The Butler, I think, will always be memorable for its 80-years of summary black experience in America, pre-Civil Rights, age of Civil Rights activism, and post-Civil Rights. Forest Whitaker (“The Last King of Scotland”) is the African-American butler who humbly serves the White House under eight presidents, David Oyelowo is his activist son who is a part of the Freedom Fighters, a follower of Martin Luther King Jr., and a member of the Black Panthers. The director is Lee Daniels of “Precious,” who comes up with stirringly evocative images of re-created images, but also includes inert scenes of too much domestic babble. Oh well, but extraneous elements must be forgiven. The main character, Cecil Gaines, would be naggingly passive if…

Or it should be called ‘The Entire History of Modern America Told In Just Over Two Hours’. It’s hard to understand the thinking behind this film. Loosely based (or inspired by as the opening titles state) on the life of Eugene Allen, a butler who worked at the White House under various presidents until his retirement in 1986. The name has been changed to Cecil Gaines for a story that only seems to exist to enable director Lee Daniel’s retelling of historical events. As the poster clearly lists, there is a considerable roll-call of well known actors involved in the project, either taking on the roles of politicians from the past or Cecil’s friends and family. That celebrity style representation…

One of the most bizarre watching in a long while, not only because the fact none of the actors portraying these real characters look a bit like then (James Marsden looks more like Bobby Kennedy!), but the fact my mother (white, though technically mixed as my grandparents were mixed race) was surprised and had no idea what a mixed race woman look like, even though most of our population in Dominican Republic are black or mixed. That randomness aside, this was a very good biopic. The fact this man lived throughout most of these historical moments in the US allowed for us to see a glimpse into the racial tension and few moments in the history of the country. Forest…

as a history lesson a bit of a cartoon checklist, and i’d be lying if i said i wasn’t hoping for something a little more lurid from Daniels, but i like the idea of the engine here being the father/son relationship with every awkward confrontation, every resentful, stubborn rejection paralleled by an iconic moment in civil rights history, a push-pull bolstered by the lineup of self-contradicting Presidents trying to protect themselves politically while progressing an agenda they know to be worthy but don’t fully comprehend.

The Butler is a Forrest Gump-like fly-over of 20th century American history. Trying to tell two stories at once, we get the tale of a poorer than dirt kid who became a white house butler for thirty years, and also, the entire chronicle of American civil rights. Forrest Gump did not explore American problems; instead it milked humour from the protagonist’s obliviousness. The Butler, conversely, dives into America’s muck. The protagonist Cecil Gaines is starkly aware of, and victimized by, African-American oppression. In the history narrative, Lee Daniels’ vulgarity and pitilessness energizes the biopic with grit and violence that’s important to any tale of slavery and oppression. And, the film’s century-long scope rightly argues that there were many factors that…

When John Cusack as Richard Nixon (GOD BLESS that casting director) says “I don’t want to say anything negative about that Kennedy boy. I’m sure he’s a real nice fellow. But do you really want that spoiled rich son-of-a-bitch fuck to be your next president?” . . . I think about this line reading EVERY day.

This is probably the finest performance I have seen Forest Whittaker give. His performance as White House Butler Cecil Gaines is one of great dignity and courage as his service work witnesses the major social and political shifts across American society and culture over the course of thirty years. A three decade period that sees America grapple with its racism, civil rights, foreign wars and political corruption issues. There is a very nice contrast in courage between Cecil and his…

Ngl, the butler had me holding back tears. Major props to cecil. the guy was built different.. so dope at his job and just a solid, good person all around. It’s crazy because the systemic racism back then was purely disgusting, just zero chill, pure filth. Massive respect 2 him.

Second time watching, but last time my child was just born and now I have a teenager to watch it as well. Yes, it is somewhat predictable as others have said, and I don’t love that it was a two-hour overview shoved into a brief time slot, but it was generally well-done for what it is and I feel the story holds up. The celebrity roles and cameos were definitely for marketing, some were much better than others, but it…

The Butler is a fantastic film that serves as both a history lesson and family drama. Exploring the life of such an important but overlooked role in history and how his (Cecil Gaines) experience during a hard time in America shaped his and his families future especially having a son that wants to join a revolution against all his ideals. Great plot-I love watching a movie about history through an unlikely lense. An amazing Ensemble cast, it felt like every…

My rating: Amazing Unbelievably, this film was shut out for several Oscars. This drama that centers on the fight for civil rights… in the face of slavery, Jim Crow, segregation, white privilege and deep-seated systemic racism. The fight is waged from two different (and seemingly incompatible) directions. Lots of stars but Forest Whitaker in the lead was truly amazing!!

Kinda hard to give an opinion because it tells almost an entire life. I personally don’t like biopics because they always prefer cramming information over mood. I felt like the whole style of the movie was disconnected from the tone and themes. Like there’s no reason for music during racist beatings. In addition, following it in chronological order with a voice over was never very helpful. Overall it’s not that bad but feels less like a film and more of something an American history teacher would put on when they don’t wanna teach.

A great Civil Rights film cause you basically get to spark-note your way through American History. Forrest Gump style with Forrest Whittaker. Lee Daniel’s manages to get an all star cast to team up & deliver an entire man’s life in just about 2 hours. It’s actually pretty impressive seeing different actors pop up as presidents. It’s like a who’s who lineup. Dare I say each one of them is pitch perfect! I heard they had a Barrack Obama actor cast but cut his scenes in post.

- Synopsis
- Cecil Gaines was a sharecropper's son who grew up in the 1920s as a domestic servant for the white family who casually destroyed his. Eventually striking out on his own, Cecil becomes a hotel valet of such efficiency and discreteness in the 1950s that he becomes a butler in the White House itself. There, Cecil would serve numerous US Presidents over the decades as a passive witness of history with the American Civil Rights Movement gaining momentum even as his family has troubles of its own. As his wife, Gloria, struggles with alcoholism and his defiant eldest son, Louis, strives for a just world, Cecil must decide whether he should take action in his own way.
