Pure product of its moment, the late-2000s “torture porn” cycle compressed into a single-location chamber piece. One house, one architect of suffering, nowhere to run. For the most part it worked. The film commits fully to spatial claustrophobia, turning every room into an opportunity for creative mutilation (such as razor blades opening Arkin’s hands and a nail driven through the daughter’s eye), practical effects doing genuinely upsetting work. The Collector himself has enough presence as a figure to anchor the horror even when the plot has nothing new left to give. But there’s only so many ways one house can kill people, eventually it runs out of ideas, so shock value fills the gap. As I said, unmistakably 2000s in its DNA (a slur or two, some sexual/bizarre shots). One last thing: the opening credits are the best part.

By the end I was getting bored and exhausted of the same vibes and layout of the house, still, nice premise for a killer, but no idea how he could set up those absurd and crazy traps. Nice gore, 0 characters and just mediocre acting, there is nothing on that front. Was fun and there are some crazy kills and ideas but not much, it works

Thank goodness that this was not accepted as a Saw prequel. It’s actually astonishing that the writers were responsible for the screenplays for Saws 4 & 5. The writing in this movie is awful. There’s extensive animal gore, the writers forget how electricity works, and the protagonist calls the villain a slur multiple times. I watched this while eating dinner and was actually distracted looking at my food. That’s how boring this film is. It even has the audacity to have a post credit scene.

The Collector follows a man named Arkin O’Brien breaking into his new employer’s country home to steal a rare gem and pay off his wife’s dangerous debt, only to find a masked serial killer has already rigged the house with lethal traps and imprisoned the family. The amount of traps in this movie feels like everything is a trap, and this movie has good gore, and a good plot with a Serial killer who planted traps all around the house and has people in boxes he brings to the house, also the reveal of Arkin’s family in the house including his daughter is unnerving.

Un home invasion che riesce a distinguersi grazie alla sua idea particolarmente sadica: una casa trasformata in una gigantesca trappola mortale. L’atmosfera è claustrofobica e il Collector è un antagonista inquietante, soprattutto perché non viene spiegato troppo e rimane volutamente misterioso. Le trappole sono elaborate e spesso parecchio cattive, con alcune morti davvero memorabili. La storia è semplice e presenta qualche forzatura, ma il film mantiene una buona tensione e riesce a essere efficace senza bisogno di complicare troppo la trama.

Home Alone meets Saw That was VERY good. I wasn’t expecting that at all. I was on edge for nearly the whole film and kept shouting at the screen! I very nearly gave this 4 stars, and I probably would have if it wasn’t for the ENORMOUS plot hold at the beginning and the fact that the cat died 😡

How did the main guy even get inside the house without bumping into a boobytrap 😭 To me, this movie was mostly just mindless gore and over the top special effects.. I really had higher hopes for this movie. I really hoped it would have more of a story 😔 The effect they had for the shiny eyes was cool though!! It was like shining a light on a wild animal in the woods, or when you take a picture of someone in the dark with the flash on!

I genuinely can’t remember the last time a mask made me this uncomfortable. The way The Collector moves is absolutely bizarre, and that upside-down shot from Jill’s perspective is incredible. The sound design deserves a special mention too, it makes every little movement and noise feel so much more unsettling. I also loved how the film makes you care about Arkin and genuinely root for him. He’s such an easy character to sympathize with, and that made the whole experience even more intense. Really nasty and tense.

There’s a constant tense energy to the cat and mouse house of horrors nonsense. A killer with utterly unknowable methods. He sets up a dozen elaborate booby traps that under normal circumstances would mostly go untriggered? Baffling. I was completely engaged. The best of the post 9/11 torture porn wave. Directed with the sauce that misguided fools think the Saw franchise has.

Esta película la vi gracias a la página de Facebook de cinéfilos que sigo. Y la verdad está bastante decente. Las muertes estuvieron bien, la mejor para mí fue la de las trampas para osos y todo eso de que la casa estuviera llenísima de más trampas fue algo exagerado jajaja me pregunto en qué perro momento instaló todo eso jajaja 😂 😅 Por otra parte los personajes no me podrían importar menos, es más ni la niña me ganó el corazón. This was wild, Kate picked this and I needed it off my watchlist and she has seen it, this was nuts. This gives Hostel vibes with the gore and Saw with the color grading and edits. Arkin(Josh Stewart) was great definitely had that dog in him. The collector I called who it was gonna be ngl. The bear trap was brutal, and so was the razors in the window. This was very 2009, very post-Saw era horror. Honestly, not a bad genre flick overall though. The setting and basic premise are different enough that it stands out a bit from the other Hostel-adjacent torture p*rn movies from the era. That said, the movie loses a lot of steam in Act II. The traps start to feel less scary and more like obvious plot devices. Also, the “cat-in-peril played for laughs” trope rears its ugly head here in a way I really didn’t love, but unfortunately those were just the times. Easily skippable honestly.
