All you need to know is that Liam Neeson calls a wolf a motherfucker and punches it repeatedly in the face.

I thought this would be Taken with Wolves. What it is though is a big-budget art film about impeding death. This film has the perfect ending and is one of the best films I’ve seen this year.

I’m not sure why I couldn’t get on board with The Grey, I appreciate what Joe Carnagan was trying to do but it felt slow and extremely cliche. They were kind of just running from wolves the whole time, so as a survival film it hit all the bases it had to (cliff, river, storm, people being killed off in x y z way), but I was never as riveted as I would expect from something in this genre. It’s very overtly primal/masculine and I enjoyed how their dynamic started to mirror that of the wolf packs, but otherwise the emotional beats weren’t bringing anything new to the table. Liam Neeson though is magnetic and the moments where we were…

Damn, this one knocked the wind out of me. I expected to see a well-crafted action flick and I did. What I didn’t expect was that it would be intelligent as well. The storyline isn’t really original, but it’s what is between the lines that makes this film extraordinary. This isn’t merely a story about survival, it’s also about what gives people their purpose in life. It asks questions about faith and doesn’t provide any easy answers. At the centre of all this is Neeson’s character. This is by far the best performance I have seen from Neeson. His character is burdened, on the brink of death and really doesn’t have anything to live for (the reason for this only…

This is so much more than just men killing wolves . . this is so much more . . A man’s unrelenting hope for survival and his basic discontent and displeasure with God. Liam Neeson screams in anger”Fuck faith, earn it.” I would give 4 stars for that alone.

Revisited THE GREY with my oldest son. I don’t know what it is about this movie that I find so haunting and affecting, but it remains one of my favorites. Joe Carnahan’s film is BLEAK, and feels like a simple enough story about a group of plane crash survivors pursued by wolves, but there is something else at work here that I find very profound. Perhaps the film’s nihilism is masking something else; perhaps the survival story is more complicated than it seems. It is a meditation about the inevitability of death, and the different ways we choose to meet it – assuming there is any choice in the matter at all. Certain moments (such as a man sitting on…

one of the most savage and unrelenting films i’ve ever seen — man against nature, man against himself, man against god, raging against a world which insists upon destroying him and all that he knows. simple, pristine, powerful — a visceral treatise on what it takes to survive in the face of impossible odds. live and die on this day, on all days.

An Analysis Why would a man, whose had his entire existence stripped down until there is almost nothing left (a man seriously contemplating suicide) end up fighting for his very survival? INTRODUCTION From the first shot, director Joe Carnahan signals the immensity of nature. The camera pans across trees and mountains using a low shot. Clouds slowly drift across. Wolves howl. No humans. No evidence of civilization. Then, the camera cuts to an oil refinery. Pipes and smokestacks replace the trees, the mountains with buildings. Smoke replaces the clouds; the sounds of machinery replace the wolf howls. Humanity has entered the wild and now attempts to tame it. In the film’s commentary, Carnahan said that “there aren’t many industries that…

Action! – Smokin’ Joe & The Team Carnahan Joe Carnahan’s masterpiece is still among the best survival thrillers ever filmed. Reason being, unlike most films of its type, which tend to focus more on action, this one is nearly entirely concerned with the survival elements. It’s a battle between two creatures, with one giving in to its baser desires to consume and destroy, and the other collapsing into existential emptiness and madness in the face of death. And I think the existentialism, the struggle against death even when it seems like the greatest option, the inability to hear the voice of God, and the overwhelming sense of isolation are key elements that set this picture apart from others and make it…

Intense, atmospheric, thrilling, well directed and incredibly well acted (this legit might be the best performance I’ve seen from Neeson and yes, that’s counting Schindler’s List). A chilling and riveting watch from start to finish.

Cineaugust #15 I decided to put on the commentary track because I thought it would be a little boring and it actually made me appreciate The Grey a lot more. Those drunk scumbags are really passionate about their little film that you’ve probably never even heard about. Apparently, they hated one actor but didn’t specify who. Genuinely impressive at times and visually very great, especially everything shot in the dark. Perfect winter movie. This is what The Revenant was trying to be. The Revenant just wanted it too much.

It seems like not a lot of ladies on this flight. I found this movie incredibly boring. I was uninterested in the characters and had a hard time paying attention. Maybe I was in the wrong head space for it, I don’t know.

Ironis, memang. Sementara satu persatu orang…
