I’ve no time for sanitised bullshit like this, especially if it’s going to take up 2.5 hours of my life. The Help is such an obvious white saviour narrative, and it’s one of those usual centrist awards bait films, liberal enough to highlight inequality but conservative in that it pretends racism and exploitation ended in the 1960s. At least Green Book was an amusing film and openly about friendship more than any other serious issue. The Help actively tries to put front and centre its message that racism is bad, but features two (2!) scenes where white women are peer-pressured into firing a black servant and we’re meant to sympathise with them because they feel bad about it. There’s also…

- Aibileen Clark is a middle-aged African-American maid who has spent her life raising white children and has recently lost her only son; Minny Jackson is an African-American maid who has often offended her employers despite her family's struggles with money and her desperate need for jobs; and Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan is a young white woman who has recently moved back home after graduating college to find out her childhood maid has mysteriously disappeared. These three stories intertwine to explain how life in Jackson, Mississippi revolves around "the help"; yet they are always kept at a certain distance because of racial lines.
