Hoop-Tober, Film 28 of 31: Once an addict, always an addict. Or so the saying goes. The Babadook is not a horror film… not to me, at least. It’s a dark, brooding psychological drama that utilizes tropes of the horror genre to convey an underlying message. It’s a film about two things: grief and drug addiction. This is quite clear to me. “You can’t get rid of The Babadook.” Certainly, you can’t; you can’t get rid of your addictions, and you can’t get rid of the feeling of missing your deceased loved ones… you can only tame yourself to live without harmful, escapist tendencies. The ending of this film is in perfect concordance with this notion. Amelia is a woman…

Had the incredible pleasure of re-watching this with Jennifer Kent today at Fantastic Fest for a special live episode of my DIRECTOR’S COMMENTARY podcast. The theater was sold out. We talked for a few minutes about her journey to becoming a filmmaker, and then sat together with the audience to discuss the film in real time as it played. Hearing her thoughts, recollections, and insights about the film was absolutely amazing. She hadn’t seen it in almost ten years, and I think everyone in the theater got emotional in the film’s final moments. What a surreal and wonderful way to experience this seminal piece of work.

i made my college friend watch this film since she’s never seen this movie and she dresses similar to the babadook (i also made her watch juno) and she enjoyed it haha but lowkey the more i watch this film the more i realise that the kid isn’t as annoying as i thought it would be, but he’s still annoying even though he’s cute

The Babadook has not aged the way I hoped it would. As far as “tHe ReAl HoRroR iS gRiEf” films (my absolutely least favourite genre) go, this is one of the better ones, but I really did not feel the oomph I did when this released. It feels harsh to knock a film so much from the visuals, but for a film that was released in 2014 this looks absolutely dreadful and it sucks so much energy out of the…

It was a pretty average movie. For a 2014 film, though, I think it was well done, with a different and deeper concept than we could have even imagined back then. Depression, sadness, and unresolved grief can leave us frustrated, unhappy, and unable to enjoy or appreciate what we have right in front of us. The Babadook represents exactly that and shows that perhaps the best thing we can do is make peace with our demons so we can move…

Poor baby, really good film I really enjoyed it actually. The kid was definitely a handful but he was the least annoying character in the film, he’s just a little baby who loves his mummy

I understood “you can’t get rid of the Babadook”, but didn’t expect that to mean befriending him and keeping in the basement 💀. I was kind of hoping the movie would be more unsettling. Babadook, despite great introduction, wasn’t as scary as I thought he will be. We could sense his presence through some details but he barely appeared in a full form, which is disappointing, because I think the story would benefit from including more fear factors. However, I loved how this movie understood and portrayed woman’s feelings.

    Melodic_Vampy 8 月 21, 2026

While not good, it wasn’t necessarily bad. The film was shot oddly, the audio was botchy a few times, and while the horror element was good, it was executed poorly. Would’ve done better if someone like James Wan directed it, and a character or two died. Pretty stupid ending as well. TW: SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT And, the dog dies. What the fuck, man? 💔

I have to give it two stars bc of how disturbing it is. I get that it’s a good horror concept though. Something about it is too real. Also I have beef with movies that kill dogs it literally adds nothing
