Always liked the premise here of illusionists/con artists being forced to confront real fairy tale movie magic, and there’s some decent production design and FX work (some occasionally janky CG notwithstanding) but it never really tops the self-reflexive opening performance they put on and quickly stops being about that angle and pivots to being a more traditional, sluggishly paced supernatural adventure mystery. Even baby Josh was falling asleep during this one when it came out, Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow the better version of what this thinks it’s doing.

***Dinner with Gilliam – 9th Course*** Once upon a time there was a director of films named Terry Gilliam. Terry was a strange man who made strange, yet delightful films about imagination. One day, Terry decided to make a film based on some other great purveyors of fantasy, the Brothers Grimm. In his film, the Brothers were a pair of con-artists who must confront actual magic to save their lives and find their ways, and thus they lived happily ever after. Except they didn’t, because Terry’s The Brothers Grimm was aggressively bland at best and downright dreadful at worst. You see, the Brothers were played by Matt Damon, who seemed confused as to why his hair looked so silly, and…

The spider-horse scene has haunted my nightmares since I was 10 and I’m genuinely afraid to revisit this film because of it. Seriously, I didn’t trust horses for years.

This movie feels like a fever dream someone had after reading too many fairy tales. It’s dark, weird, creepy, and honestly kind of fun, but I can’t say I completely loved it. The whole atmosphere is probably my favorite part—the twisted forests, cursed villages, creepy creatures, and that unsettling fairy-tale feeling made it feel like a childhood storybook got dropped into a horror movie. Matt Damon and Heath Ledger were fun to watch together, even if their characters sometimes felt a little messy. The story was interesting enough to keep me watching, but it felt like there were too many ideas fighting for attention

After a promising first act, this one just goes off the rails. I’m sure there’s plenty of blame to go around, but Gilliam and the Weinsteins notoriously feuded through this production. The story gets lost and it just becomes creatively for creativity’s sake; which might entertain in flashes, but does not sustain engagement. Maybe there was a good story at one point, maybe not. Damon and Ledger make a great pair, and Lena Headey is pretty badass, but ultimately this film becomes pretty unwatchable pretty quick. Pity.

Despite all its shortcomings, I still have to see a better reimagining of fairy tales in film. Rupert Sanders’ Snow White has nothing on this; modern Hansel and Gretel flicks don’t boil my cauldron. Now Gilliam’s film, while bizarre and sometimes overfarcical (Stormare plays the Italian character like he expects the Pythons to enlist him for a new sketch show), does give me what I want. Sure the story is a mess: too many elements combined in a Rube Goldberg…

This movie is the primary example to never mix a potion that includes 19th Century German tales, a Monty Python member and 2000s CGI. Also, what kind of fucked up line is: “You killed my friends.” “I wish you had more.”

I’ll tell you what, 2000s Matt Damon can make up for a lot. Iffy CGI and all. We as a society need to make better fiction about the Brothers Grimm. This isn’t a bad movie, least not in my opinion. Just could’ve been better. I really did enjoy all the little fairy tale references that aren’t plot relevant. The evil queen sleeping on a pile of mattresses at the top of a tower and having really long hair, a little girl wearing a red cloak, a pair of siblings named Hansel and Greta. A little old woman giving someone an apple. It’s clever

I’m an absolute sucker for Monica Bellucci and “dark” fantasy and this was a lot of fun despite how all over the place it was with the script and performances. Crazy to think that I saw this onscreen over 21 years ago and even watched one of those E! Behind the Scenes interviews on tv for it.

so strange, i remember seeing this and finding it fascinating, it’s clear the 20 years that have gone by haven’t done it any favors, this checks as a proto-Once Upon A Time (including both the goofy acting and bad cgi), but past the shallow ouat comparison this is…. so clearly a Pirates of the Caribbean rip off?!?!?! we’ve got the love triangle with a keira knightly look-a-like, the clash and xenophobia of two european cultures. fuck it, let’s also bring…

A me questo film piace.

Sheshh it had me laughing, then immediately questioning the CGI budget. Some scenes were genuinely fun, others looked like they were rendered on a school computer. And that gingerbread scene, WHAT was going on 💀. Messy as hell, but I can’t lie, I had a good time watching.

The Heath Ledger kick continues with a film that both me and my sister haven’t seen since theaters back in 2005. The Brothers Grimm was a movie that I remembered having mixed feelings about when I first saw it and I still felt that same way upon a rewatch. Sure, it’s entertaining enough and both Ledger & Damon are fine in their roles. But it’s a bit confused on whether it wants to be a full-blown tongue in cheek take on the Brothers Grimm or a scary folktale.

This isn’t as bad as I remembered; in fact it’s reasonably entertaining and imaginative. But it feels like Gilliam finally hit a wall (namely, Harvey Weinstein) and buckled for the first time in his career. It’s as if they filmed two versions of this film – a straightforward (and boring) post-Pirates adventure film, and a more florid, intense Gilliam-esque version – and intercut them scene-by-scene. Lena Hedley’s love interest belongs in the first film, along within the glaring CGI and…

Not an incredible movie but super wierd and freaky. Terry Gilliam has such an uncanny vision for things, I don’t love all of it but it’s hard to deny its uniqueness. Also, I think Matt Damon and Heath Ledger are having a ball in this. At one point they inexplicably wake up wearing bonnets; love that.

Okay challengers but make it about the brothers grimm in early 19th century europe….. Why is Matt Damon morena as fuck??? This was one of the movies I was obsessed with growing up, and Holy it was still so good and weird as when I first watched it. The british accents were giving, but maybe that’s because i’m American and think anyone doing a British accent is revolutionary and fun!! Pretty sure this was my introduction to Terry Gilliam, on the way to start his filmography! Heath Ledger’s ragged beard…. Sure

I had been putting this one off because I miss Heath Ledger The ghost of David Lynch watched it with me. He thought the film would be better with Monica Bellucci in the roles of the brothers. I agreed but thought it should have been Lena Hedley. We agreed it was weird to see so much cgi in a Gilliam film. He then lit a ghost cigarette and disappeared and I contemplated listening to the commentary

I liked it! Heath ledger and Matt Damon’s chemistry is really solid and the wackiness of it all is appreciated by me! I do think there’s a version of this that could be better somewhere, as I hear this movie had its problems in production, but ya know, such is life. Lena heady is good here too. Just goes to show that back then, even bad movies had heart and were made with intention. I did not know who the…

It seems impossible but apparently famously chill guys Terry Gilliam and Harvey Weinstein had a bit of a contentious relationship during the production of this! Sad that this isn’t better, given that the premise is strong, the director is well suited to the material and the leads are a nice pairing. Especially unfortunate given his few Ledger performances we got before his untimely passing that this is such a swing and a miss.

The Brothers Grimm looks like a fairy tale, but beneath the enchanted forests, crooked towers and grotesque creatures, it feels more like a funeral for innocence. Terry Gilliam’s 2005 film drags the familiar mythology of the Brothers Grimm through the mud and leaves it there to rot. This isn’t the soft, sanitised world of childhood bedtime stories. Here, folklore feels like something that crawled out of the collective unconscious something humanity invented because reality itself was too frightening to explain.…
