While watching this documentary, play the following drinking game: Take a shot whenever the film: – Features an interview with Mike Love peddling his signature brand of self-serving revisionist history, where he actually had an equal songwriting partnership with Brian this whole time – Cuts to a B-list celebrity, who has nothing to do with The Beach Boys, talking about how much the band means to them – Mentions The Beatles and how the two bands pushed each other’s creative limits. Throw in an extra shot for mentions of the Rubber Soul —> Pet Sounds —> Sgt. Pepper’s timeline – References The Beach Boys being a family band – Talks about how although they all sang about surfing, no one…

The discordant story of a harmonic band. Their beloved songs evoke pure joy and fun, and yet this look behind the scenes is mostly turmoil and strife. Murry Wilson tried to control his sons. He sold their publishing rights without their permission, costing the family tens or hundreds of millions of dollars. Mike Love couldn’t stand Brian Wilson getting all the attention, and later sued him for songwriting credit. Brian couldn’t stand himself getting all the attention, and lost his mind. Band members quit or retired; they hired various buddies and session musicians to bolster their ranks. Frankly, it’s amazing their sound remained so consistent and distinct when so many different dudes came and went! This is a respectable telling…

Since this is Disney I‘d imagine this has the greatest budget of any Beach Boys documentary ever made and yet it somehow manages to exclude: — Dennis DYING in 1983 by drowning drunk while diving for shit he threw in the ocean 3 yrs prior — Any real discussion of Brian’s mental illness beyond “he was in bed a lot.” Like we don’t even get a diagnosis — Brian being under conservatorship with a shitty psychologist who controlled and drugged him for years — Dennis marrying Mike Love’s (alleged) estranged daughter (i.e. Dennis probably fucked his first cousin once removed) — Really anything meaningful about God Only Knows (crime punishable by death btw) — The degree to which Dennis was involved…

i’ve kind of snapped in the last two weeks and read about seven different books about The Beach Boys (thank you archive.org) so obviously i don’t particularly need to watch this because what is there left for me to know about The Beach Boys beyond Dennis Wilson’s ghost coming to me in a dream and telling me to hunt down Mike Love and kill him and to stream Pacific Ocean Blue on Spotify (that’s a really good album by the way) but it’s really funny and almost kind of jarring how extensively this covers basically everything up to the dissolution of SMiLE and than loses steam by briefly talking about Smiley Smile and the other two “bedroom” albums (which basically…

I liked the way this doco went through the story of the Beach Boys, but it seemingly also left a lot behind the curtains. Very much a narrative of their lives from an outsiders perspective rather than a deep dive into their true psyches. Hard to rate because it’s enjoyable nonetheless, just lacks some integrity perhaps.

I’m very glad that Forever written by Dennis Wilson had a moment in the film, that was nice. Unfortunately, throughout the rest of the film, nothing was really dedicated to talking about their music in any meaningful way. “Pet Sounds was good” that’s it. Kind of mentioned it, but not really, so I’ll state it in my review. The Beach Boys’ story does not have a happy ending. Dennis Wilson died in 1983 (during the “revival” ending of the documentary!)…

the beach boys deserve better :/ this doc was ok for the most part. i liked the inclusion of their relationship/rivalry with the beatles. but i felt that overall it was just a very nothing doc. the beach boys had the most insane lore and it could’ve been so good 😭 mike love is incredibly annoying in this omfg. i really wished it delved deeper into their mid to late 70s period of their career! the backstory of the beach…

The Beach Boys (2024) I don’t know as much about The Beach Boys as perhaps I should, beyond enjoying the same songs that everybody knows, so I’ve gone into a few albums recently and decided this doc would be a good place to start. …I was kinda right, it was a fun, fast moving and enjoyable documentary for a while then it ends by doing that thing that all band documentaries seem to do which is hit the less popular…

I really liked this documentary considering I loved some of their most famous songs but couldn’t even name all the band members, but having read other reviews if I was a more knowledgable fan I think my opinion on it would be very different since Disney does not really address a lot of important issues and big key parts of the beach boys history as a band, especially over time considering they didn’t break up officially ever.. like “it’s all…

A pretty meh music documentary about one of America’s most important groups. It really doesn’t dig into many of the interesting stories I know of that are actually pretty dark for a band that, on the surface, is so upbeat, and their image and music paint such a rosy picture of Southern California in the 50s and 70s. But it was nice to hear from lesser-known members of the band and how each dealt with the dynamic of a band…

How is this a definitive look at The Beach Boys when they don’t even talk about Dennis’ death or Brian being institutionalized? It leaves a lot out that you wouldn’t know if it this was your only exposure to the group. Enjoyed learning about the early days of the band. Once again, never mix family with management. I can’t imagine how much money was lost by selling their publishing. I have never liked Mike Love and to be honest, this did…

This isn’t as good as documentary as you would think it doesn’t do the beach boys enough justice for how really influential and important like why tf is the guy who made counting stars telling me how Brian Wilson influenced him what has that guy done genuinely anyway they also fail to mention how chaotic the group and their individual life’s were it seems like they brush off major events as you remember that one time ? That was pretty…

  75. A
    Aaron Spears 6 月 14, 2026

A perfect fine, often insightful, and also very quick introduction to an iconic band. I hate to suggest it, but this should have been a series. I know, we don’t need everything turned into a series. But this needed to be as long and as comprehensive as OJ: Made in America and Long Strange Trip.

  76. R
    Ramon Ford 1 月 10, 2026

The documentary was alright, but it was heavily carried by the music. There’s so much interesting aspects about the bands entire career yet they skip through so much (Love You, M.I.U, 2012 Reunion Tour, etc). They even use so little of Al compared to Mike which is pretty crazy.
