I try not to get too political on here, but for those of you who ramble on about the innacuracies of this film I encourage you to do some research into the actions of Green Berets during this conflict. This is a very realistic (well maybe not the weird spy op at the end, which is also why this is only 4*) film about how they fought the war in Vietnam. The VC did murder tribes people who worked with the US, the media did lie and obfuscate the truth about the war and of NVA and VC atrocities while overblowing our own. Vietnam was a dirty war, there’s no doubt. But most if not all of those negative actions…

“Hold up soldier” No wait John that doesn’t sound right!!! “Hold up you dirty pilgrim” Now thats the JW we all love and know. He directed this film and starred in it but really should have stayed behind the camera to hide from shame and embarrassment. This was just awful! Nothing felt like it was taken serious and the entire build up waiting for the battle scene was a complete bore fest. I can see what JW was trying to portray to the world but he should have done serious and tried to make the characters more liked. I recently watched a JW film with a very young Ron Howard and in this we have a young George Takei. Don’t think JW would get away with walking towards the sunset holding a boy’s hand in these days!

Notorious for being just about the worst movie John Wayne ever made (either this or The Conqueror) and for being a shameless pro-Vietnam War propaganda piece, the bigger problem with The Green Berets is that it’s not just a vile work of propaganda, but a deathly boring one. Frankly, nothing that happens in this movie is interesting or entertaining, since it’s hardly any fun in the way a proper flag-waving film like this should be. What I’d want for this to be is a shoot ’em up war flick with Wayne and co. mowing down bad guys but what it is instead is a 142-minute slog with little action, unfunny comedy, and dull characters. That makes the childlike way it…

Films I Watched On TV While I Was ‘Working’ I should have just watched this for 2 hours. Its reputation for being awful stretches before it like a motorway of poo, and justifiably so. I’d heard how this was a shameless propaganda piece many times but I never normally let that sort of thing bother me, so I was just hoping that I would get some decent action scenes out of it. But no. The thing about The Green Berets is that it’s ridiculously boring bearing in mind what kind of film it is. Considering its anti-Viet Cong stance, I was expecting to be treated to John Wayne and the boys gunning down hundreds of VC and maybe coming out…

Regardless of what you thought about America’s involvement in South East Asia, the fact that John Wayne, pardon the pun, “stuck to his guns”, in his support for his country’s participation in a war that nobody wanted, showed just what a commie-bashing, Berkley-hating, conservative Republican he really was. For years he was the epitome of that strong iconic American masculinity, but it was a joke advert I saw once that summed up Wayne for me in a nutshell. It was for John Wayne toilet paper, “It’s rough! It’s tough! And it doesn’t take shit off anyone”. That was Wayne for me, a stubborn man who didn’t move with the times and kept his own values and ideals, long after some…

This makes LSD look like aspirin! There is nothing more glorious than dying in a pointless war and having a shithouse named after you. The first half is almost unwatchable but later on the action gets pretty nuts. There’s even a scene that Nolan totally stole for The Dark Knight

🇹🇭🇱🇦🇰🇭🇻🇳It’s A Southeast Asian Summer!🇮🇩🇲🇾🇸🇬🇵🇭 It’s a John Wayne vehicle, and he co-directed, so it’s a given the politics are rancid. Its morality is unaltered from the outdated westerns Wayne made his name with, exchanging the good guy cowboys and savage Indians with the righteous US Army and the evil communist Viet Cong. And don’t think Wayne was unprepared for the critical response, he was careful to include an African American sergeant in the Army group to plausibly deny this…

A lousy, ham fisted war flick meant to sell Vietnam to an America that was already tired of its sons dying over there. While it’s got some cool gadgets and the action scenes are very entertaining, it’s undercut by stilted acting, over-the-top death throes and comedically cheap special effects. Proudly produced in full cooperation with the US Military!

“We had to destroy the village in order to liberate it.” Released in the early-ish stages of our involvement and during one of the most tumultuous periods (1968j) in American culture, The Green Berets has a reputation as one of the most jingoistic, politically naive, right-wing, pro-war movies ever made. In fact, star/co-director John Wayne, whose old fashioned values and rigid masculinity were increasingly out of touch, explicitly made the movie to promote our illegal involvement in Vietnam and counter…

Marion Morrison, wearing his bullet repellent invisible vest, directs his men through hellish landscapes in Vietnam, before carrying out a stealth kidnap mission that would flatter a heist movie of today’s standards. ’68 feels like the year for long and underwhelming war movies, but this is better than some.

I think that people get lost in the myth and mob mentality of The Green Berets. It is not a great movie but too many people miss the point. John Wayne’s Vietnam film goes exactly how you’d expect. The North Vietnamese are murdering rapists, and communists are evil. Most characters are paper thin. The film is also divided into two almost separate parts: i) building and defense of an outpost, ii) the capturing of an enemy commander behind the lines. The two sections do not fit well together, besides the fact that The Green Berets are picked for the mission (the film does a poor job of showing why these special forces are special). The film was shot in Georgia, which is a poor stand-in for Vietnam. A deciduous forest does not a jungle make.

While watching this blatant pro-Vietnam war propaganda piece co-directed by and starring John Wayne, though, I was glad to have watched this at home, because if I had been in a cinema, my constant groaning would probably have annoyed the people around me so much that there would have been a real chance it could have led to me being thrown out of screening.

If you must make a pro Vietnam war move (I don’t recommend you do) it’s probably not a good idea to have it directed and acted by a racist, war dodging pathetic Nazi. John Wayne was a Nazi, and this is a terrible movie. David Janssen had a severe argument with John Wayne on the set of the production because Wayne lost his temper with an Asian child during the shooting. Janssen left the set, which he never did before in his career.

Nogen af scenerne er også meget søde med soldaten og drengen. Et eksempel på at man troede (nogen gør stadig) at nogen befolkningsgrupper ikke er lige så kloge og er hvid mands byrde. No, The Green Berets isn’t the most nuanced Vietnam movie ever made. It isn’t trying to be. This is John Wayne planting his flag firmly on one side of the debate and telling a story about the soldiers he believed were doing a difficult and necessary job. I’ve always been a fan of John Wayne. At his best, he had an undeniable screen presence—commanding, effortless, and uniquely American. Whether in westerns or war pictures, Wayne often understood exactly who he was and what audiences came to see. Which is what makes The Green Berets all the more disappointing. For a man who gave so much of himself to this project, co-directing and shaping its message so heavily, this stands as one of his least successful efforts. The…

Often cited as one of the worst films of the 1960s and misguided propaganda revolving around Vietnam, The Green Berets is actually not that terrible. John Wayne is actually more bearable than usual and the film seems more about the philosophy behind it. Vietnam Research Film Review Before the war was over, before we saw the issues, John Wayne made the top gun of his time. Except it was to prove to the public that the American involvement in Vietnam was good and wholesome. They were never offensive in the war. Only defensive, to help the small villagers. They never shot first. Defend the poor and innocent people. That’s why they were there and were doing what the communist countries were doing first. One of the greatest films ever made. Outstanding performances and an excellent story. Plenty of action and great pacing for a film over two hours. Only gripe is the setting, didn’t look like Vietnam at all. John Wayne gives his typical performance but the real shining stars are George Takei, Raymond St Jacques, and Aldo Ray. It’s so refreshing watching a I don’t want to say pro Vietnam war film but one that took an honest look at it and wasn’t just anti war slop like what was so typical in the 70’s and 80’s.

« Out here, due process is a bullet. » If you like a quite slow and long war movie, I recommend it. And if you want to cry, I REALLY recommend it. I really liked that all along the movie, the was a journalist that was with them. At the start, he was against this war but we do understand that at the end, his point of view had changed since he saw from his eyes what war was really like. The end is heartbreaking, I didn’t thought that Sgt. Petersen would die and that Hamchunk would be all alone…

This is not a great movie, but I like it because my dad took me to see it when I was a child. John Wayne was way too old at 60 to be in this type of movie. A 60-year old man walking around the jungles of Vietnam still boggles the mind.

This trash heap makes the fake Vietnam War movie they’re making in the beginning of Tropic Thunder look like Apocalypse Now. This was WAY too long, terribly acted, and super boring.

This movie was really eye opening about the Vietnam War bc it does do a good job of explaining the life of a soldier from the American perspective but it doesn’t even try to hide the ponging stench of war propaganda!!!!! The Green Berets is pro war piece of propaganda, it is a dishonest simplistic depiction that removed the moral complexities of the Vietnam War, lacking honesty, compassion, or realistic portrayal, instead of relying on cliches. The film failed to represent soldiers as complex individuals. The film offered no genuine insight or compassion, instead presenting generic, cliched war sequences that felt detached from the actual Vietnam experience. The film presented a simple black and white view of the conflict, failing to acknowledge the ethical dilemmas of political nuances, reducing it to good guys versus bad guys.

With the exception of 2000’s rather embarrassingly earnest We Were Soldiers, John Wayne’s The Green Berets has the distinction of being the only Hollywood film about the Vietnam War that is unapologetically pro-war. The reality is that nothing it says is particularly misjudged or beguilingly odd; it just feels the approach is wrong from the off. Wayne’s unapologetic pride in the troops isn’t necessarily off-putting but his approach as a director (he co-directed the film with Ray Kellogg) is to…

This is a D+ rating. This movie depicts a Vietnam War unlike any other depiction I have ever seen. John Wayne’s vision of it seem anachronistic, better suited to holding the Alamo, or some World War One action. Officers are seen as action heros with their sleeves rolled up. Lives are shattered on both sides with a wooden ‘whatever’ sort of feeling. It’s indicative of the unbalance of this movie—that the saddest moment to me is when the innocent dog dies.

The acting is rather mediocre, and aside from George Takei (!), there’s not a lot to really discuss with this. The film’s central issue ultimately lies within its pacing. It’s very obvious John Wayne is having a lot of fun here, it’s just a shame he wasn’t as good at doing blatant propaganda as John Ford was. This is very blunt, telling the audience ‘communism bad, capitalism good’, while Ford was very good at saying ‘🇺🇸AMERICA, FUCK YEAH!🇺🇸’ while also making genuinely brilliant movies. ‘She Wore a Yellow Ribbon’ was little more than propaganda for America, but that was also a genuinely brilliant movie at its core; this is actively a bad movie, and one that runs around with ‘fuck them commies’ sharpies on its face for over two hours.

Jumps between cringy, narmy, and sometimes entertaining. The best moments are when it stops trying to be propaganda like the field base battle or the character building but they only happen sparingly. It’s not that good of a military movie, propaganda or not, for its time and still isn’t Overall it’s a middling movie that has value in it being a very early Vietnam movie and a look into propaganda.
