kim Ki-Young made a masterpiece of melodrama and terror, about a pathetic evil, a weak evil, but an evil that never leaves you. Like a plague she hovers, through thick and thin she is there,…
