I had only seen the Steve McQueen motorcycle scene before, and I’d seen that dozens of times because whenever that part was on TV my dad would call me in to watch it. Now that I’ve finally seen the whole thing, Dad why didn’t you get me to watch the rest?! The whole thing is great!

One of the classic procedure films, war films, ensemble films, adventure films, suspense films, quotable films, you name it, The Great Escape is probably all these things and more. It’s also a period film, beautifully detailed and accurate. The simplicity of locations and absence of culturally dated references help age the timelessness of the story as gracefully as anything from the era. This is probably why it was a childhood staple because even as a child of the 90s, this thing had me enthralled for almost 3 hours.

“Meanwhile, we dig.” Lean, Ford, Spielberg, Wyler and Kurosawa stand tall among directors who understood the ephemeral essence of camaraderie and group dynamics; how they can never be felt as deeply or expressed as efficiently as they can be through a single composition. John Sturges understood this innately, as demonstrated in The Magnificent Seven, Bad Day at Black Rock and perhaps most notably in his genre defining WWII prisoners of war epic, The Great Escape. It’s a film to be studied for its relentless juxtaposition of triumph and tragedy, it’s brilliant use of thematic, melodic, orchestral score and the bygone texture of its widescreen photography (much of which is comprised of three wall sets). While it’s easy to assume the…

A great movie about the human pursuit of freedom! It’s a bit glorified like many old American movies, but that’s a part of its charm!

Sturges’ unpretentious and ruthless economy aimed squarely at a sprawling caper film. Maybe his best movie.

McQueen was great and all, but Rick Dalton is Rick fucking Dalton. Don’t you forget that. Huge misstep by the casting team.

Many of my favorite movies are about how being behind enemy lines during World War 2 would have been fun and the essential class vs swag dichotomy between British and American officers. What a cast. What a picture.

ABSOLUTE CINEMA. There are so many great things about this movie I don’t even know where to start. The cast is insane they somehow manage to flesh out multiple characters in the first half of the movie so by the third act you already care about them. Perhaps some of the best pacing I’ve ever seen. Soundtrack is impeccable albeit some songs are a lil too upbeat for what’s going on but hey that’s war baby. Really impressive that they…

Personalmente, es una película decente, no es mala, tampoco es extraordinaria. Cumple lo prometido, pero después de tres horas no me ha dejado con absolutamente nada

A very human war movie. Constantly shifting tones but very subtlety.

A great vintage movie from a WW2 setting. I love all the acting and most of the important characters felt really alive. Each had their own story and fate.

AHHH! TOM! DICK! AND HARRY! GOAT! Those tunnel names were honestly one of my favorite things about this movie! I really enjoyed the whole idea of these prisoners secretly planning and working together to escape. Steve McQueen was SO cool as Hilts, and the movie had some genuinely exciting moments! Some parts had me sitting there like AHHH! WHAT ARE THEY DOING?! But honestly, it was a little too long for me, and I didn’t love everything about it. Still, I had a good time watching it, coolie-shoolie!

Steve McQueen on a bike it’s… What a man ! I hope my myopia won’t become like Colin’s… Escape becomes a kind of philosophy. What I find particularly successful about The Great Escape is that it achieves something quite rare : it manages to be an incredibly entertaining film while also telling a deeply human story. There is adventure, humor, thrilling pursuits, tunnels, and Elmer Bernstein’s extraordinary score, but behind all of this lies a much more profound idea : a person can be deprived of their physical freedom without ever accepting the loss of their inner freedom.

Good lord this was phenomenal. Like an actual perfect film from start to finish. Insane cast had me looking up all of them and recognizing a handful of them. The music slaps. The visuals are so damn good for 1963. The story was so compelling and you could feel like tension. The humor hit for me especially the bunk bed scene. Love me some mountain shots or European city shots. Every shot of the boys out of prison were glorious.…

Watching a 3h long movie is a great achievement for me. I didn’t think I’d enjoy this..50min in and I was reluctant to continue BUT what a reward that I did. The movie slowly escalates from “ugh” to “please let them be free”. Around the 2nd hour, I was super invested and I cared for these men. Long live resistance, in all its forms, everywhere.

The Great Escape is a true American classic, but is it a great film on its own? It’s solid, but it’s maybe a little short of being an all-timer. The cast is uniformly great, and no two main characters feel the same. The dialogue bits, which make up most of the film, range from watchable to really interesting, actually. Some characters are definitely more entertaining than others, but once the escape plot actually gets going, things really start moving. However,…

- Synopsis
- The Nazis, exasperated at the number of escapes from their prison camps by a relatively small number of Allied prisoners, relocate them to a high-security 'escape-proof' camp to sit out the remainder of the war. Undaunted, the prisoners plan one of the most ambitious escape attempts of World War II. Based on a true story.
