剧情简介

The plane carrying wealthy Charles Morse crashes down in the Alaskan wilderness. Together with the two other passengers, photographer Robert and assistant Stephen, Charles devises a plan to help them reach civilization. However, his biggest obstacle might not be the elements, or even the Kodiak bear stalking them -- it could be Robert, whom Charles suspects is having an affair with his wife and would not mind seeing him dead.

“Today, I’m gonna kill the mother fucker.” A miracle movie. To a certain generation of children of the 90s, this wasn’t just another overblown action adventure. It was a movie bible. There are certain things that are inherently cinematic no matter how poorly you present it. Planes. Trains. Waterfalls. Mountains. Bears. Tony Hopkins saying, “mother fucker.” These things inherently make compelling drama. Throw in some spicy Mamet dialogue and an absolutely massive, rousing Goldsmith score, and you’ve unlocked the key to my heart.

Out of the many genres that made a big impact on the 90s, somehow, someway, survival thrillers and overblown action films found their way into this decade and built their own niche. The Alec Baldwin/Anthony Hopkins starrer is almost a rare beast of its own, as it follows many of the tropes known by the genre while adding some twists and turns along the way that makes it stand out. Lee Tamahori’s does a great job balancing the drama and the “action” sequences (read: animal fighting) in a way where one feels tight to each other instead of two different movies. David Mamet’s theatre sensibilities can be felt throughout the script, especially on its approach to the style of the…

I miss 90’s multiplex filler so much—this was a fuckin’ HOOT! The David Mamet script perfectly blends doofy ‘eccentric millionaire’ musings with its well-worn (but comfy) 90s survival/action cliches. Alec Baldwin is well cast as the conniving schmuck friend and… has Anthony Hopkins ever played a character who’s not heavily coded as autistic? His low-simmer, deadpan camp performance as the 60-year-old, rich white guy survivalist carries the whole movie. Bart the Bear gets first billing over the end credits—well deserved! What a good boy!

“Because today— I’m gonna kill the motherfucker!” THE EDGE is a highly underrated thriller, Lee Tamahori beautifully absorbing film is the ultimate journey of survival. It’s a surprisingly moving picture that knows when to be quiet, and when to scare the shit out of an audience. It skillfully exploit genre conventions, but it’s the clever writing & performances that sets it apart from other survival stories. The action sequences are incredibly tense & suspenseful. And as with all of David Mamet’s work, the dialogue is flawless. The scenery is beautiful and expertly shot by Donald M. McAlpine. Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin are incredible, and their chemistry is great. Plus. Bart the Bear. Hopkins as Charles Morse gives one of his finest performance & brings to life a great character. The moment towards the third act when he fully realizes that truth is understated—and heartbreaking.

the quiet conservative fantasy of purification through violence, interrupted by the merest suggestion of contested domesticity/femininity. tamahori’s craning camera is intoxicated by these mountains and forests and pushes the grandeur way beyond the remit of what a survivalist film demands, and the blunt mamet dialogue somehow seems ostentatious in the midst of so much nature — the 90s of it all demands a real bear & real locations to tell a tale that would fit snugly in the pages of a 1910s boys adventure magazine. classy stuff.

I really am a sucker for these wilderness survival movies. This was no exception. The setting was stunning. Plenty of gripping thrills. I loved Alec Baldwin and Anthony Hopkins as the leads. It dragged on a bit by the end but overall a lot of fun.

Bart The Bear most captivating role! Never has Bart left me in such suspense and anxiety. Bart The Bear’s talents should be studied by the next generation of animal actors. Also, Anthony Hopkins killing a bear looks all too easy.

“Needing people…isn’t it a bitch?” or “They died saving my life.” Mamet’s cold-sober but characteristically conservative (one thing he has never been about anything is ambivalent) treatise on class divisions. Only barely disguised as a kick-ass adventure story about three dudes trying to simultaneously floridly decipher their masculinity and figure out if they’re gonna get the bear or vice-versa. I guess four dudes if you count yon aforementioned bear. A real blast.

I know I’ve said it before… but the 90s were really such a treasure trove for film, especially in the wilderness action/thriller genre. While I really enjoyed the film, I think the bear was my favorite. I looked up some information about him and found out he’s pretty much *the* bear used in film. His name is Bart and he’s starred in a ton of films as well as numerous tv shows. Some most notable films besides The Edge are 12 Monkeys, Legends of the Fall, Homeward Bound, The Great Outdoors. He also starred in The Bear which resulted in an Oscar nomination for Bart – this was unable to go forward because animal actors are excluded from receiving Academy Awards. (Kinda bullshit) I’m also so happy that he has his own Letterboxd profile. He unfortunately passed in 2000, but he seems like he was best guy.

Surprisingly agile adventure thriller finds billionaire Anthony Hopkins and his employee Alec Baldwin crashlanded in the middle of the Rockies, fighting for survival whilst underneath it all lies a simmering tension that the latter is banging the former’s model wife. The stunning Canadian backdrops are not the usual place you’d expect to hear terse Mametspeak, but it works well in the capable hands of our two leading men. For all the beauty of Donald McAlpine’s photography and the majesty of Jerry Goldsmith’s score, it’s the men’s terrifying encounters with a bear that you remember the most.

I’ve seen this film so many times and it still holds up. Sure it’s a bit of over the top acting from two powerhouses but it’s tense and funny and genuinely thrilling. Bart the Bear was the standout of course, with the scenery coming in second.

The Edge aka “Jaws With Claws” aka “wait, this isn’t a U2 documentary?” A great wilderness survival flick, and the kind of mid-budget character-driven thriller that doesn’t get made anymore. It’s also a monster movie. With a 100% real monster. I chuckled reading the anecdote that Hopkins “acknowledged and respected (Bart) like a fellow actor”. The mental image of Hopkins treating an enormous bear with the same professional courtesy and distinctly English elegance he’d afford a fellow actor is pretty…

This movie always has me on teh edge of my seat and while I’m not really rooting for anyone I love hate all the characters. Alec Baldwin is honestly the best part of the movie because he is so awful he almost circles back to being lovable. The scenery is also a plus.

Baldwin and Hopkins were perfectly cast; Harold Perrineau was also great, he should be in more movies. I’m always complaining about runtimes but this should’ve been ten to fifteen minutes shorter. A quick 90-95 minutes would’ve been perfect because after a while, even when the dialogue is well written and the plot is occasionally broken up with moments of excitement, watching people wander around in nature does get a bit dull. It almost gets four stars but there’s a few storytelling and filmmaking elements that hold it back.
