“Look at you. All back of the bus and shit.” One of the dorkiest, most conceptually tin-eared things ever, sort of a bro’d out Edgar Rice Burroughs. But hell if it isn’t committed, and at least it has the good sense to be both relentlessly happening at you and bafflingly stupid, not to mention the killer final moments. Burns through plot like a gas explosion, and absolutely bursts with esoteric design and outlandish characters; there’s a massive, occasionally downright gorgeous and deeply silly universe crammed into every little corner here. You can easily imagine Twohy and Vin Diesel hanging out after a long day of D&D, their faces plastered with the beaming smiles of proud fathers as they watch their personal, unreleased 4 1/2 hour cut of this. To call it kind of awesome is probably an overstatement, but it’s definitely a kind of awesome.

at one point, the antagonist rips a man’s soul out of his body and the camera shows the eyes of this cursed being as he realises that not even his god can save him from extinction. that’s not even the wildest thing in this fucking insane testament to space opera madness and glorious explosions on wild looking planet. blind Vin Diesel goes full beast mode for the entire runtime, evil Karl Urban has very aggressive sex with his wife Thandie Newton, Vin Diesel utters the line “a whole lot of Necro firepower” there are weird knight androids who fight on a cosmic desert wasteland for the sake of intergalactic religious fascism, nothing really makes much sense at all, the lore…

fuck yeah dude. this kind of stuff shits all over the deadly whedon snark plague thats infected big budget genre movies. (its healthy for my mind and how i think about art to turn this into a culture war) vin diesel is the doofiest mary sue, his tough guy outfit is a wifebeater and swim goggles, he has cool deadite eyes and he can tame alien wolves by just staring them down. plus he can do flips and make big explosions and he’s the chosen one and he throws knives and stabs people 🙂 this movie has it all, it’s got soul-stealing intergalactic baddies in chainmail and skull armor, a volcano planet called crematoria, judi dench as some kind of…

It’s wild that the response to Pitch Black being a small sci-fi horror hit was to make the next one a $100M epic space opera that feels like part of a completely different series. There’s arguably too much going on here but something about this ridiculously dense world is fascinating, it’s clear there’s so much love put into this which kinda offsets how silly and vaguely confusing the whole thing is. Riddick killing someone with a tea cup is amazing.

I honestly could not tell you what happens in the second act of this movie other than it fucking ripped. Riddick rules, all hail the new emperor of the Necromongers.

A huge mess that feels like I’m dropping into someone’s RPG campaign 3/4s of the way through. It’s like DUNE, CONAN, MACBETH, a prison escape, and a sequel to PITCH BLACK all got together and threw a sloppy party. I love it so. I’d have paid admission to witness the terrified faces of the studio execs during the scripting, production and release phase.

You probably wouldn’t believe how many times I’ve seen this. There’s a part where he puts his goggles on just so he can dramatically take them off again a few seconds later. It’s awesome.

I sort of love the idea that Diesel et. al. decided that after introducing Riddick as a tough dude who can see in the dark, they’d then reveal in this movie that actually he’s the savior of the entire universe and the last member of a once mighty alien race. Naturally, Diesel chooses to play that guy as a really obnoxious personal trainer; constantly flexing and posing in tight shirts that show off his big muscles, and occasionally yelling things like “Get that ass moving!” at his allies. I don’t love the movie at all, but I love that idea.

vin diesel’s self-image as the last great auteur actor, carefully cultivating an esoteric brand of genre dorkiness that both endears and alienates contemporary audiences & critics. the chronicles of riddick is perhaps the apex of diesel’s twin desires to both make big-budget mass entertainment and to indulge in an illustration of his offbeat scifi/fantasy obsessions gleamed via tabletop RPG campaigns, anime and videogames. while dominic toretto is diesel’s most famous archetype, one could easily claim that riddick is the role that truly codifies diesel’s strengths as a performer: his burly physique, the growled baritones, the dreadfully sincere yet still playful tone, the literal animistic magnetism, and especially the pouty rugged distance that makes him not always a strict audience surrogate, but…

Nothing at all like Pitch Black. But the world building is so interesting. The Necromongers are so strange and because they’re left somewhat mysterious, they don’t lose their intrigue. There’s still some silly dialogue, and Jack is still obnoxious, but the movie is still an enjoyable watch.

The Chronicles of Riddick isn’t a bad film. It’s more a victim of an overloaded script and oversized ambitions. I find it hard to recall a more self-important hero than Riddick. And while watching this movie, I don’t see a character — I see the “great and terrible” Vin Diesel with a massively inflated ego. Maybe I just don’t like this actor and have never been into his work. I can’t help but single out the Necromongers and everything connected…

Pitch Black doesn’t feel like it exists in the same universe. There are times in this when Riddick will leap around like gravity doesn’t apply to him, at one point he uses a magic blast from the power of remembrance of his Furyan heritage, to wipe out all the bad guys. Riddick is a great character, and the Pitch Black universe could have been pretty cool if they adopted it like a grounded sci-fi place. But instead they went the fantastic over-the-top route and lost what could have been.

The visuals and vibe of this movie are so cool but the plots just kinda boring

I mean….they went for it. They had ambition and did what they did. Was it my thing? Not really. I enjoyed this most during the prison section and wished it was the whole movie. It’s a huge leap from the self contained first movie. I guess I respect it though it looks dated at times.

revendo agora com mais atenção, subiu um pouco na minha avaliação em comparação com a vez anterior, mas não significa muito. Esse é o típico filme com uma premissa boa, que quando é assistido, se percebe o potencial desperdiçado.

I have a soft spot for this one. The names of everything are cheesy and on the nose but I like the action. Riddick and Karl Urban doing pro wrestler finishing moves was a choice. Dame Judi Dench and Thandie Newton are wonderful. I liked the whole arc on Crematoria and the costume design for the Necromongers. What a fun blast from the past. Now Karl Urban is in every sci-fi franchise.

“It’s been a long time since I smelled beautiful.” They tried so hard to be edgy. The ending was so dramatic.

Whoever came up with the lore for this universe did not deserve this campy script

Win Diesel gets royalties for every brooding edgelord character. The Chronicles of Riddick gets 8 Win Diesel saved on the budget by using his own Spelljammer ships out of 10 Win Diesel really did roll straight 18s

Open Matte Version from Arrow (which looks incredible – better than when I saw the movie in theaters). I am so glad the Dune movies picked up the mantle to keep insane, expensive, operatic, and self-serious Sci-Fi in theaters. The movie is schlock in the sense that John Millius’ Conan the Barbarian is schlock. Check your standard critic brain at the door and you will have a phenomenal time.

“Death by teacup. Why didn’t I think of that?” Set five years later, we find Riddick pursued by bounty hunters before an encounter with Aereon inspires him to fight the invading Necromongers, under lead of Lord Marshal, who seek to convert or destroy in their efforts to control the universe. Much more my vibes in this action-packed sequel that finds Riddick’s prophetic backstory revealed before he unleashes hell on the Necromongers on the scorching prison moon Crematoria where the volcanic…

Space zombies chase down bald John Wick who has night vision and only says 3 words per line. Apparently zombies isn’t the correct term because they kept using the N-word. Also, I’m pretty sure Karl Urban’s character is wearing the same costume his character wore in Thor Ragnarok.

I am so happy that this is my first movie for Letterboxd! This movie sucks, but I didn’t care, I love it. It’s just so bad, yet so good. The cast is absurd for a film like this. Keith David, Karl Urban, Thandie Newton and Dame Judy Dench all appear in this. Even the music in this fucking rules. Now if you’re wondering what kind of reviews you’re going to get by following me? Yes. Yes you can expect more of this kind of bullshit. Welcome, everyone!!!

The Chronicles of Riddick is one of those rare sequels that doesn’t just expand its world but completely reinvents it. Where Pitch Black thrived as a stripped-down sci-fi horror, this follow-up swings hard into operatic space fantasy, trading claustrophobic tension for sprawling mythology. Whether that works for you depends on how much you’re willing to follow it into the deep end. Vin Diesel’s Richard B. Riddick remains the film’s gravitational center. He’s less of a mysterious antihero this time and…

Cool world, terrible execution and script Should have kept her non binary “Jesus, he just ghosted two guys and I never even saw him” “It’s been a long time since I smelled beautiful” “Where does he come from? Where are his people? These are the things I need to know.” “Shit! I hate not being the bad guys.”

A massive switch up from the first movie. I think that expanding the universe is a good idea, but it’s such a large jump in scale from Pitch Black to this movie. Riddick is still an incredible character and is always enjoyable to watch fight. The uniqueness of the character designs is awesome. A very fresh and weird style that fits VERY well. However this feels like it would be the third movie in a long buildup to a grand…

Karl Urban proving he’s always had issues with men with glowing eyes. This movie is just a battle of who can have the most iconic shitty one liner and the audience is the winner. Dame Judy Dench, Vin Diesel, Keith David, Colm Feore, Karl Urban, AND my first ever movie crush Alexa Davalos? Riddickulously good cast. Riddick is the person every 11 year old boy thinks they want to be. Which is why when I first saw this at 11…

With a gun pointed at my head I couldn’t tell you what was happening at any point in this movie up until the prison scene but I still enjoyed every minute of it. The universe seems so much bigger and more interesting than what we get from it too, which is I guess why there’s so much spin-off material and all. Just a really cool kinda goofy over the top sci-fi/fantasy universe with a fun action movie star protag.

Such a unique sci-fi film, not sure what channel used to play this consistently but I still remember some of the lines. Lots of interesting lore and Riddick is a pretty unique character. Very dark tones with presto so effects, Diesel is fun to watch.

Meh story. Meh action. Not as good as I remembered from being a kid

Not only does Riddick just suck in this movie, but the guy who’s super power is “can see people in the dark and is strong” does a whole lot of not sneaking around in the dark. “Oh the Furryosians were killed by the necramongers” who the fuck cares? Why does riddick have an Overwatch-esque ultimate ability? And why do his swim goggles make him look like a goober? Who made that design choice? Pitch Black sets the “Chronicles of Riddick”…

Definitely a fun time but holy hell this film is constantly at odds with itself. It battles itself with subpar, very dated CGI which butts up against some stunning sets and set design. The dialogue is altogether quite bad and sometimes unintelligible. Even with subtitles on; Vin’s voice is so bassy and soft-spoken it’s just tough to take seriously and tough to understand. The overall vibe and aesthetic is pretty cohesive though but constantly suffers from poor connective writing and…
